Baseball is another no brainer: CUSA > CAA.

Additionally, I still don't understand everyone's fascination with JMU. As a whole, there athletic program is mostly awful year after year. They bring nothing to the table other than being a few hours closer than some other schools. Most importantly, why would we want to take away our biggest recruiting advantage over them - being FBS? Why invite more FBS competition and water down the recruiting pool even further for us? It reminds me of when VCU put a bonus clause in Shaka's contract for beating us. The main reason for this was so they could maintain one of the only advantages they had over us in recruiting.

My tea's gone cold, I'm wondering why I got out of bed at all
The morning rain clouds up my window, and I can't see at all
And even if I could it'll all be gray, but your picture on my wall
It reminds me that it's not so bad, it's not so baaaaad

We are a geographical outlier in a far flung conference where travel costs (across all sports) prevent us from being competitive in attracting and keeping mid-upper level coaching talent. JMU would provide some relief for that and the coaching talent would offset any recuiting issues caused by competing with JMU. I actually think having a regional rivalry would help recruiting. It would generate interest in both schools and keep the talent here as opposed to going somewhere line FAU and Arkansas State.

Agree with you on almost everything, particularly soccer and baseball, where CUSA are actually pretty strong. Disagree on JMU, at least the part about their programs being "mostly awful year after year." Their men's basketball is largely mediocre or worse, but in addition to being one of the top FCS programs in the country, they also have very strong softball and a women's basketball team that, while not quite as good as they were under Kenny Brooks, is still pretty good. And while they don't bring the D.C. and Richmond markets (do their fans still claim that? I haven't been on their board in a while), they do have a reasonable presence everywhere in the state. So I can see the appeal.

See bold above

Other than MBB, not true. Most sports at JMU are very successful.

The problems, for most programs, fcs provides little exposure. JMU has managed huge fcs football exposure (CGDX2 and playoffs on ESPN) but that is not easy to sustain. MBB is a ticket to March Madness and JMU MBB sucks.

New arena = better recruits?

If MBB could turn it around, JMU sports are technically very successful.

They don’t have the DC market. Lots of alumni here, but VT and UMD are DCs football schools and UMD and GT are their basketball schools. That’s just local teams. DC is loaded with every big name P5 school you can think of.

Agreed. I don't think anyone has the D.C. market. Even the biggest presences here have only a relatively small fraction. I just know that some folks on the JMU board claimed to "bring" the D.C. and Richmond markets. I concede that they probably fly the flag more highly there than ODU does, but not enough that they could use it as an argument for a better conference.

We have nothing in DC. Sometimes I feel as though I’m the whole presence.

It's weird; for as huge as this place is and for as many people make their way from Norfolk to D.C., you'd think ODU would have at least a nominal presence. I've been to a couple of VCU basketball watch parties in Clarendon and while they didn't flood the bar in black and gold, they had a respectable presence. At the very least there should be an ODU football watch party up here when the stars align in such a way that one of its games actually reaches a TV channel up here.

The only time I’ve ever seen a decent crowd of ODU folks up here is at the patriot center pre game parties at the bar across the street from GMU.

I've seen a few around Annapolis...because of the Navy presence many folks around here at least know where ODU is...I saw a guy at the USNA gym a while back that is a representin' grad...re bball, I think JMU might be about 10th in line around DC...

There is not a football team at the G5 level outside of Boise State and maybe Wyoming that bring much of any market. Furthermore, TV has peaked and is bleeding badly. Does it really matter to the producer if an ad is purchased by Brothers in Law Huffman and Huffman, Harrisonburg Chiropractic Therapy, or the Idaho School for the Deaf and the Blind? The days of national advertising on lower tier football are over.
