Honest Basketball Assesment
This board is a strange place these days. Some appear unwilling to be critical at all of our team's play. While others throw everything about the program under the bus. As our country has become more polarized so has BlazerTalk. So let's "Make BlazerTalk Great Again" or start a "I'm With Them" slogan to support each other.

With that stated I have a few thoughts and would like everyones thoughts about them. I was fully on the hire Rob train. I thought Ingram was right to go with Rob for a few reasosns. Watching Rob beside Haase I always knew he was going to be a head coach. I knew he could keep a team together that could compete for championships. He was a genuinely good person that would represent the values we want at UAB. I was Pro-Rob and am still very much pulling for him.

With that stated I don't think he's quite found his footing as a head coach nearly two seasons in. I was looking at our schedule the past two years and I'm not sure we've won a single game we were favored to lose before tip-off. I might have missed one, but it doesn't appear so. We've certainly lost games we were favored in, but for the most part have just won a bunch of games we were suppose to win. What would be his signature win...Memphis. A horrid Memphis team at that.

I still believe Rob is going to be a very successful coach, but I also believe we may have given him the keys to a car he wasn't ready to drive yet. How often will we have two posts the caliber of William Lee and Chris Cokely at the same time? I can't fathom not getting a bye in the C-USA tourney with those two guys.

We have next to no bench right now. I've not seen much player development. Lee and Coke were about this good when Haase left. Norton hasn't returned to pre-injury form. Zach Bryant's play seems to have dipped. What players have honestly make drastic improvements the last two years?

I still believe Eshan will be a good coach. I thought he made his best halftime adjustments in his career at WKU game. He's doing solid on recruiting trail, represents the program well, and even goes door to door to get students at games. I even saw him helping at freshman move in day. My question is did we simply give him too much too soon?

I'll always love my team, but I also won't lower expectations of the UAB program. Every single head coach in our history prior to Rob has gotten us to the NCAA Tournament and the NIT. Am I a bad fan for pointing these things out and expecting this team to be capable of more than they've shown?

I think this is a fair assessment. I, too, was solidly behind hiring Rob. Time will tell I guess.

He will have to find a way to be successful without the surrounding environment that helps to be successful.

Rob is 3/4 of the way through year two and he is +6 in wins over all and .500 in conference.

Jared Haase's first two years - +4 wins overall and .438 in conference.

Mike Davis' first two years - +11 wins overall and .593 in conference. *

Mike Anderson's first two years - +20 wins overall and .625 in conference.

Murry Bartow's first two years - +13 wins overall and .566 in conference.

Gene Bartow's first two years - +20 wins overall and .731 in conference. *

* = Had more than one season as a Head Coach prior to coming to UaB.

Rob is a helluva recruit and that was his calling card. He is obviously an very astute guy with a lot of basketball knowledge. He was also a heck of a player. Give the man a chance to hone his craft.

You are certainly not a bad fan for that assessment, although some here make others feel like bad fans if they say anything negative at all, no matter how true it is.. I felt like your assessment was very fair, honest, and objective.

Some people here just have their heads in the sand and don't like be called out on it.

Agree with all you've said. It's clear Ehsan is underperforming with a talented roster and becoming more clear that he wasn't ready for this role. Will he someday grow into a better head coach? Perhaps, but not certain. One thing I won't do is lower my expectations for UAB basketball.

Why do you not take the SOS and returning experience level/talent level into account of these different schedules??

Rob has played easier schedules with better and more experienced players. +6 wins and 500 in conference is terrible if you take into account our SOS and talent/experience level

And if rob is such a great recruiter why is bryant his only recruit that's doing anything to help us this year? Gueye and Hurtado both weren't even ready to play at this level.

Has any head coach in UAB history started with as good a roster without having to recruit a single player as Ehsan? And if so, has any other coach started with as good of a roster in as bad of a league as current C-USA?

Again, he wasn't hired to "hone his craft". He was chosen in order to continue the momentum and maximize this roster that had gone to two straight C-USA titles (tournament champs, then season champs). He brought this up himself when he was hired.

Quote:"My knowledge, my feel for the program, players, community and school, I think that was my biggest thing," Ehsan said. "Nobody had a better pulse on it than I did."
Quote:"You've seen the midmajors who have had sustained and national success. We're in a position with our roster, facilities and leadership that we can do that. That's the unique thing about this situation."

I do agree with Ehsan about one thing though:
Quote:This opportunity, if I wasn't able to become head coach here, could have been another 10 to 15 years where I'm able to get an opportunity like this."

