Two things at play:

1. better tv presentation makes it easier, cheaper, and sometimes better to watch from home

2. There are 130+/- FBS schools. Of those, there are only 66 teams in a power conference. Of those 66 teams, only about 15-20 will ever make the CFP. Of those 15-20 teams, if your team loses more than once, you're out. Fans are starting to realize this which leads to loss of interest as the season progresses.

Do away with Tuesday and Thursday night games that kill attendance. Realign conferences for a better geographical fit, creating more natural rivalries that excite the local fan and allow opposing fans to travel more.

Meaningless table. Let me see the long-term trends. It would be like fretting over the losses in the stock market after it's made huge gains.

Also, it looks like the SEC and ACC are taking a big chunk of the losses. It shouldn't be surprising in the SEC considering how down a lot of the major programs are.

Tuesday and Wednesday night games are dumb. I definitely agree they should be taken away altogether. I don't absolutely hate Thursday night games, but with NFL on Thursday nights it makes them less attractive. It'll never happen because ESPN doesn't care about attendance. Attendance helps the school's bottom line, not ESPN's. Until the schools make a stand then Thursday night games will persist. I could just see ESPN saying "you don't agree to Thursday night games then you don't get any games" type thing and that's never good.

ESPN is losing power in this age of ever increasing technology. With all the streaming options, we don't need ESPN. It's time to stand our ground and end those midweek games. The MAC goes the whole month of November with no Saturday games, and that's just dumb. ESPN owns our games, yet doesn't air the big home OOC games, stAte-Mizzou was not aired, I don't think App-Miami was aired, why would this be??? There has to be a reason why they don't air our premier OOC home games.

Its a combination of things. College football does not have anyone looking out for the good of the whole.

This is the truth, which is why there is always unrest. Always schools throwing other schools under the bus and politicking to position themselves above another school. The NCAA has very little leadership power at this point. The conferences are fighting with each other, which is why we have these over inflated conferences. Everyone is speculating on the future while no one is actually guiding the ship.

And that is why ND is a partial football member of the ACC, WV is in the Big 12, Mizzou is in the east of the SEC and why the Big East stopped existing as an FBS conference. Had these conference leaders been brought together with the NCAA, we would of had controlled changes with an end game in mind, instead, the conference leaders are just waiting for someone to blink so the land grab can start again.

Agree with AppManDG...disturbing. AD's and conference commissioners across the country are also disturbed by this trend. This is the eighth straight year attendance has dropped. To add to their angst, 2018 tax reform has eliminated entirely tax deduction credit for donations associated with ticket purchase rights. Now the donations might as well be part of the ticket face value. The most disturbing quote in the article is the one about college students no longer seeing attending games as part of the college experience. There have even been articles about this change with students for football at Alabama and basketball at Kentucky. And, Penn State shrinking the size of its stadium!

Going back to 1985 isn't long term enough?

Bowl attendance is down because ESPN and the bowl committees are morons. They come up with lopsided matchups like Akron vs. FAU and send teams to far-flung places like Hawaii and the Bahamas.

Attendance is down because of television. At least at Louisiana it is. Nobody over 65 and nobody with small children is coming to a 2pm game on August 31 in Lafayette; at least nobody except those with a death wish. Weeknight games are tough on families with school age children and jobs.

If the Louisiana AD is setting game days and times, the Cajuns will have better attendance, win or lose. Simply because we would play all home games on Saturdays no earlier than 6pm, except for a 4pm late season homecoming game.

Fridays are for high school football. Saturdays are for college football. Sundays and Mondays are for NFL football. Tuesday through Thursdays are for everybody to stay at home or do something besides football. Everybody loses ground when these are violated.

Ultimately it comes down to a lack of interest in the game. Sandusky, kneeling, concussions, soccer, inequitable arrangements, childish behavior on and off the field, academia making horrid business decisions all taking a toll and slowly eroding a game that, in my opinion, is vital in many ways. The very group most served eating it's own tail.

I think the larger issue is that in 2018 we have more entertainment at our fingers tips than ever before. Virtual Reality and AI are going to make the physical "show up and watch" style of entertainment appear archaic. Get ready for it now, football is not going last forever.

In my opinion, college football hit its peak around four or five years ago.

Then they got greedy and put everything behind a paywall.
It was popular when it was broadcast for everyone to see.

Just like with the NFL you expand the playoffs where most teams think they have a shot at getting in and one or two losses does not kill your season then folks stay interested longer. If a good P5 or G5 stumbles out of the gate and drops two games there is about zero chance they are making the access game or playoffs. Have it where teams that just had some bad luck, injuries or vastly improved during the season have a shot and folks stay interested. Even when a good NFL team is playing a bad one at the end seeding is still in play.
