I’d like to see anybody but St. Edwards from NE Ohio so go Bees.

Close but no cigar for the Bees. St Ed’s stays on top (barely) while St Paris Graham is untouchable at DII.

Caleb Brooks finished 3rd at 126 in DII.
Brady Chrisman finished 2nd at 170 in DI.
Stone Day won a title at 195 in DII. He defeated a Graham wrestler after losing to another last year in the final.

Tim Wallace finished 2nd at 182 in Pennsylvania.

RE: Wrestling 2017-2018
Not a bad day for Kent State at the NCAA championships. Tutolo went 1-1 and will wrestle in the consolation bracket tomorrow. Sparkman went 0-2 and is out of the tournament. Conel won his pigtail match and also a 1st and 2nd round match in the championship bracket. If he wins just one of his next two matches he will finish in the top 8 and achieve All-American status. It won’t be easy though as his quarter final match will be against the #1 seed Moore from Ohio St. Suglio was pinned in the first round but won his consolation match (by medical forfeit) and will be wrestling along with Tutolo in the consolation bracket. Overall we were 5-4. This was my first time attending an NCAA final and it was pretty impressive. They will fill up Quicken Loans for all six sessions this weekend (just a bit more than goes to the MAC basketball tournaments 7 sessions). I was late realizing it was Cleveland so I won’t be at the semis and finals Friday night and Saturday but I think 500 matches in a day and a half is plenty. Next year they are in Pittsburgh. Close enough to try it again.

Kyle is the star of the tournament after that win and his interview. The majority of the crowd exploded when he stuck Moore because, other than Buckeye fans, everyone else wanted Moore to lose. I’m being offered congratulations and drinks from PSU, Michigan, and Iowa fans. That was amazing!

Even though Penn State lost their next 2 matches (197 and 285), Conel had the crowd buzzing! Kilgore’s pin against Oklahoma State energized the tournament years ago and everyone loved Ian Miller (scoring debacle and wrestling on 1 leg) at Nationals, but Conel may have exceeded both today.

To recap:

He wasn’t seeded for this tournament
He was not consistently ranked all season
He became a starter mid-way through the season
He quit wrestling for a year
He is the first pigtail to make it this far
He was 40 lbs overweight before he returned to the team
He beat an opponent that crushed him by TF earlier in the season
He defeated the #1 at 197
He pancaked him
He impacted the team race with his upset
He will have 18,000 (minus some Buckeyes) fans in his corner tonight

Credit to Hill and Andrassy for having faith in him. I thought he may AA, but not in my wildest dreams did I foresee this!

Had mixed feelings about this match. So happy for Kyle, & congratulations to him. I have no affinity for OSU, but Moore graduated from the same high school that I went to. Small country high school that doesn't produce many elite athletes.

Anyway, hopefully Kyle keeps moving on. I will be watching.

“Cinderella” story for a wrestler? I’m ok with it!

This brings back fond memories of our NCAA run in 2002 for men’s hoops!

Yes. Coaches left their “box” to hug Conel. It happened over a dozen times this afternoon.

He did it again. Won 5-3. Third place!! He probably kept Ohio St. from winning the tournament.

With 5 in the finals, PSU had it locked up.

He's only the second wrestler in history to beat the first seed twice in one tournament.

I don’t know. Ohio St. is up 6 right now. If they win at HW and 184 to go up by 14. That would force Penn St to win their 4 remaining matches or win 3 with a couple of pins. They could do that but it would be interesting at least. If Martin wins Friday Penn St. would really have had its back to the wall. Today’s match was not as important. Tonight the match at 184 is key. Ohio St must pull the upset.
