Through the first few guys in the lineup you can already see a changed approach via a new hitting coach in Chile Davis.

and Lester getting smacked around. Not good. the Happ kid looks impressive. I have him on one squad
Defense failed Lester today. Despite being the opening day starter, he's our #3-4 starter. I'm not worried about him yet/
1-0 for now, only 103 or more wins on the year will do.
Man, the Cubs sure look sluggish out of the gate. Hopefully the bats wake up soon.
Not impressed with Boone thus far. He's picking up right where Girardi left off with pen mismanagement. They should be at the very least 3-1, maybe 4-0. Both losses are on him. Hope it's just learning urve and not the norm.

Jonny-boy with a solid effort in his second start, 6 IP, 3H, 0 R. Can always count on Jon to compete.

Baez is so much fun to watch. Plays hard, but loose, and has an extremely high baseball IQ. His glove, oh his glove is magic. If he ever figures it out at the plate consistently, he'll be a superstar. In terms of position player importance, I rank him pretty high for Chicago: Bryant, Rizzo, Contreras, Russell, Baez...I think he's part of the "core". I suppose I've covered the entire infield, but in terms of future prospects, I like him better than Schwarber, Happ or Almora.

RE: 2016, 2017, and 2018 MLB Thread
Cubs and Nationals have to be the surprise of the NL.
Both are just not getting it done. I'm more surprised with the Nationals than I am with the Cubs. The Nationals have better pitching top to bottom, and the bats to go with it. the Cubs on the other hand, IMO have really succeeded the last few years with average pitching. They have 2-3 quality starters, but after that... it's a real crapshoot. That chicken is finally coming home to roost on them this year so far. Where the Cubs don't get a pass is the offense. Their lineup is loaded. They either all show up, or none of them do. Personally, I like Joe Maddon, but one criticism I have of him is his constant tinkering with the lineup. I played a lot of baseball growing up and play a decent bit of softball now. What I do know is that if you're always moving the lineup around, the offense never finds a comfortability to produce.
Rant over.
I'm so glad baseball is back though. It's a nice break from the NFL and NBA constantly diving into politics. Baseball, by and large, tends to avoid that topic and just play the game.

LOL we'll see at the end of the season. And your former #1 prospect is tearing the over off the ball at triple A and is likely to get called up Thursday.
Cubs have the same record BTW.....

I was speaking more to the benches clearing against Boston than I was to their record. Austin should've taken his medicine and walked to first base.
I'm not worried about Torres either. Chicago doesn't win it all in '16 without Chapman. We payed a lot, but brought home a championship. Torres isn't going to be a Lou Brock situation where Cubs' fans wring their hands wondering what might have been, at least IMO.

Do you mean our catchers, d'Arnaud and Plawecki? d'Arnaud is always hurt, so that's no surprise there.
For whatever its worth, the entrance of Mickey Callaway has come along with the Mets finally joining the 21st century when it comes to their medical team. They have all new strength & conditioning staff, team doctors, etc. That should help the team stay healthier than years past, all other things being equal.
If we can even be a league average type of team when it comes to injuries, we're still looking like at least a Wild Card team. When the Nats get Daniel Murphy back they'll look a lot better, but its nice to have some distance between them and us even this early in the season.

I'm glad he charged the mound, F Joe Kelly that pu$$Y! Why wait 3 pitches to do it? Brock Holt didn't seem to have a problem with the slide after the game.

Austin did zero wrong and was hit with purpose so why should he take it? The slide was not even close to being a dirty play and the Boston player cried like a little girl about it. The only thing different Austin might have done would be charge faster or maybe he should have hamslammed the punk who cried about the slide. Its always something about Boston players .

I like the Cubs staff. It's dependent on Darvish been a TOR guy, but I think Quintana and Hendricks are fine slotted at 2-3, and Lester isn't what he was 3 years ago, but he's still fine as your fourth starter. Chatwood is a high upside guy that was solid away from Coors last year. And, the pen looks really strong this year. I'm much more worried about the offense than I am pitching.

Joe and the players deserve some criticism. It's early, but if this inconsistency plays out through the end of the year, the front office will have to answer questions too. Getting Fowler back in 2016 was extremely lucky, and after his departure they haven't given the staff anyone that can lead off. Honestly, I'm not overly concerned about anyone in the infield, but I have a lot of questions about Schwarber, Happ and Almora in the OF.
Getting Rizzo back from the DL will certainly be a help too.

I don't have a dog in the Bos/NYY fight, but he slid late on a play that had no chance at being turned into two outs, and came in with his cleat up. It wasn't a huge deal, but neither is the retaliation of beaning him during his next AB.

Harold Reynolds broke it down brilliantly on mlb network(he also had no problem with the retaliation) when Austin went into his slide, Holt was still in the pivot position, as a runner, your instinct is to break it up. After Austin started his slide, Holt moved his feet to a stretch(1b like stretch) for 1 out. Harold said he would have had more issue with the slide had Holt maintained the stretch position the entire time.

Reynolds also acknowledged that his cleats were up. Brock could've "given himself up" earlier sure. But they had no chance at 2 off of the bat. Regardless, the beaning wasn't charge-the-mound worthy, which is really what I took exception to.

Fair enough. I have no problem with him charging, why? Because F the Red Sox! Scumbags!
My favorite quote was from Holt when asked why he didn't mix it up "they have some big guys over there, i had no interest in mixing it up with them."

Actually, I can respect that response. The slide wasn't "dirty" but the spikes were up. But, if there's already an edge because of the rivalry, so be it.
I liked Holt's quote. Judge was moving the pile for sure.
Here's what Chipper had to say:
U slide in with ur spikes up and catch a piece, ur gonna get thrown at young fella. That’s how baseball works. It polices itself, whether people like it or not. That will never change. Love the spirit in both squads though. #Redsox/Yankees
