RE: John DeFilippo
Looks like DeFilippo, new O-Coord in Minnesota, will be getting Kirk Cousins (and a 3-year fully guaranteed $86M contract). I like Cousins. Really good guy. He's played the system perfectly to his own gain. Can't blame a guy for that. As a Skins fan, I have no problem however with letting him go. There will be a ton of pressure on DeFilippo and Cousins to produce given that kind of cash thrown out there by the Vikes who are obviously in a win-now mode.

They have a lot going for them. Their O-Line is significantly better as they reworked it a year ago during the offseason. They have good skill position guys for Cousins to utilize. And, their D is top 5 in the league - something Cousins never even came close to seeing while wearing burgundy & gold.

Good luck to both of them.

Didn't Connolly move from WR too? I recall that year, and it seems like at some point we had to use a converted WR because there were no more healthy QB's left.

This morning ESPN was discussing if the Vikings would be a 'bust' if they didn't make the super bowl. Enormous pressure for a first year QB and OC. Kirk will be better (better line, better weapons, better atmosphere) but a lot will have to go right on both sides of the ball to live up to the hype if it is "Super Bowl or bust."

He may have moved TO WR after that. I do remember him returning punts in later years.

I believe the plans were to redshirt him, but he was doing a great job as scout QB and there was obviously a need for a QB.

The Super Bowl or bust narrative is a joke for the Vikings in my opinion. They should have lost to the Saints, save for essentially an incredible play by Stefon Diggs. Then they got their @sses handed to them in Philly 38-7. They'll be good, but SB or Bust, C'mon man!

Agreed. They are getting Dalvin Cook back, though it remains to be seen whether he will be 100%. He sure looked good before going down last year. They won their division going 13-3 in the regular season with musical chairs at QB and without Cook. Of course, if we use how a team did the previous year to somehow project what they will do the following year, the Eagles had no chance to win the Super Bowl in 2017 as they finished last in the NFC East with a 7-9 record the previous season. New season. Ton of money thrown at getting Cousins. Expectations sky high in the Twin Cities. Can't really blame 'em.

Well using advanced stats Minnesota, on spreadsheets at least, was the 4th best overall team last year (offense+defense+special teams). This breaks down as the 5th best offense, 2nd best defense and 18th best special teams.

Other 2017-18 nuggets:
They are listed with 12.0 Estimated Wins last year which would have been the second highest after NO at 13.4.
They played the 8th hardest schedule last year.
Minnesota was the 2nd most consistent team in performance last year.

QB comparisons (https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/qb)

Case Keenum
1st in DVOA*
4th in DYAR**
2nd in Passing Plus-Minus***
3rd in QBR****

Kirk Cousins
18th in DVOA*
16th in DYAR**
8th in Passing Plus-Minus***
17th in QBR****

*DVOA, or Defense-adjusted Value Over Average, represents value, per play, over an average quarterback in the same game situations.

**DYAR, or Defense-adjusted Yards Above Replacement, gives the value of the quarterback 's performance compared to replacement level, adjusted for situation and opponent and then translated into yardage.

***Passing plus-minus estimates how many passes a quarterback completed above or below what an average quarterback would have completed, given the location of those passes. Player performance is compared to a historical baseline of how often a pass is completed based on the pass distance, the distance required for a first down, and whether the ball was thrown to the left, middle, or right side of the field.
https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-a...plus-minus

****QBR is a metric created by the ESPN Stats & Information group

Ok Ok, it's only been two games so far which is an awfully small sample size, but Flip's offense in Minnesota is second in the NFC at 411.5 ypg, behind only Tampa (I'll hold off on a Ryan Fitzpatrick chest hair joke for now 03-thumbsup)

If anyone else watched that last 4 mins or whatever it was on the clock in the Vikings/peckers game, someone will try to hire him next season.

I just hope he stays with Zim for long enough to finally deliver a SB win before I die.

It’s only been 48 or so years I’ve been holding on...

Can Bud Grant and Fran come back?!?

Lol

There are a lot of us out here.

As I’ve oft said “long suffering Vikings fan”, since playing helmet football on the cafeteria floor during indoor “recess”. Something like 1974 or so.

But, stilllllll hanging on, this is the year! Favre won’t throw that late pick this time!!!

Skol!

Another Vikes fan here. I starting rootin' in 1969. Joe Kapp was one tough QB. I don't know if DeFillippo would have been able to help Joe back in the day. Joe was unique. More like a linebacker playing QB.
I still have my Tudor electric football set with the Vikes playing the Chiefs in SB IV.

Skol!!!!!

RE: John DeFilippo
There was a difference in opinion in the Vikings coaching structure. The HC wants to ground and pound and do things "old school," but John wants a more modern approach that uses passing to open up the running game. Which is good because the Vikings OL is not that great at run blocking.
