Good to see us scheduling decent opponents at home. Hopefully that translates to fans in the stands.
I came up for the heart breaker vs. BC last year and will be coming up for the Utah game.

I see we play CMU the next week at home.
Let's break that curse.

Agreed. I'm getting a group to go see the game. I dread hearing that war chant though.

“One of the more noticeable things has been game guarantees for football,” Frazier said. “We took a game we wouldn’t normally take, the Florida State game. We added that game to this year’s schedule for the amount of $1.6 million. What’s significant about that is we wouldn’t have taken that game because of the budget. We took it because of the $1.6 million.”

Frazier said adding 2018 opponents such as the University of Iowa, the University of Utah and Brigham Young University was also a direct reaction to budgetary cuts.

Why haven't we been playing these games more? If schools are willing to pay NIU 1M+ to play a football game, Frazier would be a moron not to schedule those games. Being competitive and beating big name schools is how you build your brand. Beating MAC schools on a Tuesday night is how you kill it.
Agreed. Stf is not a moron and we should thank him for scheduling this game and perhaps saving our sports programs who rely on this income.

I'm taking the money, national exposure, etc. It's only blood money if you're totally overmatched, which NIU is not.
Seriously, it took a non-NIU fan to talk some sense. This board can be so damn critical some days.

Also you better believe recruits are paying attention to the quality of our opponents when they’re picking us over U of I, Wisconsin, Indiana and Iowa. Play the tough games for money and respect. NIU Football wasn’t really on the map until we upset ranked Maryland, Alabama, and Iowa State in that dream season.... Go Big or Go Home! I still remember standing in that sold out crowd when we played Maryland. Getting Utah in Dekalb is big time.

As someone else said, telling recruits you get to play FSU Iowa and Utah will stay in most recruits minds. Those are the games players want to play in. Not some crap FCS school that shouldn’t even be a competitive game.

I am looking forward to seeing how NIU stands up to the great competition. Hopefully can lead to a good year. A win or maybe 2 can propel the team to a great conference season.

I'm still haunted from the Orange Bowl. "NA NA NA NA NA NA, NA NA NA NA, NA NA NA NA..." over, and over, and over again. It's like a mass psychosis.

We sat right in front of their section and it was rough w that annoying chant. Would have preferred to sit w NIU fans. Almost makes me not want to visit fsu.

Plus they had their band playing while our offense was calling plays. That was low.

Please do come here and do that. Tonight alone section 8 had a massive brawl which ended up shutting down a section of Hillcrest road while DeKalb pd waited for riot control to come in and reinforce them. Meanwhile hoodlums are jumping fences, running over cars and through private parking lots. My own building had a window shot out. You cant even be safe on campus either as a student was held at gunpoint inside Stevenson hall this year. The Daily Chronicle not too long wrote an article how DPD is undermanned is extremely worried about the increasing violence and decreasing force.. If i told any other student i felt safe here, I would be met with laughter.

Sounds just like Chicago on a typical day. This is why none of our friends with college age kids would send their kids to NIU. They told us that they would never consider NIU because of the violence. I have been a big proponent of NIU over the years, but if I had college age kids today, they would not be going to NIU unless I could control where they live.

I get it. DeKalb is not your typical suburb of Chicago where nothing happens, but to call DeKalb dangerous is an exaggeration. I would send my kids there if it were their best option. Quality school in a quality town. Teach your kids some basic survival skills. Like be aware of your surroundings.

Dekalb was a great, quite little college town when I attended. Sounds like a bad element has moved into a few areas, mostly brought on by lower NIU attendance and empty/cheap apartments coming available as a result. Dekalb is still a nice little community, better than many college towns. Lets hope the state quits holding us back, attendance climbs back up, the bad element dissipates. Alumni saying "I wouldn't send my kids..." doesn't help the issue any. U of I and Northwestern have bad elements near campus and violent crime as well, I don't see their alumni turning and running.

Yes, DeKalb/Sycamore was a wonderful area with so much to offer. When I went to NIU, things were great. We had very little concern. There was a bad element, but it seemed contained, and guns were not much of an issue. Now, there are areas you just don't go into. And the dorms are a problem, too. This is one of the main reasons why the community does not support NIU. DeKalb/Sycamore is a more conservative area, and they do not need or want the Chicago antics. Unfortunately, that's what they are saddled with.

Agreed, just saying this is not an NIU-specific problem. I think Urbana, Charleston and Carbondale all look/feel a bit different then they did 20-30 years ago.

Hoping for more reliable state funding and increased enrollment, pronto.

I would send my kids there if it were their best option. Quality school in a quality town. Teach your kids some basic survival skills. Like be aware of your surroundings.

For sure, I'd send my kids there if they could carry a gun....and use it, if needed, with no repercussions. THAT'S what I call survival skills today. Obviously, there is no chance of that happening. Only the thugs can carry and use guns.

+1

Beat me to it filmmaker...

U of I had the kidnapped/disappearance of student from China last year and they have their share of shootings...
Every campus town I've been around the last 10 years has some areas that you best stay away from late at night.

Take me back to the good 'ol days....03-old
