Agreed. Why jump when it looks like things are finally starting to come together? The top of the conference is strong in basketball, and some of the bottom teams have made improvements. Especially UTSA and North Texas. According to Harry, conference re alignment killed attendance, than why do it again? Give these rivalries time to form.

Conference realignment killed attendance because of whom we realigned with. Our students and alumni don't know most of the teams in our conference...even the good ones. Realigning with our regional/historical rivals, i.e. VCU, GMU, Richmond, etc. would SOLVE problems...not create them.

Aim High... AAC or Bust!!!

The problem with the AAC is that the next wave of realignment (circa 2024) will probably kill that conference too. Again, from the Sun Belt board thread, Texas and Oklahoma (and 1-2 others) most likely move from the Big 12. The Big 12 backfills with Cincy, Memphis, Houston and 1-2 of the Florida AAC schools. At that point, UCONN is screwed and goes independent in FB and to the Big East in all other sports.

With all of those schools out of the AAC, why would we want to join? We would be right back where we are. To me, a better option would be a new FB conference and all other sports in the A10. Option #2 would be to get ODU, Empty Sue, WKU, Marshall, UAB and Charlotte to serve as the core of a new conference of 9-10 teams. Add in Appy, GSU, gSU and/or Liberty/JMU and call it a day.

Yes, for basketball. Not at all for football, which was the focus of the decline in attendance article...

This is true. But to me, the bigger opportunity to make a splash is in basketball. The deck is too stacked against teams at our level in football. We'll never be truly big league.

The A10 isn't the same without Butler, Temple and Xavier.

There are 7 Catholics in the A10 and a Big East Conference with only 10 members.

La Salle is rumored to exit the A10 for the MAAC.

VCU is an ordinary mid major program once again. A potential RPI Killer.

GMU and Richmond are no longer marquee matchups.

No thanks. I like CUSA now that the F_U's are getting their football house in order.

If UCONN goes independent we should try to take UCONN's spot in the AAC.

This. Best case scenario.

Agreed, but if just UConn leaves, I doubt if the AAC backfills. They'll need to lose UConn, Cincy, Houston and/or Memphis for us to have a chance. And our facilities will need to be up to snuff to be considered.

These are fair points, but I still much prefer VCU, GMU, GW, Richmond, Dayton, St. Bonnies, UMass to what we have in CUSA, no disrespect intended to those guys. Its just that we have more in common and draw students from the areas those schools reside in. Plus, the games are on actual TV and it makes sense for them to be on regional TV. You get press in the WaPo and RTD which is much more beneficial to us, AND the tournament is in a reasonable location and well attended. PLUS, its a multi bid league most years.

We will not ever be able to compete with the Alabamas, Notre Dames of the football world. We are struggling mightily to keep up with the MTSU, WKU, FAUs and UNTs of the football world. We don't seem to have the finances or ability to keep up with the conference facilities wise in football or coaching salaries. I truly see no difference between playing those teams or UMass, Charlotte, App St in football. The payoff is in basketball, where we actually have a chance to compete on a national level. Go for it.

Yeah, if UCONN leaves before that point we should join. Otherwise it's pointless but that will also leave schools like ECU & Temple orphans so it would be a good time to pull them into a new east coast FBS conference

They'd stand pat if they lost two schools, but if it's just UConn, then 11 is a weird number and they'd probably try to get back to 12 fairly quickly. Problem is, there's plenty of schools that can and will make cases for inclusion.

Sorry, call me as indifferent. But I see no difference in basketball as it sits right now. MTSU, WKU, Marshall, and ODU make up the top 4. Outside of VCU, Richmond, and UMass I don't really know much or care about the rest. I guess RI, St. Bonnie, Davidison are good but it's no different in dynamic or makeup to CUSA is it? Less travel I guess w/ TX schools gone?

Shrug. I'm happy where we are.

Same here, especially right now.

CUSA also helps, on some level, to spread the ODU brand, at least a little. There are 4 cities in Texas that actually know something about ODU now.

CUSA will never be a good basketball conference. Yes, WKU, MT, UAB and Marshall and ODU may be good to very good. La Tech and El Paso my improve but the other teams are and will forever be RPI killers. Plus I do not want to be in a conference where two thirds of the teams are in another time zone. One is in a two hour different one!!

