2018-19 Men's Basketball Roster
With 3 transfers announced, I thought it would be worthwhile to project next year's roster. I will delete names if more guys transfer. I am only including scholarship players, not as disrespect to the walk-ons, but because it has a larger influence on available roster spots and the size of future recruiting classes.
Senior (1): Williams (Tr)
Junior (3): Adams, Harrison, Martin Jr.
Sophomore (1): Parrish (RS)
Freshman (5): Moore, Mullins, Murphy III, Millora-Brown, Peterson
Open scholarships (3) (unless Dylan Jones returns as a 6th-year player)

Thanks. Someone else had also told me that as well, but I'll wait for something more official before adjusting the list above. Anyone else we have to worry about, or you think he will be the last guy to transfer off the current roster?

At this point I wouldn't count on anybody except the incoming freshmen 100% being a part of the team next year. Seems like everybody looks around after each year.

I am very confident that Conner will be back, my source is excellent, but not going to say who....

Removed Meyer from the roster since his transfer is now confirmed. Is Hunter definitely staying at Rice? Haven't heard anything official.

You need to change the first post to say 3 juniors instead of 4.

Might not have an answer on Hunter until after the academic year is complete.

RE: 2018-19 Men's Basketball Roster
Time to re-up this, I guess.
Seniors (3): Cashaw, Williams, Jones (I think)
Juniors (3): Adams, Martin, Harrison
Sophs (1): Parrish
Fresh (5): Moore, Mullins, Murphy, QMB, Peterson

With the increasing numbers of frosh leaving after 1, at some point the BB program might be carrying 13 freshmen on continual basis.....

And when that happens, if a player decides to stay for a second year, we will be asking what is wrong with our recruiting, that we had a player with no better option than to stay.
I'm sorry, but after one year, it is looking like Pera may very well be a washout --- how the hell do you lose 80 friggin per cent of your first year recruits after less than a year?
I'm sorry, but dont tell me it is 'endemic' to the college game. Losing one, maybe two at tops I can see. This year's fatality rate on the freshmen is the same wipeout numbers that the departure of Rhoades inflicted on the starters.
I am looking at random programs, and I dont see another one that lost an entire first year tranche the way Rice did this year ---- this is both astounding, and highly troubling. I mean this is Ebola-level fatality rates......

RE: 2018-19 Men's Basketball Roster
I don't think that, under the circumstances, the 2017-18 frosh class was ever regarded as much more than warm bodies so that we had enough numbers to field a team. The 2018-19 freshman class has been recruited under what was clearly a more organized effort. Let's see what happens to them.
It does seem to me that in this day of one-and-done, a reasonable strategy might be to focus on recruits whose academic and personal makeups suggest they will stay for four, and count on coaching them up. That's not an easy strategy to implement, and it would take time to realize positive results. But it might be the way we have to go.

Didn’t Bear Bryant run off most of his players his first year -the “Junction Boys”?

Key word is “was”. Osborne and Hunter were two of the top five leading scorers on the team (if you exclude AJ), so whatever reputation they had coming in as freshman was erased by the fact that they were both big contributors this year and likely next year.

RE: 2018-19 Men's Basketball Roster
The more I think about this, the more I think people are blowing this a bit out of proportion. Hunter came on strong at the end of the year for sure, but he was mostly a strong, drive to the basket guy (and heavily favored the right side). Defenses would have eventually figured that out and keyed up for his move to the basket. Robert Martin saw a bit of that during the year.
I'm assuming Hunter struggled academically and just wasn't a good fit at Rice for that reason. He probably needs to find a school where it won't be as hard for him. He averaged 6.4 points a game. I'd be shocked if Josh Parrish won't be double that a game next year. Plus we have 3 incoming freshmen who are 6-3, 6-4 and 6-4 - two of whom are 3-star recruits and the other probably should be a 3-star guy.
Ultimately, our top 2 returning starters in terms of scoring are returning (Cashaw and Adams) and will be a senior and junior. Those two plus Parrish and just 1 or 2 of those freshmen are plenty of backcourt power (assuming everyone is healthy). I'm a bit more worried about our front court but we have the graduate transfer from Pacific, Robert Martin and Tim Harrison, and then the two incoming freshmen there in Peterson and Millora-Brown so we certainly have numbers there as well.
We just can't afford too many significant injuries. I would also hope that if Addison Owen returns, he's finally put on scholarship. But I thought someone said he wouldn't be back?
Pera gets the 1 year mulligan from me. If this happens again, then that's a major, major issue and I will finally be willing to join the overly-critical folks here who won't hold back on their thoughts on men's hoops.
