Only against progress in Birmingham....the long arms of the machine 50 miles southwest of Birmingham. But the city council passed measure so on to the next hurdle. I don't believe we've seen the last of this passive aggressive resistance from those looking to throw a wrench into the process.

While I doubt we've seen the last of our mecha-loving androids from just down 20/59, I'm sure this was that.

The majority of the resistance that we saw on this was from the people who will be most effected by this - those who live in the immediate surrounding areas of the stadium. As rook360 said...

I'll take that bet.

Especially b/c the Druid Hills Neighborhood Association spoke and said specifically that they were against it BECAUSE IT WASN'T the 75k domed stadium. Like, very specifically used those words.

Because they want a dome to replace Legion Field. They’d still have been against a dome in Uptown if all other things were equal due to the other factors they brought up.

RE: O’Quinn on his no vote
They don't want what happened in Avondale to happen to Druid Hills. I get it, if you already live there rising values drive you out of your house because rents rise if you rent and taxes rise if you own. On the other hand if all these neighborhoods remain slums forever then Birmingham will continue to fall behind. It's a tough problem to solve, and I understand the issues the residents have.

The flip side is, if the city never does anything to increase revenue, then all of those things they want done can't be done. Should protections be put in place where practical to help residents survive gentrification? Absolutely. Should the city council and the mayor be talking about that stuff? Absolutely. Problem is the BJCC project has been on the drawing board for a very, very long time, and if it's going to happen it had to start now. The mayor and several of the councilors are new, but that is not an excuse. They need to take the initiative and get involved and up to speed with what is happening in the city. They shouldn't expect people to spoon feed them. It comes back to taking initiative and asserting leadership. Woodfin has started to show some leadership, but there definitely isn't anyone standing up and taking charge like Bell and Austin did.

Basically people around Legion Field don't want those around Uptown to have something nice instead of them and those around Uptown are too stupid to realize that it is something nice for them.

Another issue is that Jefferson County votes commissioners in districts who aren't accountable to anyone else in the county so you can have 3 idiots who screw things over for the rest of the county.

That's incredibly dismissive...and frankly, would appear borderline racist if I saw it in any other place. The people of Druid Hills have valid concerns...even if you can't understand them.

Did I want the stadium to go through? Yes. Do I expect the people of Druid Hills to shut up and take their medicine? No. This city has squandered a lot of potential and money in the past and communities like Druid Hills are the most affected by that.

Atlanta is just as balkanized (if not worse) and has a lot of the same governmental issues as Birmingham and Alabama. It's possible to overcome that stuff if you want to, it's just that a lot of people in Birmingham (both the city and metro area) don't want to.

I mean, that's how county commissions work. The problem isn't that the commissioners aren't accountable. The districts have roughly equivalent population sizes. It's just that the difference between inside the city limits and outside the city limits is pretty drastic politically.

RE: O’Quinn on his no vote
In some places commissioners are voted on by the whole county instead of districts.

That is in particular what I was mentioning.

We had a case a few years ago that impacted my area where a couple of commissioners could tag team & stick it to a different district.

Mary Buckalew comes to mind.

If you lived around Legion Field, wouldn't you?

And the second part of your statement is out-of-line and just plain wrong. If you had listened to the ENTIRE meeting and heard what they said, most (not all) had very articulate and sound arguments. And they deserved to be heard.

Calling a group of people stupid just because they go against what you want calls into question whether you should be heard or not.

Their houses actually might be bought in the process for a lot more than they are actually worth.
Win / Win.

I'm sure those around Legion Field have had the same argument for years & yet same ol' same ol'.

I remember being against Fultondale tearing down the softball field & YMCA to build stores, etc.

I was wrong then myself.

Jefferson County actually used to elect all commissioners at-large.

Yes. We had a couple of commissioners team up to try and stick a county jail out towards my area.

Buckelew, White, & maybe McNair, etc. Then of course we were represented by Betty Fine Collins who wasn't squeaky clean herself.

Win / Win.

it's not a win/win if they don't want to move. I know it's shocking, but the pursuit of money is not the end all be all goal of every human being on the planet

Every plan proposed by every side was a double-edged sword. I have to say that I think the BJCC plan was a conservative choice that also has the most upside for the communities that opposed it. You need more tax revenue to improve areas like Smithfield and Druid Hills without gentrification and forced relocation. I think the BJCC project does that better than a 75k seat retractable roof stadium that would suck every last tax dollar from the city.

Not the same people but two sides of the same coin. To quote an ex president, they're clingers. Clinging to the old power structures, the old animosities, the old ways of thinking. Spending so much time and energy on protecting their sliver of the pie instead of stepping back and seeing that the pie could be so much larger.

They both fought the future and lost. Thank God and Go Blazers!

You can add Ron Jackson & John Rogers to the list of those who are anti-progress.

So I am to believe that the citizens of North Birmingham (Druid Hills) are against the new stadium while the citizens near Legion Field are all for spray painting the gray lady from now on until the cows come home.....I don't think so. While getting %100 buy in on anything is impossible, I would wager the majority of that area of town is for the project being that the alternative is just the existence of empty lots east of the old SS building. Nothing surprises me at this point.

Yeah, I remember Bettye. If memory serves me correctly, when she was chairperson of the county's Finance & General Services Department her mantra was "No debt. No dome. No democrats".
