We've all heard it. Spending on college sports is a waste of money in universities.

Well... After this season, there are now more than 30,000 applications to UBuffalo.... That's a record for one year applications to the school.

Great. They've made $1.5 million+ on the application fees (if everyone paid and there were no fee waivers), but what does that really mean? Don't want to burst your enthusiasm, but...

How many have been accepted?
How many have paid their deposit?

Or do you have a number of incomplete applications? Or a number of applications where the student has notified the Office of Admissions they would like to withdraw their application.

May 1 and the first day of the fall semester will give you a better idea if the basketball run leads to more butts in the beds and in the classrooms.

It means you can likely be more selective and/or grow your enrollment. UB has been growing at a healthy (not too fast, not too slow) pace for the past decade.

If you want to talk money...

That growth has mainly come from outside of WNY... A lot of kids from NYC, the Capitol Region, and central NY. WMY has been flat, as has kids from other states.

While out of state students are the "money" you can't ignore that kids coming from outside of WNY are far more likely to live on campus than kids from WNY. That both (1) adds money to the pot and (2) increases the density of student and the student life experience.

Quote:How many have been accepted?

If trends hold I would guess UB will end up admitting somewhere between 4K and 4.5K this year.

Quote:Or do you have a number of incomplete applications? Or a number of applications where the student has notified the Office of Admissions they would like to withdraw their application.

This is the total number of completed applications, from the University.

Quote:May 1 and the first day of the fall semester will give you a better idea if the basketball run leads to more butts in the beds and in the classrooms.

When UB went to the tournament for the first time, under Hurley, it translated the next year.

There is not enough data to prove the causation. How many applications came in after the game was played? Were they qualified applications? How many of those will enroll?

Oh ffs.... This is a pretty obvious trend you see in college athletics.

A tourney run or a high profile bowl by a team that's not expected to do it nearly always created a bump in applications.

Good football and Mens BB runs create well-funded and expanding universities. Thats why NIU now has a billion dollar endowment and 30 thousand undergrads.

It’s called the “Flutie effect”. For you young guys out there, it’s a real thing with tons of info on the Internet. Google it.

See you try to be funny, but the fact is NIU did see a surge in applications after their Orange Bowl game..

http://www.daily-chronicle.com/2012/12/1...k/alsvpgb/

"NIU’s Office of Admissions saw a 19.3 percent increase over last year in applications submitted between Dec. 3 and Dec. 5, the days immediately after the Dec. 2 announcement that the Huskies football team is headed to Miami for the Orange Bowl on Jan. 1."

The fact that Illinois left their university system hanging due to government infighting squandered that opportunity.

I'm surprised there's not some type of brief survey attached to the application asking the applicant to rank the factors influencing their decision to apply...uni's would probably like to know.

I doubt a new student would admit the tie-breaker in choosing a school was an NIU football run or Buffalo's BBall success. I'd guess most would make up a scholastic reason on the survey so as to not look like a knucklehead.

It's a 3 day, 20% boost over a 200 day admissions season.

In other words statistically insignificant.

Oh FFS... That's a sample of the data, not the totally of it, so no, it's not "statistically insignificant". At worst it's incomplete.

First of all while the admissions calendar is a couple of hundred days, the seasons when *MOST* HS kids apply is in the late fall / early winter... Basically between November and mid January.

Secondly this is a well studied pheonoma

http://www.hbs.edu/faculty/Publication%2...e15cd7.pdf

When a school rises from mediocre to great on the gridiron, applications increase by 18.7 percent.

While I don't doubt this, I don't know if a MAC school will ever rise consistently to the level needed to see this growth.

I will say though, I think simply having (reasonably competitive) D1 sports helps to some degree with both application numbers and retention. Anecdotally it was a factor for my decisions and I'm sure I'm not alone. The question would be whether it makes up for the large deficits mid major ADs run, which is really difficult to say.

The reason I went to WMU is because of family going there.

The reason I'm such a big fan of WMU sports is because I've had family play WMU sports.

RE: The next time your local media guy pisses and moans about sports spending
I've always thought it was the other way around; rising academics translates into rising athletics.

An example is the expanding school. University upgrades its mission to become Ohio Poly Tech. Enrollment grows from 15,000 to 25,000. All of the sudden you start seeing 10,000 students at football games. Coaching profession gets word this is a happening place and then before you know it brings in a name coach.

That coach uses the new found atmosphere to sell recruits which leads to more winning and an upward projection of the program. Its a school on the move. Administration is openly talking about joining another conference. An ambitious master plan of FB facilities is sitting in the football coaches office.

The causality is a rising school leads to rising athletics.
