MTSU - 3,2,1
I haven't done many of these this year, as I'm trying to enjoy real life. 04-cheers

But, it was a big game, so here it goes:

3 Observations
1) I usually keep these about ODU, but I wanted to give MTSU their due. That's a very tough team. They will be a serious threat to win a tourney game for the third year in a row. They are big and they are tough. They pushed, pulled, and did whatever they had to do to get rebounding position, and I admire that. On top of that, they clearly have established a winning culture. In crunch time, Giddy and King made big plays. My hats go off to them.

2) I get that fans are upset about the loss, and maybe more so that it feels like it has been forever since the Monarchs won a big game. But, you absolutely cannot ask for more effort from the guys. They gave everything. MTSU is a tourney quality team. Despite the flaws, the Monarchs showed last night that they are right on the cusp of that.

3) Shooting. In the end, basketball is a game about putting the ball through the hoop. We just don't do it well enough. Some might argue that it's because we're not deep enough, but I'd argue that we're just not good enough to do it on a consistent basis. We missed some really good looks early in the game (I think specifically of our first or 2nd possession of the game where Trey gets the ball in the post, gets doubled, and kicks a beautiful pass to the opposite wing where Ahmad is wide open), and we couldn't make them then. Ahmad's shot is flat. BJ and Xavier both rushed their first attempts from deep. I would have loved to see Hueitt or Godwin get a run for a chance to knock down some shots, but last night's game called for some grown ass men, and I'm not sure they would have been able to physically handle it.

Two Questions
1) What adjustments can the players/coaches make to get over the hump? It's clearly not a matter of effort. But, is it a confidence thing? A concentration thing (the three bungled fast breaks nearly killed me)? Is it time to throw the young guys into the fire? I'm not sure I have the answer, but Jones and company have one month to figure it out.

2) Here's the big question: how will the Monarchs respond on Saturday night? UAB is a really talented team, especially on the offensive end. The Monarchs better be ready to play right at tip off.

One Prediction
1) At this point, the only thing that really matters is positioning for the CUSA Tournament. The Monarchs have to finish in the Top 4 to have a realistic shot. This UAB game looms LARGE after the emotion of last night. If the Monarchs can find a way to take care of business at home, I'd be pretty confident about finishing in the Top 4 and having a puncher's chance in Frisco.

And, FWIW, a really good crowd last night. I had a friend who was watching the stream tell me this morning that he could tell the Ted was rocking. It might have been the best crowd at the Ted since the NIT run.

After a night to sleep on things i woke up not feeling as bad about last nights performance. Unlike the WKU game, i came away from this game feeling like we can play with these guys and if we make a few shots and get a better officiated game we could beat them. Hopefully we put up a better showing against WKU's place and we go into the tourney feeling that we have a legitimate shot.

They got away with a lot. I respect that about as much as I respect VCU hack-a-thons. I do respect the winning culture, but that crap they pull on the boards is not basketball and shouldn't be tolerated.

Quote:2) I get that fans are upset about the loss, and maybe more so that it feels like it has been forever since the Monarchs won a big game. Agree with this. Effort was not lacking and ability is there. We have as good of a chance to win the CUSA tournament as we have over the last 5 years. We have the athletes and the talent.

Quote:3) Shooting. In the end, basketball is a game about putting the ball through the hoop. We just don't do it well enough. Some might argue that it's because we're not deep enough, but I'd argue that we're just not good enough to do it on a consistent basis. Disagree with the statement that we just aren't good enough. I believe, much like FTs, it is mental. We know BJ can hit them consistently. He did so for the first 15 or so games this year. We know Caver can. He had a good stretch last year where he did it. We may need to look ate investing in a sports psychologist or someone that can get these kids in the right mental state.

Also sitting near courtside last night I saw why Hueitt and Godwin are not getting minutes. The chemistry between BJ, Caver, and Haynes is about as good as I have ever seen in a backcourt at ODU. When Green was in, it was gone (on both ends of the court). We simply cannot afford to take any of the 3 starting guards out of the game but for a couple of spot minutes and there just aren't enough of them to go any deeper than Green. The way the 3 are playing together, if they can get into the right mental zone to hit their shots, we will win the CUSA tournament.