If I were in charge of the world we'd be out of CUSA tomorrow! I'd even go back to FBS and the CAA. It sure feels like we are in a Div 1A scenario anyway. We will never, ever go to a big time bowl. Wouldn't surprise me if the P5 get their way and only P5 teams will go to the Big Dance and a different bowl system is created that will make we poor hangers-on, red haired step-children fight for the even more meager bowl crumbs.

Give me a TRUE playoff/championship football system! Much better than scrambling to find reasonably priced lodging and transportation at the last minute plus being at the most expensive time of the year to fly just to go to a third or fourth rate bowl game against MAC team!

RE: ODU to A10?!?
There's definitely a stronger case for sticking it out with CUSA than there's been in some time — this year has shown us what's possible in the prestige sports, even with Southern Miss/Marshall football and Charlotte/UTEP men's basketball not living up to their legacies. It also helps that the A-10 is down outside of Rhode Island and St. Bonaventure.

But to be a devil's advocate, the A-10 has a much better TV contract than CUSA. ODU-Fordham doesn't get my juices flowing but it may get on a TV channel that I've heard of.

Then to be a devil's devil's advocate, the contract that was signed in 2012 (when Butler and Xavier were still in) will expire in 2020. Will the next deal put them in BeIN/Stadium purgatory?

More NCAA money, more television, more access to the NCAA tournament, less travel expense, less time out of class for our students, more fan and student interest in the games, greater access to the conference tournament, and more publicity in areas important to ODUs strategic growth. We will likely never draw more than single digits of students from Texas, Mississippi or Florida, whereas Richmond, NoVa, DC, Maryland, Pa, NJ, NC are prime areas where ODU is and should be recruiting students and athletes.

Maybe a little more, but not as bad as CUSA. I think it will put them in MASN/CBSSports/ELEVEN territory. And even if it did put the A10 on BeIn and Stadium. Those are the BEST options for a few CUSA games. So their worst is still equal to the best we've got now.

RE: ODU to A10?!?
Who feels like this "fbs" football is really worth it?

i personally just don't see it for us. Spending all kinds money to construct a new stadium to host the likes of this conference and the annual P5 beatings...and like it was said before, all for the chance at a game against a mac team in the bahamas. Yes some of these FCS to FBS schools are going to be successful, and some have blown past us. our leadership is clearly not "fbs" caliber and i highly doubt they will take us anywhere close to what most of us expect in the future, AAC, NY6 bowl , etc. Aint happening.

ODU has had football at any level for less than 10 years and has been in CUSA for five. It's way too soon to be throwing words like never around as if ODU's fates are settled science.

How long is it supposed to take for a start-up program to reach a major bowl? Did ODU already blow deadline? Sure, neither they nor anyone in CUSA are especially likely to make a big bowl without a ton of breaks going their way, but if Western Michigan and Northern Illinois can do it from the MAC, then why can't ODU or anyone else do it from CUSA?

As for "CUSA will never be a good basketball conference": Why on Earth would they not? ODU, WKU, Middle Tennessee, UAB, Marshall and Louisiana Tech are generally consistent programs. Charlotte and UTEP are in the dumps but have a heritage and that loads the dice in their favor if they get the rights pieces of the puzzle placed. Southern Miss has been good before and can be good again. North Texas is showing signs. Even UTSA and their high-school gym are competitive. There is absolutely no reason that CUSA can't be a regular multi-bid conference with the programs they have, and there's absolutely no reason they can't be better than the CAA as a matter of course.

Sure, ODU could drop back to FCS and the CAA. But just remember that for every game against JMU and Richmond football, there's going to be three against Maine, Rhode Island and Elon. Trade in those Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky basketball games for, among others, Elon and Drexel. And you think CUSA's TV contract is bad? CAA games might as well be available exclusively on VHS at Blockbuster.

Unless the CAA can provide ODU with a time machine with their membership, a diamond-plated pass on going back.

Someone thinks ODU needs a new stadium before there will be any continued growth in football, regardless of conference.
