(06-11-2018 09:24 AM)gsloth Wrote:  A lot of this conversation probably belongs in the other thread about hiring the coach, but as someone nowhere close to this search, I must say that how this has gone really hasn't surprised me one bit. Watching the progression of the baseball program, and Rice athletics, from afar, I'm not surprised that it's something that any coach would automatically jump for. It's not where it was, and money to spend on the program is an open question.

Is this as fast as most fans wanted? No. But that's how it goes sometimes. At least this isn't the Tennessee football hire process. As someone pointed out earlier, it took Texas a month to hire their next baseball coach. And given the resource constraints going on, this doesn't surprise me one bit. (Nor why former major leaguers tied to Rice are being brought in - whether it's a formal interview for the position or not, I'm sure there is a fundraising component to any discussion (including what those players would want to see if they were in charge)).

So I'm not going to get worked up about someone's artificial deadline, even if it came from JK's mouth, and understand that this hire is not going to be easily done. He just better get it right, and hopefully with more funds and ideas to do the things necessary to keep Rice baseball great.

You are correct that it is one thing to be slow, deliberate, and careful.

The Norm Charlton thing pushed this from that into near clown-car status.

In the absence of that fiasco I would be much in the same boat you are --- let it take us where it takes us, at the speed it takes us. But the singular fact remains that not only is the search dredging up Gulf Coast fishermen, it doesnt have the guidance to, when that idea is germinated, to bother to vet the person on a surfical level not just for relevant experience, but as to whether Capn Norm even wants to leave the fishing life.

I think that what I have heard elsewhere on this board holds -- JK thought he did a good job with the Saarloos 'pre-recruit' and thought he had that bag filled much like he probably pre-filled the Bloomgren slot several months in advance.

Saarloos left him at the altar. So now it is not just back to square one, but square one with hints of that 'being left holding the bag desperation'. Explains the Charlton episode very nicely. But that situation does not hold out a lot of promise, as the Rice program is very unique not just for the student/athlete challenges but also for the fact of its legacy at this point.

But it makes me anxious and I do not believe at this point it is the slow deliberative process that you think it might be.

It's not a fiasco until JK actually hires a fishing guide.

JK thought he had somebody lined up, the plan didn't work out, now he has to scramble.

If that sort of thing has never happened to one of you then you've never worked for a living.

How he handles it and who he ends up hiring is what matters.

Charlton's your tipping point? If you're the AD, your #1 choice is off the board, and Norm Charlton calls you to say he'd like to throw his name into the hat, what's the harm in taking the interview? Optics? Even if you have no intention if hiring him, he's a MLB vet, has coaching experience, and might have some valuable things to think about as you discuss the job with other candidates. Not to mention (as gsloth alludes to), he's either already a significant donor or has the potential to be one. Why blow him off?

I thought news that JK had talked with / interviewed Charlton broke multiple days before Saarloos removed his name from consideration? If so, then I don't think the timeline of what has been leaked matches the suggestion that JK panicked after Saarloos said he wasn't interested.

That's correct. Charlton said he interviewed on May 31 which would have put his interview during the same week as when Saarloos interviewed. Saarloos didn't remove his name from consideration until June 4.

Norm Charlton is one of the top 10 (maybe top 5) players in the history of the program. If he asks for an interview, you give it to him out of respect. Plus a good opportunity to get his input.

Exactly.

We have a tendency to ridicule those that we need to support...Mensa...fishing trip...fishing guide...

You don't have to think he is the right hire at this time to at least show some respect for a baseball legend.

RE: Dane Acker....transfer?
I fish a lot in the Rockport area, but have never fished with Norm. If nothing else, this episode has reminded me to give him a call for a future trip.

BTW - The Rockport/Fulton & Holiday beach area is still hurting big time from Harvey. The resilience of the folks that call that area home is amazing! My best wishes to all of them! If you've never fished the area, give Norm or one of the other many area guides a call and book a trip. It's way cheaper than owning a boat and you're chances of a succesful trip will improve greatly!

RE: Dane Acker....transfer?
Since this is a Dane Acker thread, I will report that I had a very nice visit with Dane this evening after he finished his pregame bull pen session. We did talk about his transfer and the search for the new coach. Dane will be starting tomorrow night (Wednesday) for the Santa Barbara Foresters against the Arroyo Seco Saints in historic Jackie Robinson stadium in Pasadena. The SB Foresters game radio broadcasts are carried on the internet with a very good announcer. By the way, Dane is wearing number 37 this summer.

There are no other Rice players playing in the California Collegiate League this summer. Garret Gayle was supposed to play with Santa Barbara but reneged on his commitment.

Hey guys. I'm a follower of the Rice threads and really enjoy the discussions.

I wanted to let you know that Garrett Gayle was offered a full contract to play in the Cape Cod League this summer at the beginning of the spring. After discussing this offer with the coaching staff they all recommended that he go to the Cape vs. back to California. I've visited with the family at times during games this season and was told that this was a very difficult decision for Garrett as he loved playing for the Foresters and Coach Pintard. He actually took several weeks to make this decision after the Cape called The current coaching staff were instrumental in helping him to make the decision to go east. I just felt some context might be in order as the term "reneged" seemed harsh.

This is my first post but I do enjoy reading all the Rice Athletics discussion. Your passion for Rice is appreciated and evident in the discussions.

Welcome to the board and thank you for the actual facts! It’s nice to hear a true account without all the other BS. Good luck to Garrett in the Cape!

We did talk about the rules about having to sit out a year if one transfers to another D-1 but not a junior college. Also, it is possible to be drafted from a junior college without waiting the three years at a four year school. We also talked about some of the proposed rules that maybe it we would permitted to play for another D-1 if there is a change in the coach without sitting out a year. Of course, it would not be permitted to transfer to the same school and play immediately if old coach accepted a job at a new school. Theoretically, he could take the whole team as well as the coaching staff.

Ed, did you bother to ask why he's transferring? That's the big question. He was going to be a major part of next year's pitching staff.
