Bronco Men's tennis team with BIG win over pre-season favorite Buffalo today!
They're 2-0 in the MAC beating UT last night and then the big win over MAC pre-season favorite Buffalo today. The player stats are not posted yet, but we won 5-2 so it was a convincing win. Played on neutral territory at University of Toledo.
Another non-revenue sport with little fanfare and almost no coverage, but a winning attitude. Coach Morin has put together a winning program. They last won the MAC 2 seasons ago, I believe-but we're 6-1 in MAC games each of the last two seasons.
We've got players from Germany (several), Japan, Philippine Islands, Croatia, Canada and the balance Americans. A good mix of seasoned veterans and newcomers with an outstanding class of recruits coming in next fall.
Come out and see a match at the Sorensen Inside Courts, next weekend is NIU. You have a winning program, come see the guys do their stuff!

Tennis is usually pretty good. Not surprised.
Baseball isn't great, but seem to be holding their own (which is good in a sport we usually are completely terrible at)
Happy to see our Olympic sports are doing well as our Big 3 were all average at best this year! :)

There may not be a lot of fans in the stands, but they represent WMU and they're doing it with a lot of success. One more thing-you rarely see players bolt our Tennis programs to play at another school for a 'better situation' for themselves. They're happy as heck to get a college scholarship and matriculate at WMU.
The more I see these ungrateful student-athletes leaving Western because of their egos the more I turn my back on the 'revenue sports'. Almost none of those players is pro-material, so why not be grateful you're being given a stipend to get a college degree while others are having to pay for it themselves? To me, zero gratitude and zero appreciation means zero character.
Let's recruit some folks who are team players and want to play at Western and get a degree there. If they can't accept that, they belong somewhere else anyway. And if that means we have limited success in the NCAA tourny, that's a 'sacrifice' I at least can live with.

I agree. Definitely an issue. Happy the tennis team doesn't do that as a whole.
(One of my thoughts towards that football player we had that wanted to bolt to Minnesota but wasn't allowed to so had to play with us this past year: If he doesn't want to play with us, let him walk. We don't want him and that just further increases the impression that our athletes don't want to stay if given a choice)
(I have a friend who was actually went to the same high school and the same graduating class as one of our tennis players from a few years ago. He played all 4 years at Western)

And the Bronco Men's tennis team just keeps winning. 4-0 in the MAC, 11-0 at Home, 17-4 overall with wins over Iowa and MSU and a razor-thin loss to Penn State-all the Big 10 games at their Courts, naturally.
If we beat Buffalo next sunday we'll likely win the MAC and go into the Tourny with the first seed. I'm predicting we do that and go into the Tourny 7-0 in the MAC with a great chance of being both Regular Season and Tourny champion.
Little fanfare, few fans show up to watch but they keep on winning for Western. Amaaaaazing.

Awesome!
Sometimes the smaller, "non-revenue" sports are a heck of a lot more fun to watch then the big'ns.
Thanks for posting.

My pleasure. Western has some great international players on this year's men's team, but we seem to have a real connection with German players in particular. We have 4 players who originally come from Germany. Maik Steiner is playing his last season as a Bronco and he's been a strong player from Day 1.
Unfortunately, if you haven't seen them play yet you'll have to travel to do so. We have three away games at Buffalo, Binghampton and Toledo and then the MAC Tourny in Buffalo, NY.

That’s the understatement of the century. Morin in his 21 seasons as coach might have more MAC titles than all the other WMU sports in history combined. This year offers him the chance at #20 and 21 if they win the regular season and conference tourney. They are a powerhouse.

Two of our players including the team captain transferred from elsewhere. I guess they must be quitters or not team players or whatever.
I'm not sure why the crusade against students looking to better their situation? Non athletes transfer all the time for a multitude of reasons. Hell, I had a couple friends that loved WMU but transferred because they wanted to switch majors and WMU didn't offer the program. Why so strident?
The men's tennis program is worth celebrating. It doesn't need to be tied to your weird obsession with college kids' personal decisions.

Not only MAC champions, but 6-0 in the league and the # 1 seed in the tourny.
Well done Coach Morin and the Bronco Men's Tennis team!
