2018-2019 MBB Schedule
We know we will be in the Paradise Jam with:

Kansas State
Missouri
Oregon State
Northern Iowa
Penn
EKU
Kennessaw State

Im guessing VCU is on the schedule next year also.

Who else?

RE: 2018-2019 MBB Schedule
Are we actively filling in with the UMES's and Norfolk States of the world? I really hope we are scheduling some good Mid-Major teams or some road ACC or Big 10 games.

JMU has a return game (we had a 2 for 1 with them).

RE: 2018-2019 MBB Schedule
The article last week said we are holding open one last date in hopes to convince a team like you want to play us. Not happening so far at least.

Im all for playing road ACC, Big East, SEC, P-12, Big 12, Big 10 games with no return.

I would also do an AAC 2 for 1

And home and homes with Sun Belt, A-10, MAC, MWC.

C-USA and all Mid-Majors (G5) need to stop scheduling the UMES, Fairfield, Norfolk St, and JMUs. There is no point to scheduling an opponent of a guaranteed 1-bid league (low major). ODU should be scheduling aggressively because this what you get with a cupcake schedule

RE: 2018-2019 MBB Schedule
So we have Paradise Jam x3
Richmond (away) - will struggle to be top 100
VCU (home) - will struggle to be top 100
Fairfield (home) - probably around 200
Bowling Green (away) - probably around 200
W&M (home) - will struggle to be top 100
JMU (home) - probably in the 250 range
St. Joe's (away) - rebuilding, not likely to be good
MEAC/buy game - sub 300
Holdout spot mentioned earlier

No reason that holdout spot can't be a road game against a P5. We are in the same spot we were in this year whereas if we don't win our first game in the Paradise Jam (probably Oregon state or Norther Iowa in a 4/5, we will be on the weak side of the bracket and wind up with Kennesaw State and EKU. If we win that game, the 1 seed is probably Missouri and we'll get them. Tough to put your entire season on the first game. At least a road P5 game give the kids another opportunity.

ODU is never getting in unless they win the conference tourney. It's time to concede the point and make the best financial decisions (with consideration for recruiting). Trying to pump up an RPI doesn't work for this level.

I would only do a 2-1 with Cincy or Houston in the AAC. 1-1 for everyone else.

Could be. I wouldn't have thought they'd buy a game or we'd travel all the way there without a return, but it is possible.

It was a filler. I am pretty certain that was a one game deal. We had to scramble to get someone on the schedule and we were left with them.

Got it. What about Bowling Green and Towson?

Not even them, unless Cincy becomes a regular top-15 program. If ODU wants to be in the AAC someday (I presume they do; certainly most of us want them to), they can't put their schools on a pedestal.

Better than playing UMES.

Not going to happen. Tomato cans are an important part of almost every program's scheduling diet. They give lesser programs a home date and a winnable game, and stronger programs the opportunity to give their bench guys some run and an opportunity to road-test different schemes.

The best thing ODU can do to improve their at-large chances is to be in a better conference, whether that involves moving to the A-10 or AAC, doing their part to make CUSA a viable multi-bid conference, or helping to create a better conference out of whole cloth. Because if this year has taught us anything, it's that you are judged by the company you keep more than what you do with them. I'm not even a big mid-major conspiracy guy, but Middle Tennessee and St. Mary's are an object lesson in the abject unfairness of the system as it stands today.

At least MTSU did try and they got nothing from it. St Marys actually turned down some P-5 schools. MTSU worked with the premise that playing good teams on the road would help.

Yeah, Middle Tennessee gets more sympathy than St. Mary's because they latter refused/bought out games with some decent programs for whatever reason. Even so, I think their body of work was good enough to get them in.

Which illustrates the problem: There's no magic formula for getting into the dance from a mid-major conference. Bulk up with wins, not good enough. Get a respectable RPI and record with a tougher OOC schedule, not good enough. Short of going unbeaten or getting 12 games against power-conference teams, there's little a program can do to prove their mettle.

By contrast, the Big 12 was Oklahoma's water wings; take them away and they drown in their slump.
