2018/2019 Schedule
Coach Forbes announced at the Game Time in Greeneville this morning that we are playing at Creighton and in the Sun Bowl classic in El Paso vs UTEP and possibly Wyoming. Also returning a game at Georgia Southern and playing at Georgia State.

Any home games yet or do we just play D2 schools at home? Sorry if this comes off as sarcastic because it is.

That's all he said today. Creighton is the first game on 11/11.

Thanks for the 4-1-1 Meanmike. Did Coach Forbes give out any hints as to if we were expecting any more signings for the upcoming season, or give any thoughts or comments on the others we have already signed?

Working on 2 other recruits. Had a 6-8 guy in this weekend with a 7-4 wingspan.

Said Good has put on 10+ lbs of muscle but still a work in progress on D. Armus is up to 250 lbs and looks great.

Bo is still not cleared to play but should be fine before practice starts in October.

Obi-Rapu is indeed coming back to play next year.

Thanks again. Great info. Excited about Good and Armus. A little worried about Bo and if he will be able to keep his body healthy enough to meet his enormous potential.

I'm on the side of weight training in general. Done right it doesn't mean a loss of mobility. As part of an intelligent overall program, quite the contrary. As Running_Fool, a former D1 runner and D3 coach, can tell you it's a big deal even in cross country nowadays. And they are certainly not looking to lessen mobility.

In a program that tracks even hours of sleep, I've got to think that they are probably doing it right. The muscle that guys like T.J. Cromer have added in Forbes program certainly seemed to help and not hinder their game.

FWIW, I think that Mladen has the frame to carry 250 pounds of muscle and be the better, and more mobile, player for it.

In general, yes. But remember Brad Nuckles. Hard if not impossible to tell what the 'breaking point' will be. Further, not sure how adding weight makes a player more mobile; usually has the opposite effect, all other things being equal. But also, as you say, "done right", doesn't necessarily mean a loss of it.

And yes, while Mladen can easily carry 250, would we rather have him gain 3" of vertical? (Altho that would likely be an unlikely development.) Just raising the question; not complaining.

That caste system in college athletics is still entrenched and has not lived up to the rhetoric of many of the elite institutions ideology of redistribution of wealth, equality, and inclusiveness. Therefore, they ain’t gonna come to your place if you’re on that mid-major caste level, even if you have the seats. So much for practicing what they preach.

RE: 2018/2019 Schedule
The home scheduling problem has been discussed many times. It's very simple, the big boys will not come to JC. It's not money or facilities.

As I understand it, were it not for Kentucky our schedule last year would have been much worse. A number of the teams that played a game at Rupp had to agree to play each other in return for playing KY.

Hope someone helps us again this year.

Would like to see us dump the D2s for Radford, EKU, etc.

Yea, at this time in the 21st century, liberal elitism at the elite institutions of higher education has reached a whole new level of blatant hypocrisy.

Your right, the home scheduling has been discussed. From what BucIsland has mentioned in the Forbes Recap interviews, its been tough to schedule home games in December. Freedom hall is "booked". I just think our squad should be "invited" in one of the fun preseason non-conf tournaments. We haven't played in one since the Diamond Classic in Hawaii back in 07-08.

RE: 2018/2019 Schedule
Sounds like there's a couple of scheduling issues. First, the big conference schools will never come to Johnson City, the exception being UT on occasion. The reality is an away game in Johnson City probably doesn't pay as well and makes it a little more likely to get a loss. Frankly, if I was in their shoes, I don't think I would either. That leaves the remaining conferences available; I think we've gotten some quality opponents in here the past few years of this variety.
The second issue is control of the Freedom Hall calendar. I enjoy Freedom Hall as a place to watch a game; however, it sounds like the basketball games have to fit in around other events and basketball may not get first choice. Control is a big positive of a new arena, although at a pretty hefty price.

RE: 2018/2019 Schedule
A couple of nights ago, in a short TV interview on WJHL (discussing recruiting and the schedule), Forbes said that scheduling games is really harder than recruiting. He said it in a 'sort of' joking way, but you could tell it was a real problem (which of course we all knew). Also as we know, he said we had two scholarships left. That's really about all it was.

RE: 2018/2019 Schedule
There are no Dec. shows booked at Freedom Hall at this time. I believe there was only two events Dec 2017.

ETSU tries to play in tournaments that guarantees they will get home games from other participating schools. Thankfully they got three home games by playing at Kentucky last year or the home schedule would have been worse. Most of the tournaments mentioned in previous posts don't guarantee any home games and they aren't interested in playing in an Asheville tourney. They want to take the kids on a real road trip, not an hour over the mountain, they do that in March.

As far as easier scheduling if they had their own arena, maybe. But remember the university wants to schedule concerts and other events, just as some on this board have advocated. They can not wait until the basketball schedule is completed to schedule events or they will lose events.

As far as ut playing in JC, Barnes made it very clear, they will not play in JC as long as he is coach. Fact is, he tried to buy out the game last year and move it to ktown and the university wouldn't let him out of the contract.

Why do you think the schedule has had teams out of the northeast , coaches are doing everything in their power to get home games that would be attractive. They don't want to schedule D2 teams, but have been forced to in order to fill out home schedule.

YES, THEY COULD PLAY BIGGER NAMES ON THE ROAD, BUT THEY HAVE TO HAVE A LEAST A DECENT NUMBER OF GAMES AT HOME. TEAM CAN'T CONSTANTLY BE ON THE ROAD.

RE: 2018/2019 Schedule
There's absolutely zero excuse in the SoCon, Big South, OVC, and others not working together to play one another in home games.
For me, I'd love to see ETSU play a non-conference schedule that includes:
Winthrop
UNC-Asheville
Radford
Belmont
Lipscomb
Tennessee Tech
Jacksonville State
EKU
MTSU
WKU
Marshall
UNC-Charlotte
UAB
ODU
Kennesaw State
Ga. State (I think we are this year)
Appalachian State

These are all geographically close teams that need home games equally as bad as ETSU, would produce entertaining basketball and should be home and home games beneficial to all.
I would also like to see in the 3rd year of the Tennessee/Memphis series that's in Nashville, a weekend long exhibition style basketball deal including Memphis, UT, ETSU, UTC, Belmont, Lipscomb, MTSU, WKU, and either Murray State or UAB. Match the games up and play a Thursday/Saturday of basketball games at Bridgestone Arena, showcasing the outstanding programs of the region/state.
