Bottom line in article says "Populous, a global architectural design firm specializing in stadium, arena and convention center design, was engaged to update the BJCC's master plan and make budget estimates on renovations and building a new stadium."

Populous. Very impressive. Awesome!

Eh. Populous created the current rendition that looks like it came out of a high school art class. How anyone thinks sinking the press/luxury box tower down into the stadium, thus eliminating 1/2 or more of the premium sideline seats on the "home" side is a good idea is beyond me.

I hope they put more thought and effort into the final plan.

The present design is just a starting point for ideas. The final plan / design will take into account the actual amount of money the company and its contractors have to work with. A lot of the "bells and whistles" in the idea phase may have to be altered or even eliminated when actual costs meet actual funding. Even the final number of seats and / or luxury boxes is probably still up for discussion as well as other amenities fans might desire. Real money determines real final design.

Two, small scoreboards on the same side of the stadium won't work, either... no way this is the final design.

But if you ask me what my #1 desire for this stadium is, I want the seats as close to the field as safety allows. No field-level walkway. I know they will make room for soccer, but minimum allowable dimensions would be great.

There have been a number of suggestions about desired amenities, most reactions to unhappiness with Legion Field. Things I would like are comfortable stadium backed seating (not benches), escalators / elevators to move fans to portal levels (not ramps), hand rails for all stairs, concessions open to the field so you don't have to miss game action while waiting in line for food / drinks (an idea I saw at the Astrodome), alternating green and gold turf so that even if other teams are playing, UAB's presence will be evident.

The walkway around Legion Field is the remains of the running track from the days it hosted collegiate track and field competitions on real grass. The north end zone section was designed to bridge the track so it would not block the running events.

They have not hired a management team or design team for the stadium as of today. They have not even sent out an RFP and I was told personally they will not do that until finding is 100% secured.

In short you are looking at schematic drawings from a firm that was hired to do just that. It's to give you an idea what it could look like. (See Football facilities).

It has not been designed.

RE: al.com: BJCC expansion, new stadium: What happens next?
As Attalla said, no final design is possible until final funding is secured. At this time, only Jeffco and B'ham are on board with specific funding proposals leaving a sizable gap to be filled by others. That gap is between the $174 million mentioned so far for just the stadium and the total renovation costs of over $300 million** estimated for the whole BJCC remake. Is it possible that even a modest 45,000 seat seasonal stadium is too large a dream for a metro area competing with Huntsville and its planned stadium?

** Edit thanks to AttallaBlaze in post #11 How far over may be dependent on how soon the jobs actually get funded and contracted out.

It’s a little over 300 not 500 million.
