Houston was a tough opponent, but had the officiating crew called fouls on even just their more egregious offenses such as when Jenifer caught an elbow to the face (Flagrant 1) or some of the holding that was going on when they were on defense, this might not have been that close. When their guys started finally racking up fouls, our offense at least started to get looks.
The fourth foul on Cumberland was one of the worst I've ever seen.
Yup. That doesn't take into account some of the ticky-tack fouls that we were getting. They called one or two on Houston, but that was about it.
Sampson can't really complain about officiating. The officials may as well have rolled out a red carpet to the trophy for Houston today but it wasn't quite enough.
Also, still of concern is UC's FT shooting. We would have put it away earlier with a few makes.

I am SO jealous of today's UC students.
I’m not. I got to experience the glorious Tony Yates years.
So did I. Though when Broome occasionally throws that telegraphed slow pass, I have ugly flashbacks.

Horrible officiating. Bunches of missed calls then Tons of phantom calls both ways. I think guys were confused on how to play. However, Zanna fouled the **** out of Gary Clark, wasn’t even close.

Coach Cronin and the Bearcats; you've made us all very proud this season. What a great day yesterday!
As a footnote, I thought the CBS post-game coverage and awards presentation was just outstanding for our program. The nation got to see talented, humble and well spoken student athletes with CINCINNATI on their jerseys. You can't buy advertising any better than that with millions watching.
Unfortunately, I found the local early newscasts failed to capitalize on that feel good event. Simply amazing when the home team wins its first conference tourney in 14 years. Add to that the city is starved for a winner. Go figure.
Local media will be scrambling to catch up when UC begins writing some tournament history on the national stage Friday. Go 'Cats!

Who cares? The average age for cable news viewership is ~50. I would bet local news follows that trend. Cincinnati's win was already all over social media, and sports news sites. Local news is pretty meaningless.

Watching the game for the first time.
First half:
We started out weird on O, making an effort to post up smaller guards and spread their D with Clark/Washington on the perimeter. First four or so plays, Evans post-up, Clark 3, Cumberland post-up, Clark 3.
Scott with a pretty turn around jumper from the FT line, too bad it didn't count. Though he might be suffering from what Cronin calls being a big who wants to shoot 3's. Scott needs to develop an inside game first.
Gray ran Moore over and no call, that was a clear charge.
Cumberland lost his man twice in a row trying to over help and gave up two open threes.
We made almost no effort to post-up Clark or Washington, not really sure why as both Houston bigs got early fouls and a second foul on one or both of them would have cause them problems. Gary dominating on the glass though.
Broome turned back into Broome from earlier in the year, comes in and commits dumb turnovers.

I think that was a concerted effort by Mick and staff to take advantage of the massive height difference we had in the back court. Evans and Cumberland both have almost half a foot on their respective defenders, and pulling the bigs out of the key did two things, it allowed us to get some good ORebs and second chance points, and tire out their guards who aren't used to playing down low. They were missing almost all of their shots short in the second half, so they definitely tired them out.

I notice a trend that every time someone brings up the local media you say it doesn't matter. You are a young guy. Like a lot of young people you don't understand that there is a sizeable portion of the paying class* of the fan base who still rely on local media for their information. This includes the local TV, radio and newspaper. You can't keep dismissing this, especially in this town.
* By that I mean this portion of the fan base is the one who are donating the lion's share of money to the university/athletic department, buying season tickets, etc. It is very important for these people to be bought in completely by receiving positive press.

Every second half foul on Cumberland was at best questionable and at worst terrible. He also took an elbow to the face that the refs didn't review, but could have been a flagrant 1.
Evans looked good in the first half shooting mid-range jumpers and following misses. Second half Evans caouldn't get anything to fall, not even FT's.
Second half our defensive rebounding was not very good.
Our D wasn't that much better in the 2nd half (though it was excellent), Houston just stopped hitting tough shots.
Refs seemed to be on Houston's side in the 2nd half.

Jacob Evans disappeared like a fart in the wind in the second half, missing a number of open shots and most of his freethrows. Perhaps he was tired? I mean, he played a complete 40 minutes. Regardless, we persevered and won. I was thrilled to be in attendance at our first conference tournament title in so many years.
We really need Evans to show up in the NCAA tournament, though.

Good analysis. That game was definitely a case of liking the sausage better than enjoying watching it being made. The euphoria for players, coaches and fans was in part because the program took a big step up; breaking through a glass ceiling to win a conference championship tournament.
I think being challenged--and behind in all three games this past weekend, really strengthened this team's resolve to win at all costs. Tournament games by their very nature are boxing matches. Georgia State will throw some early punches with mind numbing 3's or other unlikely plays. UC will weather the storm.

I was really upset with Evans in the second half, and wondered why Mick left him in. Then I started watching him closely on defense, and no matter how bad Evans was on offense, his second half defense was stellar.
