My thoughts on Larry Brown
From the sound of things, Penny wants him and he would say yes. Tom Bowen just has to sign off.
This really is a no brainer. The man is one of THE best basketball minds EVER and he WANTS to be here. Yes, I understand the NCAA issues, but I would rather address that with him and put parameters in place to keep him between the lines, rather than completely rule him out. Plus I’m not sure how motivated he will be to break rules as an assistant who isn’t really responsible for recruiting.
Plain and simple...he’s too good to pass on.

Agreed...
I don't understand the issues...The positives outweigh the negatives by far in my mind.

RE: My thoughts on Larry Brown
Absolutely, Xs and Os and mentoring Penny with zero recruiting responsibilities (or oversight of online classes, ha). He's still a net positive for sure. Larry Brown, Tony Madlock, Mike Miller? If Mike Miller really wants to grind then sure!
I actually think Penny will be fine with the X and O stuff, he was an NBA point guard after all so he's run way more complicated sets than he'll need to at Memphis. The basic stuff they did at East might even cut it, especially with a true PG like Lomax running things. They'll look to score off the press and in transition so just put in some motion action against man and a zone attack and you're good for year 1. Having Larry Brown right next to him for situational stuff would just be gravy.
Pastner and Calipari both kinda sucked at Xs and Os, relatively speaking. Great point guards hide that a whole lot; when Joe Jackson left Pastner got exposed big time. Penny ought to be somewhere in between Pastner and Tubby, with a higher ceiling than Tubby and better talent than either of course so it won't matter as much.

It makes me nervous, probably for the same reasons as Bowen but would be REAL exciting!

Please stop with the popular narrative that Cal can't "coach". It's just a lazy, irrational/emotional thing to spew and it's ridiculous. The guy is one of the best all around coaches of the modern era.

My thoughts on Larry Brown
Get the NCAA to say he’s now all squeaky clean like they did for Calipari when he went to UK.

My thoughts on Larry Brown
Why wouldn't you do it? A HOF coach who would help Penny with a weakness. Do it now.

Bowen needs to go. He should have bee fired for the partner contract. He should have been fired for the tubby hire. Why is he still here?

And if that happens then Penny wasn't allowed to hire the staff he wanted. He wasn't allowed to hire one of the best teachers and Xs and Os coaches in the country. So if this doesn't work out I hope folks remember that.

Can we just enjoy this experience? If it happens with Larry Brown it happens.
Either way it'll be fine.

RE: My thoughts on Larry Brown
Tom Bowen did NOT select the last 2 basketball coaches
Nor did he select Penny
Folks much higher up made all those selections

I have no problem with both enjoying this experience and also hoping it continues into the future. I'm not even sure that's multitasking

Bowen should have zero input on this decision or any decision regarding football or men's basketball staff. He can knock himself out making decisions for all the other sports. That should give him plenty to do.
