RE: Mens Basketball Offseason
Size is important all around but wingspan is always more important for perimeter players. The wider you are, the harder it is to drive by you. No idea what his wingspan is but according to the release about Williams on the KSU site Sendy thinks he can play and defend all three positions on the perimeter. That would lead me to believe he's got some long arms.

I thought Buffalo's length advantage on the perimeter killed us but what was equally troublesome was the fact that we weren't faster. You can't be smaller on the outside without being faster and expect to do well. It looks like Williams is very quick. So that should help too. Based on the videos I've seen of Ali I'm expecting he'll have realtively average speed. However, he's a big three point shooter which should at least stretch defenses and create some room to operate inside. I won't lie the lack of size worries me but there are ways it can work. And it will be easier to hide if Duling can successfully move to the 3 position.

Jaylin Walker tweeted today he was declaring for nba draft but not hire no an agent, so he keeps his eligibility. He said Senderoff suppoerted decision.

No chance for nba, of course. Have heard rumor h was thinking about playing overseas.

Smart move by Walker. Get in front of the international scouts early and get his name out there. Hall did the same thing after his Jr year.

Anybody hear or see anything regarding the assistant coach opening or the final scholarship that is open? (wondering if it will be a D1 post who will sit out after transferring or if it will be a HS senior or JC/CC player?)

Former Missouri State assistant Matt Sligh.

Seems like a logical hire. He's a former JC head coach at motlow (I think we got a recruit or two from there before). So he adds the JUCO recruiting ties to the staff.

Now I remember where I heard of Motlow. That's where Steinberg coached before Kent and where we got Tyree Evans and Frank Henry-Ala.

My sources said Ahmed’s prep school coach put some doubt in Ahmed’s head about coming here. His coach is hoping to use him to get a job. That said, that’s why we signed the combo guard from Indian Hills, to replace him.

RE: Mens Basketball Offseason
If it's true that his prep school coach did that with his own career in mind then he's a POS. If we're being completely honest though, I don't disagree that Ali might not be a good fit at Kent. Based on his numbers and the clips I've seen on him he seems to be an elite shooter but not a great penetrator. We're looking to replace Zabo who was our best slasher last year. Williams seems to fit that need a lot better as he appears to be an elite slasher and finisher.

Also, Ali is 5'11", doesn't appear to have a large wingspan, and appears to be average, at best, athletically. Obviously there's no advanced metrics available for Juco but I'd be willing to bet Ali projects as a below average defender at the D1 level. This would make it very difficult to play him with Avery who has similar size and athleticism and practically impossible to play him with Avery and Walker. We know both of them will be getting a ton of minutes so where would that leave Ali? Again defensively Williams looks to have more potential as he looks to be ridiculously athletic and looks to have a longer wingspan.

Lastly, we've had several Juco players lately that haven't worked out and were gone after one year of not being in the rotation. In many cases it seemed like they lost their rotation spot quickly or never even had one. With the potential lineup issues of playing Ali with our existing guards, if Ali struggles early it'd be easier to drop him from the rotation. So I can definitely understand why people advising him might see this as a dangerous fit for him. This might be us paying the price for not giving longer leashes to guys like DeBerry, Edwards, Nawanwko, and Frederick in the last two years.

To me, the bigger stroy here is we're getting beat by rival MAC schools for wings left and right. Now that it's clear they didn't want to bring Williams in to help at SF then we were still going after the other wings we had offers out to. I really liked Kawanise Wilkins, a 6'6" jc wing with 3 years left, and Patrick Emilien a 6'7" hs wing from Canada. We offered them both this spring and they both recently committed to WMU. Akron also recently got Jeremy Roscoe a 6'3" jc wing that we offered. He also has 3 years left. Lastly OU got Antonio Cowart, a 6'2" jc wing we'd recently offered.

Offers are just that. You have to remember, not everyone we offer do we really want. You have to cast a wide net to get a few catches. So then the question really is how much attention are we paying them? How much contact do we have? How many games did we watch them play? Since we don't know who the priorities are, it is very hard to surmise we are getting "beat" for these recruits. I am not saying you are wrong, just saying it's hard to know who we are really wanting and who we are indifferent about.

That's fair. The other thing is we've been at a disadvantage with two coaching vacancies this spring. We're only just now getting back to a full bandwidth for recruiting.

Per the Plain Dealer Armon Gates just left his associate head coaching job at Florida for an assistants position at Nebraska.

That seems strange to me, although if he was fired, I don't know why UF wouldn't say that. Coach Mike White simply said it didn't feel right and Armon said the same thing. Gates was in Gainesville for 3 weeks before leaving.

RE: Mens Basketball Offseason
Seems like a good add. Watching his highlights looks to have good size and a nice looking jumper. Looks like a good all around scorer with a nice step back, decent first step, and crafty around the basket. Seems like he plays primarily below the rim. Didn't see a dunk in his highlights. A couple years in a D1 training program can certainly help that. When he committed to Bryant their coach said he could play either guard spot. With Avery being a senior and no other true PG on the roster, right now, I suspect we'll try him out at the point some. Doesn't look quite as long as Gholston but looks like he's got solid length. I think Roberts and Gholston will be a nice pair to take over when Avery and Walker are gone and it will certainly be nice having a year of overlap.

Seems like most of the glarring holes are filled now so I suspect they'll be looking for a transfer with the last spot. A young post might be a good idea too as all our posts will be Jr's or Srs next year with the exception of Duling who might move to the 3 anyways.

Here's what O'Shea said about Roberts when he signed with Bryant. http://www.bryantbulldogs.com/sports/mbk...1128iutwj5
