RE: Should the A-Sun look to expand?
The A-Sun sits at 9 teams now, which is a perfect number for a nice even 16 game round robin conference basketball schedule. That’s all fine and good. However, I’ve always been a fan of larger conferences, with more variety. That being said, I’d love to see greater expansion if it offered greater competition, or bigger markets, or greater conference comtinuity.

As I posted on another thread.....

NJIT - Slippery Rock - Liberty - Bellarmine - Lipscomb - High Point - UNC Ashville - Winthrop - Charleston So. - North Alabama - Kennesaw St. - Jacksonville - North Florida - Stetson - FGCU

I would like to see one or two of the following

William and Mary
Jacksonville State
Austin Peay
Morehead State
New Orleans

Or D2 possibility
West Florida
West Georgia
North Greenville
UNC Pembroke
Valdasta State

I can’t imagine an OVC or CAA team moving “down” to the A-Sun. Would New Orleans be too west for the A-Sun? UNC Pembroke has routinely interested me, based on their Native American history.

New Orleans is not that much further West than UNA. Just further South. As far as the OVC, if you count football, market sizes and Basketball together, I the the A-Sun is a better deal. The Big South had 2 teams in the playoffs last year vs 1 for the OVC. Overall Markets are much bigger in the A-Sun, and with Liberty joining the A-Sun and with the potential all the Florida schools plus Lipscomb, KSU and UNA have both had National Championship basketball programs at the D2 level, the potential is there for a multiple bids conference in basketball. With 10 schools, that's more money for the bottom line. Even more than certain FBS conferences per school. But like I said, it all potential. The schools in the A-Sun going forward will have to push and encourage each other in facilities and recruiting.

As far as being too far West, there have been schools from Texas in the A-Sun.

Slippery Rock is very unlikely. If any PASSHE schools join D1, it'd be IUP or West Chester, but PASSHE has too many issues as a group for any of their member schools to leave the PSAC for D1 anytime soon.

What about University of Charleston in WV? They have a brand new basketball arena and are in a decent market.

Seriously, I think N.C. A&T may be the best fit. They have around 12K students, are investing in the athletic program, are in a good geo area, and open up another state to the ASun.

For our size and prestige conference, my dream pick for a team from SC would be College of Charleston. Great location, great enrollment, good tradition. Yes, I know, no one would ever leave the CAA for the ASun.

Yet, but the A-Sun is in a great position and is on a good upward trend.

I know you are new to D1 but no one is leaving CAA for A-SUN in the next 50 years

May not, and I have kept up with D1 for years. I know at the moment the CAA is the "better" conference. But I wouldn't have thought Liberty would join the A-Sun either. You never know what is truly best for a school. We all have our ideas, but only the adadministration of the school know what really needs (or may not need) to be done.

But I agree, the CAA is a great conference, I was just pointing out that the A-Sun is trending up.

The A-SUN is trending up but Liberty was in a tight spot. That really is the only reason for the move. We wanted full membership and the Big South wasn’t having it so we bolted. Not many schools have our situation.

N.C A&T looks pretty good as far as enrollment and endowment. Also adds a new state to expand the conference footprint.
Bellarmine should always be on the short list 04-cheers

I'll also add that West Florida looked good but I don't think it is a good idea to keep adding Florida schools. Four is already enough. Expansion should consider new recruiting grounds, more exposure in new states, and large enrollment to amplify the conference. N.C. A&T fits the bill.

The thing about west florida is that it’s closer to Alabama and New Orleans than it is to the rest of the ASun Florida schools.
