Great idea 82H. Let this be a place in which we gather to adorn the past with glory and drop shade (politely) if we must.

I'm locking the other thread up. Yes, that is how freedom dies lady and gentlemen Seahawks.

The quality of the CAA in the mid 2000's will never fully be appreciated. I would highly recommend "Cinderella: Inside the Rise of Mid-Major College Basketball" by Michael Litos if you want a refresher on how good the CAA was back then.

Agree. In all the debate about year after Brownell left Vs now, that was severely underestimated as well. VCU, Mason, and ODU were always dogfights.

Good point. Ms Cottonball doesn't post here anymore, so the torch must have been passed to someone else.

The CAA was never better than it was in that 2005-06 season. Four teams with 25+ wins, with tremendous postseason success. Not even the mid-80s CAA with David Robinson topped that.

It's a travesty that we were saddled with facing a 26-2 team in our first round game despite being a 9-seed. We should have been a Sweet 16 squad that year.

I'll never understand why the NCAA thinks its reasonable to "punish" a team with a lower seed just because one of its top players is hurt (like they did with GW and Pops Mensah-Bonsu, who ended up playing anyways). Their seeding should be based on their body of work over the course of the season and nothing else.

Even still, we had them beat and blew it!

I know I'm biased, but I don't view it that way. I was at the game. That was more of a GW comeback than a UNCW chokejob. We weren't the type of team to choke away leads all season long, so the track record doesn't back that up either.

GW started full-court pressing, using their length and athleticism. They had 2 NBA prospects on their roster (Pinnock and Mensah-Bonsu) and it showed in that 2nd half and overtime.

We weren't built to handle a press like that. Goldsberry was an awesome point guard, but primarily because he maximized the talent he had. If he was a superior talent, he wouldn't have been here. Same with guys like Beckham Wyrick, Mitch Laue and others on that roster. They were football players in basketball bodies. We didn't have even, say, a Jordon Talley, who has a Houdini-like ability to dribble out of a fullcourt press. And we didn't have a counterpunch to offer GW other than to continue trying to play our game and win the halfcourt battles.

I don't label that loss a chokejob at all. We did the absolute best we could with what we had. I was super sad after that game, but I didn't hang my head. The boys did us proud all season, and it didn't stop with that game.

I was always a huge fan of Vlad, although many didn't think he was that good of a player. He was strong in the post and a fantastic passer. In that GW game we were feeding him in the post and they had no answer. When they began to ratchet up the defense, we stopped going to Vlad and instead settled for jumpers. That was how we lost.

I don't think it was a chokejob either. But to me the biggest issue was TJ Carter running out of gas.

Vlad was young then too, only a Sophomore. You could see his huge potential even then.

Agreed. He wasn't yet the dominant force he'd become in his Senior season, either. The process of passing the torch from Goldsberry to Carter had begun earlier that season, but he wasn't maximizing his full potential just yet. He had to buy into the system and improve his defense before that could happen, which always takes a little time. He put everything he had into that game.

Could you imagine if we could have kept Brownell around to coach TJ and Vlad for the remainder of their UNCW careers, plus whoever else he'd have added to the program? My word....

Lol. This is another example of why I don’t like working night shifts. “Ladies” and I have no idea how many ladies there are. I don’t keep track of those metrics. But yes, by all accounts Ms. Cottonball seems to have left some time ago.

I was there too, about 5 rows behind the bench, we blew it! We had an 18 point lead. They adjusted, we didn’t. Very similar to the UVA game last year

You just set your mind on something and don't even think to be flexible in your viewpoints sometimes.

You're a coach....What adjustments would you have made? Perhaps you can convince me we blew it. Just saying we had a lead and lost it doesn't suffice as a chokejob.

Rodney Terry's Fresno State team is sporting a 21-9 record and 11-6 conference record. Good enough for third place behind Nevada and Boise State. He has won 20 or more games in 4 of his last 5 seasons. His salary is $500,000+. Two of assistant coaches are Jerry Wainright and Byron Jones.
