Ooooooo!!!

Ha...IT'S ON!!!!

So....kind of hard to feel sorry for OG if he is just going to wait to be kicked out of there. At the same time you have to respect his doggedness.

He hints to knowing that the minimum standard is to reach the NCAA postseason. He also hints to some conversations taking place; I assume he would rather be in a pine box than accept a coaching emeritus role something like that where he isn't on the field anymore. Going to be weird if we end up letting him go and watching him get picked up by someone else (I am sure someone will take him on for a few years). At the same time, results on the field are dwindling and that is all on him in my mind. Business decisions all around.

He is not going gentle into the good night. I can admire that. Reminds me of the Neely situation.

Being hard-headed and stubborn is one of the reasons he's a legendary coach. I honestly didn't figure he'd be any other way. That's why its imperative that JK make the tough decision and put a transition plan into motion asap.

What makes you think he hasn't? Because he hasn't announced his decision and plan forward?

Timing. This should have been solved by the end of LAST season. Not now. We are reactive, not proactive.

Much like how we handled FB.. things need to blow up before action gets taken.

Sorry guys, I tried to merge these posts into the "Next Baseball Coach" thread, since the exact same discussion is happening in both. But the site is having some technical difficulties. As soon as the problems are figured out we will merge this into the other thread.

Maybe it has been solved. If JK was actually speaking to TCU assistants when they played us a few weeks into the season I’d say he’s made up his mind. It’s not his fault Wayne won’t retire when his contract is up. Do you think last year’s results merit a termination of his contract? We won a share of the conference title and made a regional.

Maybe. You not being informed of the plan =/= no plan exists.

Fair point. I didn't mean to insinuate that he hasn't. Simply agreeing that he needs to do so or if he has, its the necessary move.

So you think that we should have fired a coach who had an active streak of 22 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances? That would be unconventional wisdom.

No. Unconventional wisdom is having a coach with an active streak of 22 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances in the last year of his contract... unless you plan on firing him anyway in which case you've already made the unconventional choice to fire him, you're merely letting the contract do it and letting the program suffer as a result while you wait it out.

I'm sorry, I just don't buy this whole 'Wayne wouldn't agree' nonsense. It's not for Wayne to agree if the AD doesn't want him here anymore... but it IS for the AD to say that's the case and not hamstring the program.

Being the boss isn't always easy or popular.

We were told that 20 (or 200) people signed a petition to keep DB on, and supposedly that had some influence. I'm betting a multiple of that would sign a similar petition for the OG

I think some here overestimate the affection many *recent* players have for Graham.

I can't speak for the folks that were on the team in glory years, but most recent players aren't exactly going out their way to shower him in praise and glory.

Even on here, you can kind of see that. HolderOwl, 53, etc. posted here many times in support of Bailiff. Not exactly the same with Graham and his recent players.

I also think a crucial difference is that many football players were upset about how Bailiff's program was funded and treated... Can't really say the same about Graham.

A letter was sent to JK and Leebron, with the BOT cc.ed, the second week of the season. It was signed by over 20 major donors, not only to the baseball program and Rice athletics, but the University overall. We've yet to receive a response, and JK has failed to reach out to any of the signees.

First, nobody said anything about that that I can see.

Second, I suspect you don't know... nor do I since few post on here and those that do were with few exceptions, one person..... but

Third, I seriously hope you're not suggesting that we kept DB based solely on the affection his former players had for him or that we'd get rid of WG for the opposite reason?

They're coaches, and while being a good mentor etc is important, the JOB is to produce a successful team.

Only saying this as an extreme of the example and not suggesting it was or is the case, but if I were a mediocre player and had a coach that didn't push me too hard... helped me at every turn... bailed me out when I needed help... picked me up after every mistake and didn't make me practice hard or hold me accountable for my mistakes, I'd love him too.... and the team would suck.

Again... not saying that is what happened at all... just that it is the logical extension of keeping a coach whom the players love over a coach who wins, but they don't love.

I have no problem with 'whomever' deciding that it's time to go in a different direction. That is their job. It doesn't matter what you or I or anyone else thing, unless they ask for input.

It seems they asked for (or perhaps simply listened to) input for ONE coach.

What did the letter say?

It was a very well-written 2-pager (plus the signature page) that initially praised JK and Leebron's V2C2 initiatives, and then gave support to Wayne's request for a final one-year extension (through the 2019 season). The primary argument was given that the season had already started with no decision on Wayne's contract situation, granting-- and announcing-- the one year extension was the "right" thing to do, and what was most becoming of the University in it's treatment of someone who has meant so much to both the Athletic Department and the University overall. And though former players were not amongst the signees as we were focusing on leading, influential, University-wide donors, we have since gained the support of a number of prominent former players, who played for Wayne from the mid-1990s through the 2016 seasons.

Sounds like v2.0 of the Bailiff 200.

+100. If you can watch our teams over the last few years and think nothing is wrong I’m extremely glad you’re not making the decisions for our athletic department.

No idea, as I never saw the Bailiff letter, but a key difference is that the latter was composed exclusively by former and current players; whereas the Wayne letter was signed by alumni donors who contribute leadership donations/gifts across the University.
