RE: 2018-19 Hoops schedule
I am really excited about the OSU series. I hear a lot of Chris Holtmann on the radio up here and I think he’s both a really good coach and very sincere about scheduling more regional teams. Thad Matta wanted no part of the Cincinnati schools and generally played a weak schedule.

No question, this was a major breakthrough and apparently Holtmann was the driving force. Keys in my mind now are playing a great game in November in a sold out 5th/3rd, attracting a large national TV audience and leveraging the passion around this matchup to extend the series.

If Holtmann only wants two games that's two more than anyone else at OSU has wanted in a long time. But my hope is he looks around the state and realizes "regional" games with Cleveland State or Toledo won't move the needle for OSU the way an ongoing series with Cincinnati could.

I've gathered from local radio that OSU has some basketball attendance issues, so they could benefit greatly from the series.

I think they way overbuilt on their arena and have lots of empty seats on many nights. Hey, let's hope we can take seven or eight thousand fans in there in two years and create at least a neutral court atmosphere in Cowtown.

That arena is awful. They had one of the most unique, intimidating home courts in St. John Arena, then went and built that cold, NBA-esque monolith. Ohio State fans generally hate the Schott.

It's consistent with the institutional attitude up there that OSU must always be the biggest and best. While it remains the biggest, 5th/3rd will be the best starting this season based upon the design sketches and construction updates.

Those who know, correct me if I'm wrong. My recollection was that when Shoemaker Center was built, someone made sure it had at least one less seat than St. John Arena. Actually, it might have been a couple hundred but the point was UC was not going to get (and fill) a larger arena than big brother. Even to the point of never allowing standing room, per the fire marshal of course.

Holtmann just came from coaching in Indiana, where the main schools (IU, ND, Purdue, Butler) are all rivals both on the court and in recruiting, yet they have mutual respect enough to play each other.

I'm really shocked that he got O$U, who has always looked down their nose at the other Ohio schools, to even play us... let along come to our place.

You saw what happened when O$U let their guard down in 2002 and played us at home in football. That'll never happen again.

Where was O$U during the Huggins years? I'm sure Huggins would have played them.

Yet once the program got blown up and Cronin basically was fielding an intramural team, who came a calling?

So yeah, I give credit to the dude for loosening things up around here. It would be nice if we make them... regret it.

Absolutely correct. It was actually 100 seats as it seated 13,276. It was the epitome of pettiness.

This and they forced UC to build a multi-purpose facility versus one geared towards its main tenant.

...because state money was used to pay for it.

RE: 2018-19 Hoops schedule
I wonder how good it would be to be recruiting hard in Canada. I know a number of Ontario high schools are transforming to American type football and scheduling a lot of Ohio schools in the regular season, which has to help get their players into American colleges. With basketball, the sport is already the same.

Although he hails from Africa originally, Eliel Nsoseme played his high school ball in Canada.

People used to criticize the strength of schedule. Now that the schedule's beefed up, the standard rhetoric is now that Cronin only beats the cupcakes.

...Just like a couple polar vortexes have changed global warming crowd to now use the all encompassing term of "climate change".

Point being... you're never going to win with critics because the criticism always changes.

Ya with me?

I still think the comparison is absurd. "Climate change" is used because too many idiots didn't understand the difference between weather and climate and said "It's cold outside, so global warming is bs." Climate change isn't a term that's used to run from the fact that the earth is warming. But this really isn't the spot to talk about it.

Uhhhh... I think you're reading a little too much into it, dude. It was never about the weather.

Besides, Doss liked it.

Thus proving just how stupid it was.

Lol.

No, now it's "Mick only beats the cupcakes."

Kind've like how "global warming" has turned into "climate change".

Outside of this tournament, OSU, and X, what else do we know about the 18-19 schedule?

Both SOS and inability to win big games have BOTH been valid criticisms, so I’m not sure that one is simply “replacing” the other, especially in the context of climate change supposedly replacing global warming (climate change by definition encompasses the effects of the global warming.) You seem to be making an argument the exact opposite of what you intended.

Oh my gosh. It's not about the weather.

But since you brought it up...

Actually, no one is saying that the SOS is bad anymore, because it's NOT. So yeah, the narrative has in fact changed there.

And please, no more explanations needed on the inconvenient truth that changed it's name to a convenient phrase that covers all the bases.