Two Questions
Quote:1) What adjustments can the players/coaches make to get over the hump? It's clearly not a matter of effort. But, is it a confidence thing? A concentration thing (the three bungled fast breaks nearly killed me)? Is it time to throw the young guys into the fire? I'm not sure I have the answer, but Jones and company have one month to figure it out.

See above. No way to we throw the freshman into it unless we are in the midst of an easy win. Need to figure out the mental side. I was fine with the bungled fast breaks. Only 2 were truly bungled and 3 others were reversed on BS charge calls (2 on Porter and 1 on Caver) that cost us as many as 8 points (2 of those should have been "And 1".

For much of the game, first half especially, we were only scoring on fast breaks because we could not score in the half court against that set defense. We had to take our shots when they were there, and in my opinion, we ran the fast break very well all in all.

Quote:2) Here's the big question: how will the Monarchs respond on Saturday night? UAB is a really talented team, especially on the offensive end. The Monarchs better be ready to play right at tip off.

I would assume we respond as we did after losing to WKU. UAB is a tough team, but this is a game we should find a way to win as we did against Marshall. If we don't respond, I fear we are going to hit a rough patch that we may not recover from as it is critical we continue to have something to play for. Once you "check out" it is much more difficult to get that chemistry back and without that chemistry in place, any efforts of total team improvement will be for naught. As of now, we are still only 1 game back with another shot at WKU. While we need help and running the table is unlikely, at least there is a chance to take the regular season. Losing on Saturday would make it almost impossible and require more help than could be expected.

Quote:One Prediction
1) At this point, the only thing that really matters is positioning for the CUSA Tournament. The Monarchs have to finish in the Top 4 to have a realistic shot. This UAB game looms LARGE after the emotion of last night. If the Monarchs can find a way to take care of business at home, I'd be pretty confident about finishing in the Top 4 and having a puncher's chance in Frisco.

What matters is improvement to the point of winning the tournament. Top 4 is not and should not be the goal. Top 4 is pretty much a given with Marshall losing last night and top 3 is probable, barring the wheels falling off completely. We cannot practice and play with the goal of preventing a meltdown. UAB and Marshall are not going to run the table and we have a 2-game lead on both. We need to practice and play with the goal of crushing WKU and MTSU in the tournament. To achieve the goal of getting to that point would mean beating down everyone else on the way there, one game at a time, in more impressive fashion each time.

RE: MTSU - 3,2,1
804 - I feel the opposite. After waking up this morning nice and chill, I have come to the realization that this team can't win the CUSA tournament (not that it is a surprise to anyone really) but if we can't beat WKU or MTSU on our home floor, how are we supposed to handle them in Texas after a game or two the day before? I admit when the announcement came out that the tournament would be in Frisco I figured I'd go (direct flight!!) but now I'm wondering - what's the point. It's obvious we will have an early exit unless we get lucky. And relying on luck doesn't feel good.

Also - if I were a betting man, MTSU +2.5 is the easiest money in the world. Said it before the game too. Oh well.

I wasn't at the WKU game, but it was the best crowd I have been among at the Ted since the Freeman half-courter. Very strong showing.

I wouldn't invest the money to go to the tournament either, but that's why they play the game. We are very capable of beating either team if we shoot decently. We are capable of shooting well as we have done so on several occasions this year. Aside from the shooting, the offense looks good. They are moving with and without the ball well and passes ar sharp, inside and out. MTSU has a great defense that we were able to get open shots against. It doesn't even require a statistical anomaly or an intervention from the basketball gods that have us hitting ridiculous shots with hands in our face, just averege shooting. We hit 5-25 from 3 last night and the only bad/heavily contested one that comes to mind was the airball Haynes threw up in the last minute when the game was effectively over. If we hit 9-25 (36%), we win the game and perhaps even win it handily.

