RE: OK, let the speculation begin
I have no particular opposition to Walker other than the Fayetteville connection and the fact that my observation has been that pro coaches more often than not do not translate down to college. But Walker easily could be an exception.

But if someone with big money is (more or less) dictating to Chasse who he is to get as coach, then he might as well hang it up as an AD. Tell me it ain't so.

I agree with you in general and was my reservation about him last time. But the last two years as a college coach seems to have shown that exception.

Big money donors influence athletic directors everywhere. Especially in Fayetteville

Influence is one thing, but dictating is another. If the donor thinks he can dictate, then you are better off without the money.

That is the reality, but I certainly would not want a job under those circumstances.

Whoops. I was about to check out Mark Fox on Wikipedia. Definitely someone we should consider if a retread is a possibility.

Take him in a heartbeat if we could, but I don't think he will fall this far.

My guess is that Chasse is a lot more likely to be 2 out of 3 than 1 out of 3.

RE: OK, let the speculation begin
Here is what CBS said about our opening;

Out: Wes Flanigan. This was a surprising one. Little Rock won an NCAA Tournament game just two years ago under Chris Beard. Flanigan got the job, dealt with some adversity, but is out only two years later. Flanigan went 22-42.

"I am appreciative to coach Flanigan for his service to the university and our basketball program," school AD Chasse Conque said. "At the conclusion of each season I evaluate each of our programs. Based on where we stand today, we felt our men's basketball program needed a change in leadership."

There are 75 schools in the Power Five conferences plus the Big East. Multiply by three assistants each, and that is 225 possibilities just going that route.

OK, I'll throw this name out. Not likely, but interesting.

Mike Davis at Texas Southern.
He has been at UAB and Indiana, and now he has Texas Southern back in the NCAA.

Incidentally, Northridge just hired Mark Gottfried, so there is another big name who is no longer available.

I actually wondered about Mike Davis when I heard he took Texas Southern to the NCAA tournament yesterday. In the end, it may well be someone we never heard of, just like 3 years ago (i.e. Coach Beard). Personally, I have a hard time believing we'll find a better match then Darrell Walker. I obviously don't know him personally, but he seems to be well-liked by everyone who knows him. His wife and grand children live in Little Rock, and he obviously loves it here. He was a hog star and a long-time NBA player. He has coached in the NBA. He is now a successful college coach. He went and finished his college degree so he could be a college coach. He sounds like he has been emphasizing academics with his players at Clark University. At 57, this might really be his "dream job" in the sense that he would be happy to coach here until he retires with no aspirations to move to the "big time". Of course, if Derek Fisher wants this job, Darrell could once again lose out to an Arkansas born and bred hero.

RE: OK, let the speculation begin
Fish has picked up some negative off-court publicity in the last few years that may have hurt his profile. The main rub against Walker will be that he has no D1 coaching experience. But since he has coached above and below that level, that may not matter.

One place you might find hidden gems is among the assistants of a fired coach. There is only so much an assistant can do to positively affect the program. The HC pushes the buttons. But there probably is prejudice against those guys because they were not "winners."
