Minnesota Basketball - Why the Tubby Smith Era Should Come to an Abrupt End.

Minny made a panic decision...Dick Pitino just took them 8-23...I bet they wouldn't mind Tubby coming back with Austin and Andre Hollins, beating UCLA in the NCAAs.

That's like saying Kentucky would've wanted Tubby back after Gillispie. Nope. They hired someone else.

“I think the big problem that people had here, was that while he brought the program back to respectability it never matched the great expectations that people had,” Rand said. “The win over UCLA on Friday night was the first NCAA Tournament win of his entire tenure in six years here. He never finished above .500 in Big Ten, never had a Top 5 finish in the Big Ten. There’s probably a 70/30 split here right now with the 70 percent being happy with this move.”

By the way, why are you talking about Pitino Jr.? He was a worse hire than Tubby for Minnesota. But it doesn't change the fact Tubby is a bad hire for Memphis.

what you quoted had noting to do with what I said, and my point is the Minny folks have been making bad hoops decisions lately...firing Tubby was one of those bad decisions, and it's worked to our advantage.

Many tried to blame his poor recruiting at Texas Tech on being located in Lubbock. But that does not hold water for his poor recruiting at Minnesota. Being in the largest Metro area in the state cannot be used as an excuse for poor recruiting. Especially since Minnesota knocked down a top 25 recruiting class for 2016

Never finished higher than 6th in conference after leaving UK.

Uh, he came into Memphis got Andre and Austin Hollins...moreover playing in the AAC is nothing compared to the B1G or Big XII

Sounds like you're mad Pastner's not here anymore...go be a GT fan if that's what you want.

Where were these arguments when Pastner was running our recruiting in the ground? You're all about recruiting rankings now?

Since 1975 (modern era of college hoops), Minnesota has a 44% winning record in the B10. If you exclude the vacated seasons from their scandals, they have a 33% record in the B10. Tubby had a 43% record there. Heck, Clem was cheating and he was their best coach in the history of the program - and he only won 46%.

To set the bar at 50% in the B10 for Minnesota is ridiculous. They've had 2 seasons in the last 20 years above 50%.

They've made 7 NCAA tourneys that were not vacated. Tubby has 3 of those. Haskins was their most successful coach. (Of course, that ended with his 7 year show cause.) After Clem, Tubby is the only one to have any success there.

Tubby made the NCAA tournament three times in all of his years at Minnesota, after having been declared a top tier coach and a "home run" hire by the national sports media--and how much he was under-appreciated as the great coach he was at Kentucky.

In two of the three NCAA tournaments he took Minnesota to, he lost in the first game. He had very good talent at Minnesota and couldn't win more than 4 out of 10 games in the Big Ten? And he only won two NCAA games in his entire time there? And both of those wins were in ONE tournament season? That's supposed to be considered as a great coaching job?

Compare it to Pastner's NCAA tourney record at Memphis. He went to the NCAA tourney four times. How many times did Pastner lose in the first round of the NCAA Tourney?

And I agree Pastner was not a good coach. So, why should I agree that Tubby is? He lost two-thirds of his first round games.

Sure is interesting to see things change and stay the same, right?

My thoughts about Tubby haven't changed.

AND

Penny might be the best hire to replace Tubby (and would certainly be a better choice than keeping the Tubster)

BUT

There is NO reason NOT to take time making sure there's not a better hire available than an unknown.

AND

There is no rush to have to make a quick move.

SO

The smartest thing Memphis could do, is to TAKE TIME making a decision, wait until the NCAAs are done, then make sure there's no option better than Penny, and then hire Penny if there isn't.

This thread is hilarious to read through, joking about losing to ECU and USF and Tubby manage both this season, lol.

How dare you use one of my old posts!! Lol. I was dead wrong. And will admit it. Unlike many folks around here that still think the young coach k to be is the 2nd coming even now, after he’s made a wreck of Joja tech. Worst season I can ever remember tech having.

Those who insisted he would fail miserably as a recruiter and sink the talent level were totally vindicated.

It happened.
