I think it moved to the new, old location in 1996 or 1997. Before that, it was possible to watch baseball from the porch at Klondike.

Here's a picture of Lackey Field from 1979. The Convocation Center is located roughly the same place as the tennis courts at the bottom right edge of the picture.

There's going to be some development done in the area near the ballpark in the next few years. Not entirely sure what yet.

There needs to be some demolition in right field, AMIRITE?

I referred to the previous ballpark, which replaced Red Lackey Field that was moved to make way for the HCC, as Cape Laney. Laney wouldn't spend the $ to grade it back into the hill so we wound up with a left field that was no deeper than 280 feet. Balls were being launched out of that place like crazy and so many cars were being damaged in the parking lot below (where entrance gates to stadium are now) they put up a quasi Green Monster. It did little to help.

I like the chair lift idea! In the meantime, there is a free bus that goes from Raley/Peacock to the gates of the stadium 3 or 4 times an hour.

RE: Rating the Sun Belt Ball Parks -#8
Smith Stadium has a ton of potential. The indoor facility, clubhand coaches offices are nice, but somewhat cramped. Embracing the old Appalachian mantra "It's better than what we had", Cobb went cheap on the initial build. The turf is due for replacement and Kermit has his eyes on some additional upgrades. One of the biggest problems are the sight lines halfway down in the seating area. You can't see anything down the lines. As JT said earlier raising the stands above the dugouts and adding some bleacher seating down the lines would take care of that issue. A second story on the press box is a must and I'd like to see a roof added. The sound system needs to be upgraded and adding a video board to the scoreboard is a must to bring it up to SB standards. The staff was told last year a batters eye was going to be added, but evidently the guy in charge of it priced the most expensive one on the planet at $80K. All these upgrades would transform it into a legit SB level park. We're never going to need a ton of seats, but we need twice as many as now.

LOL at the "old" ball park next to the football stadium. What I think of as the old ballpark was plowed over to build the convocation center and reroute River St. That field flooded all the time. They built the "new" baseball stadium while I was at App up behind the football stadium. The old "new" ballpark was a nice place to watch a game even though they had to bulldoze the lacrosse field. I quite playing club lacrosse junior year because they moved our field from behind the stadium out to the state farm lot and i didnt want to go all the way out there for practice.
The place where the 2nd Red Lackey Field, now the softball field, is located was dug out and leveled off in 1974. It was initially going to be used as a grass practice field for football then the track team started using it for shot-put practice. After a few sprained ankle so that idea was scratched. For the most part it was used intramurals until the baseball field moved up there. There was also a killer sled hill in the corner, about where home plate is. Several years before the HCC was built the first incarnation of the ASU Convocation Center was planned for that whole mountain top. The state was going to run a access road out the back to HWY 150 which was to serve as the main entrance. The idea was to keep the crowds out of town. It was also going to be serviced by a road off Bodenhimer Drive about where the Greenway Blot is. Well a group of local tree huggers lost their minds over cutting down an "old growth forest" for the sake of progress and a bunch of them protested by chaining themselves to some trees. They all wound up looking like fools when it was revealed the area had been clear cut back in the late 1800's. Guess the did realize trees can grow pretty tall in 100 years.

Forgive my ignorance, for I'm no horticulturist...but couldn't they plant a thick hedge of mountain laurel or something indigenous that climbs? Would be nice to see a thematic tie between our venues. A laurel hedge could be used to eat up some of the wide sidelines we'll have when they finally dig up the track at Kidd Brewer.

It needs to be about 30-40 ft tall, so that could take a while.

There are some trees planted out there, but they ain't growing fast enough.

I feel like we got slanted for having a problem that not many other schools in the country, much less the Sun Belt, have in that our campus is landlocked in a smaller (insert quiet, cozy, sleepy, mountain) town. When we built The Beav, we had nowhere else to put it and installing turf is a necessity, not a choice.

True, but facts *are* facts. Playing on real grass > turf regardless of the reasons you have turf. Playing on campus at a stadium that's walkable from dorms > than having your stadium on top of a mountain regardless of why it's there. All App can do is build and outfit that stadium the best they can with the resources they have (or are willing to allocate). Control what you can control. They've built a decent stadium. Not bad. Not spectacular. Just decent.

When we built Smith Stadium in 2006 it was one of of only a 3 collegiate fields in the country with a 100% artificial surface. Coach Chris Pollard first got the idea from the The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach then paid a vist to the Naval Academy, which was one of the two. Interestingly our pressbox looks a lot like Navy's.

With how much things have been growing in the last week due to alternating rain and sun, it might not need artificial growth.

One of my low-key favorite things about the Beav is when student hippies accidentally stumble out of the woods after smoking it up all weekend and try to comprehend what's going on.
