haha haha that's not happening. The only way that happens is if they lose a ton of schools. Some of you are out there by a mile, make no sense.

Who’s getting in over UMass next time there’s an opening? UMass is one of about 6-8 schools with a fighting chance as BYU/MW schools probably aren’t happening.

WKU has been looked at as a bridge between Memphis and Cincinnati.

Their football has been pretty good in recent years. Their basketball is storied.

That is if the AAC has an opening with 11 teams. If they end up at 10 or 8 or 9 they might not backfill at all or just backfill in basketball (SLU, Dayton, VCU ect).

What makes you think AAC will choose a school based on their athletic performance? Tulane wasn't exactly setting the world on fire.

They did it with Tulsa because of how well their FB team performed the prior decade in CUSA. A perfect example of a low hanging fruit addition.

SMU and Tulane were more market/prestige type additions.

Well for one, it depends on what they might lose. You have to remember that there are 4-5 programs theyd look ask due to past association. Marshall and USM have the best accolades as programs to move on in, with WKU and UAB waiting on the wings, not to mention Rice and UTEP if they are not with the MW by that time. Temple and Uconn arent going anywhere. ACC isnt calling those two. Army likes being Army. With Navy, Temple and UConn on board they don't really have a need to add more in the NE as an excuse to add a program. They will go after the best they can get, and that isn't UMass unfortunately.

The pause in realignment can only help UMass as we start taking care of business.

That's kind of the point - nobody big's scheduling UMass to a h&h because they're a MAC team. The P5 schools that schedule those types of h&hs are the lower-level programs looking to go 4-0, or at least 3-1, in OOC play so that 2 or 3 conference wins gets them bowl eligible and chasing that sixth win can keep the fan base engaged in a poor conference performance. Those schools aren't basing heir decision on whether or not someone's an indy.

You clearly do not understand the effects of such things on recruiting. No one is fighting to acquire UMass, keep talking out your ass.

People aren't dumb. How often is UMass honestly getting that access bowl spot out of the MAC? Once every two decades seems high, doesn't it? It'd require UMass running off an undefeated season in a year where the AAC and MW champs are lackluster - basically what WM did. Under a current system where in an average decade the access bowl spot probably goes to the AAC 5-6 times, the MW 2-4 times, and the MAC once or twice having any real consistent shot at that game means winning the MAC on a consistent basis and praying for luck on top of it. This on top of UMass operating at some real structural disadvantages in the MAC in terms of recruiting territory and (to a lesser extent, but still real) facilities.

UMass not being 100% committed to keeping football FBS long-term, and not wanting to sever themselves from the prime mid-Atlantic basketball recruiting territory the A10 overlaps makes sense in this light. Hockey's a non-factor in this discussion, as UMass is already exactly where they want to be in that sport. The potential for the MAC to launch MAC hockey by getting to 6 with UMass as a full member, a theoretical Buffalo launch, and an affiliate is something I would imagine UMass would view as a significant downside, not a feature.

Who cares how often a MAC team get to the access bowl........the whole friggin point is that they do have access to it.......something an independent doesn't have. Why is that soo hard to understand. I get it for those who defend UMass decision, and argue moot points, or crap that doesn't even add up, but damn, its not hard to understand that 1+1=2. Read the damn laws, if you aren't a conference champion, you can't have access to it. Yes the MAC can and has sent one, and came real close to another one (WMU went, Kent almost went). If you think that not having access to such rewards doesn't have an effect on recruiting or whatever it is that can help a program, you obviously have no idea what rewards a recruit likes. One thing is certain, they like spotlight, the bigger the spotlight you can offer, the better the recruit you can get. Again, its not hard to understand, yet some continue to debate it............geez

As far as 1 for 1, how many belt teams do you see getting 1 for 1s? CUSA can name a bunch, as can the MW and AAC, and without even looking, I bet the MAC can too. Schools like Penn state rarely play away games period, then you have the schools that don't have a choice, like Pitt, Purdue etc. Marshall was in the MAC when the 2 for 1 deal was signed with K State. Marshall in CUSA has had 1 for 1s with Purdue, UL, ongoing with NC State, blah blah blah. Again, you know nothing about what is happening with any school in that conference (MAC) because you haven't bothered to look.

Northern Illinois went instead of Kent State by beating the Flashes in the 2012 MAC title game. Two MAC teams have played in New Year's Day during the past five years or so.

Not bad for a bus league, eh?

For UMass, other benefits of being in the MAC include more hardware to play for -- division titles and league titles, for example -- as well as ease in scheduling, and a somewhat easier path to a bowl game. (I suppose in this day and age some bowl game somewhere would take a 7-5 UMass, but I've got to think this would still be easier for UMass (less costly, for example) if UMass was in a conference.

So far, UMass seems to be satisfied playing out an independent schedule. It doesn't feel like a long term solution to me. But UMass didn't want to bring its other sports to the MAC and the MAC didn't want to keep letting UMass affiliate as a 13th football school. So, for now, here we are.

You honestly think that the probability of an outcome occurring makes no difference when trying to sell a football player based on that outcome? Strictly speaking, UConn has access to the College Football Playoff, but if Randy Edsall successfully sells a single kid on coming to UConn because they'll have a chance to win a national championship in football the man deserves a raise. Playing in the Consolation Bowl is a once every two or three decades kind of thing for UMass in the MAC, which means it's not something you base your entire athletic department alignment around.

The American is about city schools. UConn and ECU are outliers.

The "core" of Tulsa, Tulane, Memphis, Cincy, Temple, Houston, SMU, WSU, UCF, and USF are all basically big city universities with around 50-60M budgets.

The "peak AAC" schools are Memphis, Cincy, Houston, and Temple. If you ask me "what's an AAC school like?", I will point you to those four.

The MAC has nobody and it seems like they don't exist.

They will replace the AAC, as MWC rival as soon as the new AAC tv deal of 8 to 10 mil per team tv deal gets done next year.

Will set up perfect for G4 playoffs..
