You're still using short-term data and applying it infinitely. WMU made the NY6 game with PJ Fleck, who was making just 800k per year. You really think WMU can do it, but we can't? I'm not buying it. If WMU can, so can ODU.

No brainer for me. I'd rather have basketball as our marquee sport hands down.
I would not support that at all. That would be a big step backwards.
How so? Please explain how the current situation is any better. The grand prize is a weekday bowl game in the Bahamas against Eastern Michigan for Pete's sake. And it is still a 1-bid basketball league.
Because we would then be playing all lower level football programs. No more seasons with multiple ACC teams on the schedule. I would much prefer us to get our basketball house in order in CUSA and dominate the league every year like Memphis used to. Then we can talk about moving up to a better conference, not down to one that used to be good.
News flash. With our leadership, we arent going to compete against the top teams in CUSA.
Nor do we (apparently) have the money to compete in FBS football and still dedicate the needed resources to basketball to be at that level.

You're trying to use short-term data from a team that just transitioned to paint a bleak picture. Way too hyperbolic for my taste.
We compete for a CUSA championship. Winning that would mean more than some CAA title, where they have maybe 3 decent teams per year.
No G5 coach is making 5 mil a year. Chad Morris is the highest paid and doesnt make half that.
And while we may or may not have the right coach for the job right now. That doesnt mean we need cupcakes infinitely to compete.
UCF head coach Josh Heupel will be paid $1.7 million annually over five years, per his Memorandum of Understanding, the same salary amount that Scott Frost was paid during his first year as the Knights' head coach.
https://247sports.com/college/central-fl...-111797904
That's $8.5M tight there with a $10M buyout. We can't compete with that.
I like Bobby Wilder and prefer not to throw good money after bad. He is the perfect guy to compete for national championships in the FCS and SB Ballard at Foreman Field is the perfect stadium to do it from. The games were better, the atmosphere was better, and locals unaffiliated with the school used to talk about ODU football. The experiment failed. Nobody wants to see UTSA and nobody wants to see us lose by 30 to NC State or watch as Virginia Tech takes over our campus. We just can't compete.
What we can do is build a basketball program that can compete. We already have the venue and with much lower travel and football expenses, we can pay a coach the market rate.
We can compete, we just don't have the state support, facilities, coaching and recruiting to do so. I'm convinced with the right leadership and financial investment it could happen. Unfortunately we have neither and the state is working against us in every way to keep it from ever happening. So with that reality, the best situation may be as you describe. But I put the blame for that squarely on state and university leadership. We seem to have a budget large enough to do good things with, but spread it out to non revenue sports at too high of a rate. Theres no other reasons at all why ODU cant be equal in football to UCF, ECU, Marshall, WMU, NIU, Navy etc.

Big step backwards! No thanks to sports schedules full of Fordham, La Salle, Stony Brook, Elon, Maine, Albany, New Hampshire, etc.

Agreed... we can do it. We can't do it in the CAA, however.

The New Hampsire game itself will be better and more fun. In fact, last time they were here for football, it ranked in the top 5 of best athletic events I have ever attended. VT is going to take over our campus and beat us by 30+. They have the fan base depth to buy tickets on stubhub for $500 a pop. A lot of people I have talked to are thinking of getting season tickets this year because they know selling for this single game will pay for them. I even know a die hard Hokies fan buying season tickets. The rest of the games might have a lot of empty seats.

I was there and remember it well, but that was an anomaly. If we're really going to party, then let's get Chowan and Virginia State back on the schedule and move our games over to Powhatan Stadium

The most exciting ODU football games I have attended have been against CAA opponents. Though I missed the La Tech game. I hear that was epic.

But at the end of one, we'll be an embarrassment in our region amongst most football players looking to stay in state (maybe we score a point this time?), just another P5 Bloodbath, a paycheck for Wood to waste, another article in the newspaper detailing our inadequacies. Just dont see how this is helping us all that much right now.
At the end of the other, well
We sold out the stadium and everyone had a great time playing in that conference. What's the real difference. people are less emotionally involved because of the lack of history with our conference opponents. we're paying more to travel and the prospect of having an extra game in another country is not all that attractive, at least to me. Good on you if that's your thing. I would prefer the play off format. It's not like i am going to be any less entertained watching us play and potentially win against UNH versus getting beaten to a bloody pulp by VT. That;'s the entire point of this from our standpoint right? Entertainment? The entertainment we will get from watching our team attempt to play the game of football against VT is going to be COMICAL yet again. if I wanted comedy I would go watch the stooges.

From a scheduling standpoint If you can't understand the difference between playing D1 basketball ,and playing FBS football than I just don't know what to tell you. Let's just start with the post season for example when discussing the differences.....

I even know a die hard Hokies fan buying season tickets. The rest of the games might have a lot of empty seats.
I feel like I'm in a bizzaro world. I can't believe we have people begging to get VT/UVA to the Ted, and then they turn around and would rather have UNH come to SB Ballard instead of the Hokies.
From a scheduling standpoint If you can't understand the difference between playing D1 basketball ,and playing FBS football than I just don't know what to tell you. Let's just start with the post season for example when discussing the differences.....
XACLY. The goal for the football team is to go to a bowl game. That happens with 6 wins, whether they come from UVA and VT or UMass and Eastern Michigan.
