Monarx. The answer. MONEY TALKS. You want the NCAA to worry about fairness? Come on my friend. Money talks in America. Look at Oklahoma getting in NCAA. They finished the season winning 4 of their last 15 games.(lost to good teams though) BUT, they have a superstar who will be great for TV ! More viewers = MONEY.

I guess we could technically have a conversation about ODU being at-large worthy, but it would be a short one.

MTSU was good enough to get snubbed. I'd settle for that right now.

Its pretty clear that until the committee changes their mindset, there is nothing we can do to get in the tourney without winning the tourney. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't MTSU have something like a top 10 non conference strength of schedule? And the committee didn't even put them in the first 4 out and they got a 3 see in the NIT...there were nowhere close to the NCAA tourney despite playing Belmont, Auburn, USC, Miami, Murray State, FGC, Vadny, Ole Miss, Princeton.

On the road a lot this morning listening to a multitude of radio shows - every single one of them multiple times essential say the same thing and it’s onky going to get worse with how the bigger schools are going to limit their schedules in the near future minimizing the opportunity for Mids to scheduled bigger profile games. So as it’s been for the history of our school - We are a 1 bid league ( the only exception of a few years in the CAA) where one big win made a difference in an also down year across all of college basketball. So when you enjoy the game of basketball and more importantly your alma mater ... accepting what is commonly referred to as mediocrity is about all you get until a 3 game weekend .

That may or may not be the case.

But ODU Basketball is quite a long way from having to worry about that. We need to get better and schedule up. Then we can worry about getting snubbed.

Having to worry about 3 games in March ?? At large is going to be more limited once the majors expand their conference schedule ..

That may well be the case.

But we should at least have a tough enough schedule to where 25 wins gets you an NIT bid.

The at large stuff is not even my concern. I know the reality of what happens with the committee and P5 and G5. I want the games for exposure for recruits, as well as getting to play on a big stage. For me, it has little to do with the at large conversation, but more about the experience of playing in big time games.

I'm sad to say that when I opened the ODU page on the Pilot website today and saw Jones' picture, I thought..."he's been fired!" I hate being stuck in this purgatory...neither good enough to get into the NCAA's, nor bad enough to fire the coach. This is like the Navy's bread and water punishment. It keeps you alive, but you wonder what's the point.

Look I know it falls on the coach for not getting over the hump. But this year we just flat out couldnt shoot. And that came up when it mattered most. If you watched the games this year. We were a terrible jump shooting team.

In the final game against WKU, JJ didnt shoot 1-13 from 3 and 10-20 from the line. Get the shooters in there. We need more MJH and Godwin. I really think a full offseason will do wonders for both.

It was JJ's decision not to put Godwin or Hueitt in the game when we could have used their scoring ability. He wasted their redshirt and hardly played them.

We shot 36% from 3 this year; 38% in conference. We shot 33% on 2 point jumpers. I'm not sure how it is accurate to say we coudn't shoot.

This is the biggest problem I had. Why in the world would you burn MHJ's redshirt year if you weren't going to play him? The only way I see this from JJ's side is if he promised MHJ that he would not redshirt his freshman year. If that is not the case, there isn't much people can say to me to make believe that this was not one of the dumbest decisions I have seen from a head coach. A kid that is too skinny and has a lot of work to do on the defensive end...it makes perfect sense to redshirt that guy. Incredible stuff by Jeff.

We finished as a top 100 team with 25 wins and a second place finish in the league. That is definitely a positive. But these two things do not out weight the negatives therefore making this year more of a failure than a success. We lost to every team that had a higher RPI than us, we bowed out of the tourney early again, we not only missed the NCAA tourney, but missed out on the NIT. When we are only good enough to make a C tournament, then the facts say we aren't as successful as many of you claim we are. You throw in the fact the team looked very unprepared for the "big" games and our two most promising freshmen had their red shirts burned just to average 2-3 min in the games that they were allowed to play in. I just don't see enough for us to be defending the coaching staff. This isn't just on Jeff Jones, he has a full cast supporting him and if THEY cannot as a whole fix the issues, develop players into consistent playmakers, and prepare our guys for each and every game. Than what is the legitimate next step?

Well said.

Reminiscent of Coop's freshman year.

Real coaches do not take nearly this long to make an impact.

If you have the money for the buyout, feel free to call up Wood and demand he let Jones go. Money talks......... and since I doubt you have the money to do so, stop with the “we need to take our medicine now” bull.

Mind naming those coaches who inherited a crappy program and turned it into a NCAA tourney team quickly. And don’t name any P5 teams, because if anything was evident yesterday (during the selection show) if you’re a P5 you can be hot garbage and still get in to the dance

Dan D'Antoni

Do you think Dan D'Antoni would have made it this long if he had a .500 record and sub 150 teams for 3 years? IF you think the heat is on Jones now, what would the heat have been on D'Antoni? Do you think luckboxing an NCAA tourney appeareance would have eased the heat? (I'm not sure, genuinly asking)

Different scenario. ODU wins 20 games most years by itself.

He may well have asked him to redshirt. Ultimately, it is the player's decision and he could have had the attitude that he would work his way into the rotation, which obviously didn't happen. Both of them had a wasted year, just difficult to say if it was Jones's fault. It is quite unbelievable neither of them saw minute in that last game where Porter spend half the game on the bench and we were 1-13 from 3.

Let me clarify. We couldn't shoot vs teams that were better than us. I dont care if we shot 85% against UTEP. I care about the games we lost to better teams, so look at those numbers:

Temple: Shooting % overall - 40.3% 3P% - 26.3% FT% - 58.8%
W&M: Shooting % overall - 61.1% 3P% - 35.0% FT% - 28.6%
VCU: Shooting % overall - 50% 3P% - 41.7% FT% - 85.7%
WKU #1: Shooting % overall - 38.8% 3P% - 28.6% FT% - 75%
MTSU: Shooting % overall - 36.8% 3P% - 20% FT% - 75%
WKU #2: Shooting % overall - 43.8% 3P% - 36% FT% - 50%
WKU #3: Shooting % overall - 36.5% 3P% - 7.7% FT% - 50%

We were capable of beating all of those teams, we didnt have any Kansas', Duke's or Michigan States' on the schedule. If we did I would concede that it would be a long shot to beat those teams, but we didnt. We shot terrible except for W&M and VCU and we could not stop either of them from shooting better than us. JJ deserves some blame, but he didnt contribute to shooting 7.7%04-jawdrop with the season on the line.

757, an article about a month ago addressed the Hueitt red-shirt business and it mentioned that there was no interest from Hueitt in doing that. Not sure what you do in that case. Its a dang shame.

Good point. Xavier Green knew he needed to redshirt. It is a shame.

I initially thought Oklahoma was about money, but the more I think about it, how much of a ratings bump are they going to get from one game at noon on a weekday? I think it is all about their crazy litigious mindset that makes them want to have a legally defensible method to prove how fair it is, and that is just par for the course in the current mindset around academia.

So is it that Jones refuses to play freshman or is it he has a level of play he deems acceptable before you can get into a game?

How many times will we be seeing Tre Young highlights this week? Close to 14 zillion I predict.

I am with you on the breaking away. I think it would be a very good thing for the non p5 leagues if the p5 decided to break away, as long as the non p5 stuck to its guns and refused to participate in their basketball league. I think there is a market for true collegiate athletics at the D1 level.
