Future Of Football
See this article on the dramatic drop off in youth participation in football. I like watching football but I don't know how the game can survive in the long run unless something happens that I don't see happening. No matter how popular it is as a spectator sport, football can't survive if parents won't let their kids play the game. Tobacco smoking used to be such so hugely popular that no one could have imagined it fading away but it has.

By the way, if football goes, the present incarnation of the ACC goes as well since it makes zero sense apart from football.

Even if participation in High School drops by 90%, there will still be enough for universities to give scholarships and run their programs. The talent level won't be the same but there are plenty of kids still willing to play.

Do you really think that high schools will still sponsor football teams if participation drops by 90%? The sport is kind of expensive. Don't you think that state legislatures would start banning the sport if participation drops like that? That won't happen in Texas anytime soon but I could imagine it starting to happen on the West Coast and in the Northeast in the next few years and spreading from there. And that's not even considering the very real threat that litigation will make football at all levels impossibly expensive.

Denial isn't a river in Africa.

The only way basketball schools can become more relevant ... by killing off the sport of football.

I agree...however, will 40-80K folks be willing to pay top dollar to see the game?

If I were a school without lacrosse I would field a team pronto. Unlike soccer...there is enough scoring to keep folks interested.

Wilkie...actually it is very real in the areas with some to lots of affluence and disposable income. If your kid is truly a superstar athlete parents will still likely support lil Johnnie in football...but where you are losing participation bigly is: the average sized athlete who is decent. Those types of athletes are now playing soccer, basketball, hockey and lacrosse and baseball is making a decent comeback.

Kids are lemmings...that future football star might not want to play football when all his buddies are playing lacrosse or baseball.

It's not the affluent who will continue playing football. The chance to change your economic status will continue to drive those kids - for college educations that would otherwise be unattainable, to those who can actually play at the highest level.

As long as the NFL is around. paying multi-million dollar salaries, kids will play football. Former NFL all star Chad Johnson, or should I say Chad Ochocinco, besides being a standout wide receiver growing up, was also a great soccer player. He has said in interviews that he chose football because of the possibility of a lucrative pro career.

Now MLS soccer is providing another option for high caliber athletes. As that league grows, the salaries will increase, and you will start to see kids like Chad OC choosing soccer over football.

Maybe a wrote it poorly...I was saying Football participation is clearly down in the richer, more affluent areas and those kids will continue to play in ever increasing numbers to sports like: soccer, lacrosse, hockey, baseball.....

It will ONLY hurt the G5 and barely even touch the p5, at all.

Enough people LOVE football and will never quit it regardless of what medically could happen.

Denial isn't a river in Africa.

Boxing has not gone away and is not going to and UFC is more popular than ever and it's not going away. If those sports can't be litigated out of existence, I don't see why football would. No, I don't expect legislatures to start banning the most popular sport in the history of the United States.

If there was a 90% drop off at your school, sure that high school's football would probably be dropped, but that doesn't stop the athlete that wants to play from going to a nearby school. Football magnet high schools attract the top talent in there region already. So if the more affluent schools or the smaller schools drop football there would be even more athletes to draw from.

I don't expect the national average to drop 90% maybe 20-30% and that won't effect college football except for a slight drop off in talent.

If any thing, college football is becoming more popular because of the political issues that are turning off pro fans to the NFL. I have a friend who is a lifelong Eagles fan and veteran who has not watched the NFL since the protests started and is not going to watch the Super bowl out of principle.

Litigation may be a problem but that's usually mitigated by having the participants sign a letter of consent form. If those consent forms don't hold up on court, then there might be an issue but like I said before, boxing and UFC are not going away and I don't see why football would.

Boxing and UFC do not rely on youth sports and public schools to work up a pipeline to get recruited at 16-18 years old.

In NY right now some of the smaller school districts are combining teams or playing 8 man football.

I think Football will still be popular but I see it losing some market share to other sports in youth leagues and secondary schools.

05-stirthepot Hence soccer moms' country. They are same people that hate hunting and fishing. They hate blood and killing for sports. But they want to eat meat as long as somebody else kills and cleans it. They are afraid there children will be hurt playing football. They are the descendants of hippies and draft dodgers. They are to be pitied! 07-coffee3

Youth football will likely go to flag or touch until around the high school level. I don't think that it will drop much in popularity.

An 8% rise in difference is a far cry from a 90% complete drop off.

Sorry, but where do you think the golden gloves tourney, etc get there participants. There are martial art tourneys, etc and they are all made up of various ages. Boxing, mix martial arts, etc all start at a young age as well.