Definitely understand what you are saying. I'm certainly not saying i would expect to beat them should we face them in Frisco. I guess the fact that it was a 50/50 game with 4 minutes to go after we shot the ball as poorly as we did left me with room for hope. If BJ and Caver shoot the ball better and we get anything from Green its a different game. Those are big if's i understand. I guess i would describe my feeling is that it is possible while not necessarily probable that we could pick up a victory. I didn't have that feeling after the WKU game.

RE: MTSU - 3,2,1
Agree with most of those observations. Thought we played tough. Thought the offense did just enough to win if the defense had not let us down.

Thought Carver did an excellent job on King, was surprised to see he had 17. Did fine shutting down Walters and Potts for the majority of the game as I thought would happen. I did not expect a 30% shooter to go 7-12 and 2-3 from 3 point range; many off balance long 2 point jumpers. They have a lot of athletes, play hard, and Potts/King figure out ways to score down the stretch. I love having the depth of people that can score, but we lack the one guy that we can do to in crunchtime to get a score. As much as I love Porter, he's not the guy to do it in a halfcourt set.

Haynes and BJ clearly have to shoot better. Just no getting around that.

Thought Randan put in a pretty solid game though Carver probably guarded King better. Which, speaking of Carver, he put in a really good game.

The talent is there with Xavier though he needs to work out some kinks in the jumper. Thought he was a little bit too agressive on offense. Played ok on defense.

Caver was ok, but has to shoot better from 3. The turn from him having an AND1 opportunity to an offensive foul was really backbreaking.

Vassor gave us 2 mins of maintaing status quo, all we can ask for from him.

9 - Consecutive losses to MTSU.

8 - Consecutive CUSA losses to MTSU.

7 - Consecutive seasons without an NCAA bid after this season ends.

Carry on...

I am sure that's a waste of time since if the posters wanted to mask it they can by simply resetting their modem unless this poster is the only poster in that IP block.

RE: MTSU - 3,2,1
I'm going to agree to disagree with some of you about the freshmen not playing. I continue to be frustrated by JJ's intransigence about playing Hueitt when we obviously need scoring. There were two major missed opportunities (IMO) last night.

The first, during the last possession of the 1st half. With the game tied, we had the ball with the shot clock off playing for the last shot (no worries about defense). Why not insert Hueitt...your deadliest 3pt shooter...and let him have a chance? I see nothing but upside by trying him. Yes, he would have been coming in cold, but I don't think that would really matter to him.

The second was during the final 2 minutes or so of the game. We were trailing by 5-6 pts and needed to score...or we lose. It's that simple. We were really struggling on offense, so why not try to bring in a scorer? Again, if we DON'T SCORE...WE LOSE!!!

I don't get it. I guess I never will. It's the old saw...if you don't try anything different, you get the same results.

On the plus side, the Ted looked great on the stream last night and the crowd was really rocking. It reminded me of the old days against VCU. Nice job Monarch fans!

The student section was impressive last night. Not only being full, but pretty engaged. It looked like there was significant presence by fraternities. Whatever it has taken to get them out for WKU and MTSU, needs to continue. If you can engage the fraternities, which shouldn't be that hard, in theory, if that participation is pursued, that will go a long way to reviving the student section.

Says T-macs less intelligent alter ego lol.

Everyone on this board says exactly how they feel.......who needs alter ego's to talk about jones not being up to the task?

I love that you are complaining about this and not about losing yet another game against a good team.

Par for the course for you really though.

Hopefully that 3.2.1 is the countdown to a new, more competent and more successful coach.

Sure would be nice to post a recap about a top 50 rpi game that isn't all just blather about "how close we are".

You make a lot of sense Maryland Monarch....When nobody can make a shot..5 for 25...and you need a bucket badly...why not put Hueitt and Godwin in with nothing to lose...

Agreed. If these freshmen aren't ready to contribute, why burn the redshirts? Seems like a waste to me.

Maybe they are the secret weapons for Frisco.
