Little Rock adding Men's Wrestling
Beginning in 2019
Obviously they won't play in the Sun Belt as App is the only other school in the league to offer it, but with this whole debate about starting football coming, and the knowledge they'd have to add other sports to do it...this is interesting to say the least.

They'll need women's.

They also announced they are adding scholarships on the Women's side as well. No sports though, just scholarships.
It's probably nothing, but still.

It’s a good add for them. Now Someone has to find the 17 million needed to update War Memorial stadium for football. Wrestling is cheaper.

RE: Little Rock adding Men's Wrestling
You can have up to 10 scholarships for wrestling, but can divide them up.
Amazingly, App Wrestling only has 4.5 scholarships and is 3-time defending SoCon Champs and had an NCAA All-American last year. And only had one senior on this past year's team.

If by some chance Little Rock adds football and the Belt goes to 11 teams would we seek to add a new school in the East?

Socon is losing SIU-E in wrestling so there is room there

UALR only awards at the limit for scholarships in men's and women's hoops, volleyball and baseball. If they were to do say 4.5 rides in wrestling like App, they could fund five more rides in other women's sports and improve their scholarship ratio modestly though it won't help the participation numbers.

So with wrestling, adding football will get them to the minimum number of sports for FBS football.

This statement maybe a first. Football is usually the reason wrestling programs get the ax. If you need a sport, it’s going to be a woman’s sport. Also if you just need a sport, the conference already offers championships in men’s soccer and tennis. Wrestling seems like an odd choice to me.

I can't believe Little Rock added wrestling over men's soccer (a cheaper sport that the SBC actually has)

No. UALR wasn't looking to add and already isn't in a great Title IX position. But they have an angel donor willing to fund wrestling. Soccer was not under consideration.
I would not be surprised if UALR ends up dropping men's golf or cross country to balance the gender numbers.

If UALR is the least bit serious, they need to get in as a B12 affiliate. The Big 12 already has Wyoming, AFA, N Colorado, Utah Valley, Fresno St, N Iowa, NDSU and SDSU, so it’s not beyond shooting for. OU, Okie St, Iowa St, and WVU are powers in that sport. The SoCon just added Presbyterian and is mostly private schools.

Boise St dropped wrestling in 2017 but Fresno St added wrestling back.
Little Rock adds wrestling in 2018 but Eastern Michigan drops it.

The best bet for Little Rock is the Big 12, followed by the MAC.

I agree with that. I have been as involved with the LR program as any "average fan" (non-big money booster) for the past 35 years. I am currently President of the booster club. I had no absolutely no clue this was happening.

I would have loved to add men's soccer. Apparently no one stepped up and donated 1.4 million as start-up money for soccer, like they did for wrestling.
