Edit: He's pretty highly thought of. Wonder if this means Kershaw is not a full time assistant?

Looking at their record they’ve been pretty successful. I’m glad we finally hired a well thought of Texas coach to the staff. Hard to complain about anything we’ve put together so far.

Bloomgren

Offense:

1) Mack
2) Picazo
3) Ashfield
4) Best
5) Svboda

Defense:

6) Smith
7) Calhoun
8) Vestal
9) Delaware State guy

Special Teams:

10) Lembo

Not sure where Kershaw fits in here... I know he was one of the ten assistants originally as he recruited the guy we signed from Opelousas... But he has not been added to the staff directory yet, so something must’ve happened. Appears he’s still on staff in some capacity though, judging by his Twitter.

Svoboda won the Houston TD Club 6A sportsmanship award this past season. He was also a finalist for Coach of the Year. Dave Campbell's named him the Houston area Coach of the Year after the 2016 season.

Maybe Kershaw ends up as a quality control coach on offense?

Good article on Svoboda: http://vype.com/houston/2018/02/28/klein...all-staff/

Key takeaways:

"While at Kein Collins, a Svoboda coached team was going to be known for running the ball right at you all night long.

Klein Collins under Svoboda has produced running backs such as Justin Pratt (McNeese State), Jamichael Rozier (Prairie View A&M) and currently Isaiah Spiller (Oklahoma verbal commit).

With his track record of quality running backs coming out of his program and the fact he played the position, Svoboda said taking this job with Rice was a natural fit.

“To coach the position I played that made it even better,” he said. “I have a passion for running backs. I can use my ‘pound the rock passion’ and be focused on that, which is a big deal too.”

.....................................
On the recruiting trail, especially in Houston, Svoboda shouldn’t have any trouble getting into high schools to get players for Rice.

Svoboda served as the President of the Greater Houston Coaches Association this past year and said he knows about 95 percent of the coaches by name and will help him in this process.

“It’s a special student athlete that goes to Rice,” Svoboda said. “It’s a challenge but it’s a good challenge. The quality of degree and everything that goes with it, is what is really making it exciting and attractive for me. Anytime you’re promoting a product you want to believe in it.”

I think he was always brought in for the quality control or player personnel or similar role. I think he was included in the staff so he could recruit, then moved when the staff filled out. That would be my guess.

Drew is an incredible person....and a great coach. He actually started out as a fullback at Nebraska and transferred to SFA to finish his degree and play for the Lumberjacks. I'm pumped about this hire. He's got a great reputation and relationship with Houston area coaches. It will no doubt help in recruiting.

Mike Kershaw is still not listed at riceowls.com, but he updated his twitter profile and is listed as a "Player Personal/Offensive Analyst at Rice University." Can we sign up ruowls as an emeritus or volunteer "Offensive Analyst"?

He appears in the Rice Directory as "service provider visitor", while the other coaches are classified as "staff". Maybe he is only here for a short period or an official position hasn't been created yet?

I will be happier when the coordinators justify the trust.

This next season will be the most interesting in years, regardless of results.

what up folks....been really busy...lots of family situations and kinda like seniorowl i take long breaks because i've realized over the 15yrs I've been associated with the parliament that my words rarely have any affects on the things i find near and dear to me....maybe one day that will change...dunno...lol

i really have been trying to get to a spring ball practice, really wanted to go to the former player day on april 20th, but as i stated i have so much to do family wise i just can't get away....i'm at practices monday through friday, track meets on wednesday...tournaments on the weekends...no room to breath honestly....

what i will contribute is drew is a darn good coach. i coached against him when he was at KC. yes, his teams were physical on offense(very physical). they had little imagination, but he knew about blocking angles and his schemes are just different enough that people hadn't seen a lot of it before. i don't know how that translates to the college game. schemes work but its about the jimmies and joes up here. the coaching is better and the players are better. every time there is a new coach that comes in i'm always very very disappointed. there is NEVER a hire from a former player. we have many across the nation that are able and can coach and recruit on this level. we are never given a chance....todd graham is at langham creek doing very well year in and year out, why not reach out to him? we aren't even brought in to be like a community liaison, how about someone that is a go to for the players as a bridge to the coaches and/or faculty? there are many many ways they could bring in a former player that actually knows what it is like to be on this campus cause they don't know....not one of them. they don't know the challenges this school faces and how to over come them and what it feels like to go through them......but hey what do i know i just played here....lol......

hope the boys have a better year...i slide in and out to see what's up.....go owls

I'd like to see some former Owls get coaching staff positions too. I think you mean Todd Thompson, not Todd Graham, at Langham Creek. But there are a lot of good ones, including you. And if you want to get a strong position in the outstanding recruiting market that is greater Houston, no better way than to bring in HS coaches with connections in the area.

I've said before, if I were building a staff for a university football team, I'd hire 3 coordinators--offense, defense, and special teams--that had great schemes and I knew I could trust them to implement those schemes. I'd try to keep one or two from the old staff--particularly ones with recruiting contacts--for continuity. Then everybody else would be chosen for their ability to recruit, some locally, some nationally, some college, some high school, including some alumni of the school.
