Thought we should have a thread for all our non-basketball Dragons. Perhaps if any one sport takes off, it can split off into its own thread.

Seems like quite a few of the winter teams had decent seasons. Wrestling finished ranked #25 in the country and earned its highest placing at the EIWA championships in school history (granted they haven't been in the conference for all that long, but it's still a feat). Both squash teams finished in the top 15, with the women coming in at 9th and the men at 13th. And men's swimming finished 2nd in the CAA, with Alexa Kutch of the women finishing 22nd in the 100-backstroke at NCAA's.

RE: Other Sports
i was really excited to see allentown is hosting ohio state and penn state in the ncaa hockey tournament this weekend. i would recommend getting to freedom high school in bethlehem at 1 pm for the 6a eastern final between hazleton and abraham lincoln...then head over to the hockey games.

i bring this up because hockey would've been an interesting sport to try expand at drexel. we always had a good club team. i never went to a game myself but always heard they were pretty good.

in the time we've built up squash...penn state has built up hockey. i'm not naive enough to say we could ever build an ice palace like penn state has. that sure as hell didn't hurt. they seem to understand what sports people care about though.

RE: Other Sports
We'd probably join the Atlantic Hockey Conference if that were to happen. No CAA members but they have two PA members in Niagara and Robert Morris, and they're generally mid-major level for NCAA hockey. It'd be much harder to reach the high rankings that the squash team achieves just because the sport is so much more competitive, and they'd probably have to work out an agreement with Penn to use their rink for home games.

RE: Other Sports
Penn State got a hockey program because of donors who made it a priority. Drexel's big donors build academic building so that our student can prosper. Penn States donors build stadiums so that their athletes can prosper and their fans can go "rah rah rah we are penn state and we're better than you".

I'm not going necessary want to argue which is the better way to go...Drexel and Penn State are two completely different schools with different levels of athletic income and different priorities.

I will say that a Drexel D-1 hockey team makes no sense right now. They've got to focus on improving their basketball and lacrosse teams and excelling in their other sports that they have, and yes, that includes squash. But if somebody wants to donate $100 million to build a hockey arena for Drexel and a hockey team, then I'm all for it.

And after an awesome season in wrestling, it appears our top true freshman got into a spat with the coaching staff and will transfer out and has been given his release. Rumors are Penn State and Iowa are interested. So that will be a huge hit to the program.

All in a season's work for Drexel, where our athletics programs can't have nice things!

Yeah, it helps when you have a billionaire NFL & NHL owner as an alumnus. Drexel, on the academic side, has an uncanny ability to get money for things it wants to get done, it's not like those big donors are just showing up with a huge bag of money. Athletics seems to work on the opposite and are, in fact, waiting for somebody to show up with a big bag of money. I have no doubt that if the school really wanted, say, The Armory project to have succeeded, they'd have been able to secure a donor.

Kid sounds like a spoiled diva:
Quote:“To me it seems like he's looking for the next challenge,” said Exeter coach Jon Rugg, DeSanto's high school coach for four years. “He feels there isn't that competition in the room on a daily basis for him to get better.”"
http://www.readingeagle.com/sports/artic...rom-drexel

Quote:During a quarterfinal loss to Michigan's Steven Micic, DeSanto trailed big late and appeared to lock Micic's arm in a dangerous arm bar. The ending prompted Micic to question if DeSanto knew how to "handle an ass beating."
"He didn't do himself any favors there with his actions," Rugg said. "That's pretty easy to see."

wait for donor with money bag.

wait for fans to line up outside.

wait for wins to start piling up.

winning strategy.

True Drachen, but we also dont tend to have super high ceiling athletes land here either. He is a top talent, his level of challenge to push him further is probably true. However he will likely find out quickly just how difficult big ten wrestling is compared to EIWA. It is no different than a Damion Lee. He can only improve his talents at our level for so long before you stall out. Leaving for a bigger program at the highest level can push you further.

Underpants Gnomes. Or, IIRC, we've described it as chicken and egg. The problem is each side is waiting for the other side to show commitment and nothing changes.

Be the great or follow in the footsteps of the greats. Maybe you see if your coach can bring in better teammates, but we were ranked this year, so his teammates couldn't have been that bad. But if he needs more competitive practices in order to get better and, therefore, not try and break a guy's arm when he's losing a match, probably best for him to move on.

both true and sad, considering drexel pays people to literally commit to these things

Golf finished 3rd at the CAA tournament. According to Drexel, it's the highest they've ever placed. It's something, at least...

RE: Other Sports
Wrestler decided on Iowa. Based on his actions to this point good luck., Hope his attitude changes when he is humbled and realizes he is not the best wrestler out there. Wrestling in our conference is a whole other animal than big ten wrestling.
