RE: @ Northeastern (Game 2)
When I was watching the game I couldn't believe their student section had like 5 students cheering. It made me laugh.

RE: @ Northeastern (Game 2)
I really like the NU posters on this board and they don't need this. It's not their fault. The Huskies are always good and will eventually start getting some love. I like their program and their announcers are always professional. It's a good broadcast.

It is shocking, to me, to watch a game and see less people than I do at a HS game here. I also feel for the players, coaches, cheerleaders and everyone else involved with the program out there giving everything they have to an empty arena.

NU has been a solid addition to the CAA as far as competition. But, if we want the conference to get the next level of having more than one bid, fan support is vital. Even UNCW was losing student attendance at games. It seems this year that has turned around despite a losing record. I hope your AD has success.

I think when Yeager invited NU to join in 2005 he knew adding a team in the 6th largest market with 4 pro teams and 4 major colleges within a 10 minute drive from each other could be a problem for attendance. Sure he knew.

Now everyone knows about our attendance issues. Has nothing to do with the team’s performance. Southern schools not named Duke, North Carolina, Miami or Clemson aren’t going to pack the arena like Michigan State did.

Let me ask y’all this ..

Supposed UNCW, UNC and let’s say UNC Greensboro were in Charlotte with Davidson? I mean if those universities were in the city. Joined by the Panthers and Hornets.

How good do you honestly think your attendance every year would be?
there is ZERO doubt being the only show in town makes a big difference in attendance

Unfortunately NU is located in a city the overall.population does not support college basketball. Even their ACC school, BC, only averaged a little over 4200 last year.

82Hawk,

In no way shape or form am I, and I’ll speak for SBTL, admonishing you or anyone else.

We’re just trying to give our points of view, but trust us we’re not thrilled about it.

Swampcougar1 I have a membership on your boards and your fans killed NU big time about this. I ask the same question about sharing the area with mutiple schools.

And you guys have constantly ripped your attendance.

I’ll say it once again, Boston isn’t a hoops town. Never has unless the Celtics are great. It’s baseball and hockey. The Pats have made inroads, but once their dynasty is done (and it maybe now after SB 52) we’ll see how popular they remain.

RE: @ Northeastern (Game 2)
I get the problems. But, NU is a university and they do at least have students who could attend. Alumni who could attend. Staff who could attend and maybe some errant fans. But it's a great point that Boston College is on par with UNCW in attendance, and they have ACC teams in the house every game. I wonder what their attendance would look like if they were in the old Big East?

Yep. No offense to NU, but Yeager's philosophy of bringing in schools from big media markets was terrible, though that was par for the course for the decisions Yeager made.

Drexel (Philly - pop. 1.6M), Hofstra (Hempstead, NY - 760k + NY media market), Towson (Baltimore market - 618k), NU (Boston - 618 k), and Georgia State (Atlanta - 420k), all get lost in their markets unless they can hit a high ceiling.

Meanwhile, the SEC's towns are:

* Nashville, TN (population: 685k)
* Lexington, KY (326k)
* Baton Rouge, LA (229k)
* Knoxville, TN (179k)
* Columbia, SC (130k)
* Gainesville, FL (124k)
* College Station, TX (117k)
* Athens, GA (115k)
* Columbia, MO (109k)
* Tuscaloosa, AL (90k)
* Fayetteville, AR (74k)
* Auburn, AL (53k)
* Starkville, MS (24k)
* Oxford, MS (19k)

That's one of the things that drew me into Hawk hoops, growing up a huge sports fan and moving there and seeing how much the town cared and showed. I agree with you, Media markets don't matter much when 90% of said market doesn't care.

I think 10% caring in some of those markets is being too kind, actually. I feel bad for the NU fans on the board. I don't think it's something we should be reminding them of every season we play them at NU or when their contingent makes the trek to the CAAT. It seems to rub the same salted wound feeling to them that bringing up a certain ACC school does for us. Let's just appreciate the NU fans that do care about their program and support CAA ball.

I wish there was a way the CAA could attract more from those markets, but I don't think it's possible. They would have to pull off a miraculous run at a national championship against all odds for anything like that to happen. Then some married, rock star actor would walk down the street with some side chick and that would be the big story and nobody would care again. Sometimes those "big markets" are their own enemy.

Drexel, makes sense. You have a perennial top 25 D1 team playing right in their back yard. I never quite understood why NE couldn't pull at least a bit more. The reality is, NE is definitely the best D1 Hoops team in Boston!

While that is easily debatable (credit to NU for that!), it's also about the level of talent they're playing. NU is bringing CAA teams to their venue while BC, even though they suck, is allowing their fans the opportunity to see top ACC talent regularly.

Huh?

BC being a member of the ACC plays T25 talent regularly. Yes, they draw MUCH BETTER basketball regularly. Can CAA talent compete with them, yes. No doubt, and that's been proven by our last two UNCW teams. However, those ACC teams are loaded with more basketball talent and that's not debatable.

I meant in terms of attendance. Obviously the talent level is better. an ACC school drawing 4200 is about as bad as NE's numbers. That was my point. I agree with your premise they should draw more, but they don't.

RE: @ Northeastern (Game 2)
Yep, but anyways... back to NU (not NE).

We likely won't see the Huskies again until next year, so good luck to them the rest of the way and in the CAAT.

RE: @ Northeastern (Game 2)
To be honest, BC hoops only sells out when UNC and Duke come to town.

Even when they were good (and it’s been awhile) they weren’t drawing big crowds for the other ACC members.

If the old Big East was still intact they would draw pretty well because of the regionalism and familiarity with the universities.

We appreciate being in the CAA and love all the competition and fans that love their teams. It’s a far cry from the America Least, although that league seems to have gotten better since we left.

We’re all excited about our new AD. He has a reputation for turning things around and having creative ways to get more alumni and fan support.

But when he was asked at his presser does that mean bringing back football he said he didn’t think it was feasible at this time. Oh well.

I would love one more crack at the Huskies in Charleston. The play in game is not set it stone for us and we still have to play Elon at home. I think the 6th seed is a realistic goal and to avoid the play in game.

You guys definitely have a lot of great things going for you, despite your difficult circumstances.

Baseball should be fun to watch this year. Mike Glavine is doing tremendous things with that program.
