College Baseball Sweet 16 (Super-Regionals) ...
It took until Tuesday morning for all the regionals to be decided, but we finally have our Baseball Super-Regional matchups. These teams will play best 2 out of 3 series this weekend with the winners advancing to the College World Series in Ohama.

The SEC leads the way with 6 teams in the Super Regionals, and because they all play each other, 3 SEC teams will be in the College World Series. The PAC, ACC, and Big 12 all have two entrants. The B1G, Atlantic Sun, Ohio Valley, and Big West also put teams in the SRs. Note that if you are looking for Cinderella stories, schools like Cal-State Fullerton and Stetson do not count, as they are baseball powers despite their zero profile in hoops and football. The SRs:

Florida vs Auburn

Texas Tech vs Duke

Arkansas vs South Carolina

Texas vs Tennessee Tech

Washington vs Cal-State Fullerton

Vanderbilt vs Mississippi State

Stetson vs North Carolina

Minnesota vs Oregon State

Regarding regional seeds, of the 16 top seeds in the regions, 8 of them advanced to the SRs. Six #2 seeds won their regions, while two #3 seeds (CSF and Washington) advanced. No #4 seeds won a regional.

If I had to pick a Cinderella team out of that group it would be Minnesota. For a far Northern team with the weather disadvantages they face to make it to the Supers is commendable.

South Carolina fans are very happy to be back and happy to finally have a coach with a pulse. The last five years (even though we went to two Supers) have been hard to watch.

Yes, the baseball season starts in mid-February, which makes it tough on the northern teams, so Minnesota has done a very good job. They were a regional #1 seed and took care of business. They do have a tough SR though versus an Oregon State team that dominated perennial power LSU in their regional this past weekend.

Minnesota though has an advantage over other Northern teams in that they play home games inside a domed stadium, U S Bank field, during February and March. That Vikings stadium can be aligned for baseball. They had games cancelled in April at their outside home, Siebert Field, due to snow and cold.

C'mon, guys, get serious. Big Ten schools with $100 million athletic budgets are never Cinderellas; they're the raptors from Jurassic Park.

The Cinderella in the super regionals is Tennessee Tech.

First school from their conference (the Ohio Valley) to ever reach the baseball super regionals.

Only NCAA titles ever won by Tennessee Tech athletes are in Rifle (team national champs in 1980, 1981, and 1982), a sport the school no longer sponsors.

eight different conferences represented in the Super Regionals. That works.

Any school with the name "Stetson" is automatically a Cinderella by rule.

Yes, but they were a #2 seed, which means they were highly regarded going in to the tournament.

But no question, beating Ole Miss twice to win that regional is a fantastic outcome for them.

I get that. Does it suck that we bowed out of the Deland regional without putting up much of a fight? Yes it does. But our baseball is getting better, I'm optimistic about it.

For now, let's congratulate the Hatters on their first super-regional. They aren't any kind of threat to USF in the big picture of things in Florida.

I'm sure they will paint Tennessee Tech as a Cinderella, but they are far from it. This team was packed last year and they have since added pitching depth to a lineup that has hit almost 40 more home runs than any other Division I school this year. Texas will have its hands full. BTW I agree that Stetson and CSF are not Cinderellas either. Chipper Jones was a Hatter and his Stetson school fields a solid team annually and CSF has been a perennial baseball power for quite some time.

It was interesting how many of the regionals were won by an unbeaten team. That extra game was only required in 3 or 4 of the 16 regionals, despite the fact that there were a lot of 2 and 3 seeds winning.

Yes, I'm disappointed the Bulls failed to advance, but if we couldn't, I'm glad it is Stetson. I've always liked that school.

That stood out for me, and also the number of teams that came from behind. E.g., Duke and Tennessee Tech both beat the #1 seed twice on the last day to win their regionals, that doesn't happen very often.
