i can't believe in 12 hours, the Caps might have won the Stanley Cup. Just would be an incredible story here in DC. They had set up a thing yesterday where for the watching party at Cap One arena you could claim your tickets. Well more than 70k fans logged on trying to get that. For a 18,500 seat arena- to just watch the game on TV. The Caps even stepped up to pay Metro to extend service hours- a first for a road game.

Washington, Nashville, Vegas, Tampa have been such great hockey markets. Incredible to see.

what an incredible series. If Caps win in 5, one of the most entertaining 5 game series that I've ever seen.

I did not think the Caps could do this in 5. But Ovechkin, IMO, has earned this one with all of his past playoff failures in Washington.

1 thing that's amazing looking at the current cup droughts now that Washington has won....

NY Islanders have the 7th longest one
Edmonton is 9th longest now
Montreal is 12th longest.

RE: 2017-18 NHL Thread STANLEY CUP FINALS: Vegas vs. Washington
Would have liked the storybook ending for Vegas, but Washington was a good team top to bottom and Vegas mostly gave them all they could handle. With the exception of Game 4 downer, it was a VERY entertaining Stanley Cup series. Haven't remembered enjoying watching this much since the Rangers broke their cup drought/curse in the 90's with Messier et. al.

I thought Holtbe the Wash goalie deserved the Conn Smythe trophy as MVP, however over Ovechkin. I hadn't seen him play much in the past, and I understand he started this season off very strong, but a lot of what I saw from him was parking in front of the goal while others did more work and waiting to deflect a puck in. I think Wash had a strong, balanced tough team, and Vegas had not faced enough real adversity later in the season to be able to come together until game 5.

I think the Raiders will do extraordinarily well in that market and it will be one of the toughest regular season tix in sports. NBA would also do well, IMO. Only baseball would have a problem in that market, even with an indoor stadium, duwe to pace/style of play and 81 home games each year. Better to leave them AAA with the 51's as their top team, at least for a few more decades.

Thanks Vegas, for making Hockey fun to follow again, and good luck in the future, you have everything to be proud of.

To: GTS, we really could use a Hockey Puck icon like the others above.

I think there's a credible argument that just making it to the Stanley Cup Finals constitutes a storybook ending. I get that this expansion draft was more advantageous than previous expansion drafts, but NOBODY expected anything NEAR this kind of performance. I have to admit I was pretty dismissive of the team and the city before the season began but I found myself rooting for them, even before the playoffs.

I wasn't sure about this last year when they announced, but after watching how the city embraced the GKs, I'm sure you're right. Vegas is a much better sports town than I imagined.

Still hate the Raiders and their fans though. That's not gonna change.

Just thinking somewhere in Heaven- Glenn Brenner, George Michael, Jim Vance are all happy as can be right now. Caps might not be here right now w/o Michael and Vance believe it or not.

And I love how the Caps brought back their original announcer for one of the games in the cup run- Ron Weber. He was there on Monday for game 4. Awesome touch- hopefully he'll be involved in the parade....

I agree, Brookes, I'm not much of a Raiders fan, but you have to admit they nailed the perfect team image for that town to embrace. Despite his expensive haircut (cough, cough) Mark Davis made the right decision, and I'm sure Al is looking down (up?) and is proud--probably wishing he could come back and see a few games in Vegas' new stadium when it's finished.

I'm not sure if Houston can support an NHL franchise. It's a great city of fans, but there are so many existing sports options that I think it'd be difficult to justify. Southern teams have done best when they don't have NBA to compete against, like Tampa and Nashville. I guess moving the Coyotes there would be a more stable situation for them and make it easy for them to go to the Central.

Quebec City is the best long-term destination for Florida, and you don't even have to realign the divisions too.

Houston can because of sheer numbers, even if most of us couldn't give a rip about hockey. 5 percent of the Houston market is still 35k. Add in 200k casual fans and it's viable long term.