How about injuries ? How about weather ? How about Social Media ?

Why don't I just quit my job and build you a database dissecting every nuance of UaB basketball history ?

I'm pretty sure all the teams we played against brought a full roster and had some sort of desire to win the game. AND talent from game to game is usually decently equal inside of your conference.

Every single coach we've ever has had multiple WTF losses.

-----------------------

You want to know what was my most disappointing seasons for UaB Basketball ?

84-85 - We got bent over and robbed in the Sunbelt Tournament. Then we got a shaft of a seed for the tourney , Michigan State and then our nemesis Memphis State.

85-86 - The best UaB basketball player I ever saw, Steve Mitchell misses two free throws to WIN the Sunbelt Tournament - at home, at the BJCC. Steve needed one to tie and two for the lead. Both were 1/2 an inch short. We then get Missouri and UNC out West, instead of staying closer to home for the NCAAs, because we couldn't close out a game. That same best player went 3 for 21 in the game against UNC, his last game as a Blazer.

If Coach Bartow couldn't make Steve Mitchell hit open shots, I don't know why in the hell you think Rob Eshan should be able to make Haha hit them.

Then what exactly did you expect ? For us to open the box and Rob to be Jared Haase 2.0 ? Because I think that's what we've got. HCJH had one of the best finishers any coach at UaB has ever had. Robert Brown was truly in a very small class of great Blazer Players. Rob doesn't have That Guy yet.

And picking at every little statement or problem really , really helps, everyone. 03-lmfao 03-lmfao 03-lmfao

We have had a good and experienced roster, and played probably the worst two schedules in UAB history. He's barely above .500 against D1 teams with a bottom dweller SOS. What world do you live in? How can you rationalize this as okay/good results? How can you have been a uab basketball fan since the 80s and be okay with what you see now? Bizarre.

I only disagree on the development of Cokley. I think he’s gotten much better. If nothing else, his ability to control his fouls is great development

Why are you still here ? Reading comprehension hasn't been a strong suit for you has it ?

We are 5 games over .500 . That is way better than most teams playing.

Our conference mates have equal talent to us. You can like it or not, or go ahead and deny it like I know you will. Because we all know "The Answer" knows all, therefore everyone else is wrong, even when "The Answer" is presented with facts.

I've seen some pretty crappy schedules over the years. Rob Eshan is not alone. It is however the first UAB season I can remember since the Murry Bartow years that we went into the season with less than 3 servicable or healthy big men.

5 games over .500 in an abysmal schedule. Is that something to brag about?

If we have equal talent to the whole league, then why do you consider rob such a great recruiter? Certainly he's recruited better talent than charlotte, rice, FAU/FIU, southern miss, etc?

And if my reading comprehension is poor, your ability to take facts and stats into context is completely nonexistent. Are you robs dad?

Do you really think that 15-10 in our schedule is 15-10 in a top 25 schedule? You're crazy. The extent to which you keep your head in the sand is baffling.

And crappy schedule is again relative. You refuse to note that we literally had one of the worst schedules in the country going into conference schedule. Literally one of the worst out of 350ish teams.

Fans don't show up, our results are poor, we're 7th in a bad conference, 3 games above .500 against D1 teams in a horribly weak schedule. What else do you need to tell you things aren't going well?

This is about to be my signature.

Just go be an Auburn fan until they get a slap on the wrist for paying players.

You and a few others have made Blazertalk a $hitty place to hang out. And most have left due to your and a few others derisive attitudes. But hey, a man has gotta prove he's right, even if he isn't.

You'd fit right in on MT.org .

Please track with me the highlights of UAB Basketball -

Three sweet 16 appearances ?

One Elite 8 ?

15 NCAA's winning 10 games total ?

That's 39 years of basketball to win 10 games in the NCAAs. We had 6 wins and 7 losses in the first 7 years.

So for the last 32 years, our program has won 4 games in 8 NCAA appearances. Three of THOSE wins came under Mike Anderson's tenure.

So outside of Gene's first 7 years and the 4 years of greatness Mike Anderson brought back to us, We've got one win in 5 appearances in the NCAAs in the other 28 years of mediocre basketball.

But I'm the one out of touch with reality. 01-wingedeagle

Actually I'm just the one that can see how it really is in life and you can't stand it that you are wrong. 03-lmfao 03-lmfao 03-lmfao

Good day and welcome to the ignore list.
