Is Cane Broome The X Factor?
I love watching Broome play. The offense seems much faster when he is on the floor and some of the passes he makes are fantastic. Both he and JJ are averaging the same amount of minutes with Cane leading JJ in all stats except turnovers. I know Broome needs to pick it up on the defensive end, but he is a much more polished offensive player than JJ. When was the last game JJ even scored? Don't get me wrong, JJ has given this team steady floor leadership this season, but to be elite, do we need more Broome?

Broomes handle can be shaky at times and will throw some WTF passes, his defensive positioning is probably not as good as JJ. But he definitely brings more upside to his game. He is taller and lankier, which helps him recover on defense more and get more steals. He is capable of creating offense for himself or others better than JJ.

I think if Cane can take the next step and emerge this team will be much better.

The other X factor to me is one of the reserve big guys being capable of spelling KW or Gary without being such a dropoff, probably Brooks.

Brooks, Broome and Scott are known quantities. I don't think we are going to get much more from them than what we've seen up to this point.

The X-Factor is Trevor Moore. Moore is a freshman and has been continuing to improve every game. He is good enough on D to stay in the game. If he can turn into the sharpshooter he was in high-school it allows Evans and Cumberland to get some rest. It also provides Cronin with the option of using a big lineup with Evans, Cumberland and Moore on the floor together.

The short answer is YES.

IMO, Mick has not played the PG position well this year. Broome needed the bulk of the minutes, even if he struggled at times, to get more experience and more time to gel with this team.

And for those saying his defense is the problem, you're wrong. Check out the advanced stats. They show Broome is the same or BETTER defensively than Justin Jenifer.

Defensive +/-
Broome 2.4
Jenifer 0.7
Advantage - Broome

Defensive Win Shares
Broome 1.1
Jenifer 1.0
Advantage - Broome

Defensive Rebound %
Broome - 5.9%
Jenifer 3.5%
Advantage - Broome

So then let's look at each players TOTAL impact and not just defensive.

BPM (Total Plus Minus)
Broome - 6.0
Jenifer - 1.8
Huge advantage Broome

RE: Is Cane Broome The X Factor?
It would be nice but I think for this year this is who is going to be. There may be a big game in here down the stretch somewhere but we are just as likely to see a lot more of these 1-2 bucket performances and the miscues that get him back on the pine.

Perhaps he makes the stride to consistently being able to play against this level next year.

Broome is shooting at a higher clip from 3.

Moore 19-53 .358

I think its Moore as well. He's the kind of player that if he gets cooking, can knock back 3-4 three's in under a couple minutes without anyone realizing what hit them.

Moore plays incredibly hard on both ends of the court. He disrupts lanes, redirects plays by denying his man the path he wants to take, and never looks lost in no mans land. I love the minutes he gives. He’s one of those guys that has a purpose with everything he is doing out there.

That's is why Moore is the X-Factor. He has a history of being a sharpshooter, but to this point in the season he hasn't shot as well as he could. He is the unknown variable - he has potential to play better offensively late in the season than he has so far. Cane Broome is a good PG, but I don't think he's going to give us much more than he has shown so far.

I personally like Cane coming off the bench when the other team is starting to rotate in their second team. Provides a nice little spark to take advantage of the other team's bench.

Broome has graded out as the better defender in Synergy, DRtg, and DBPM.

I don't always agree with Mick on coaching decisions but I'm in the same place on this one. At first, I didn't like the idea of a three headed point guard but Mick's made it work. If the team starts fast, JJ is defending and moving the ball to the scorers. A slow start offensively and Cane seems to bring instant offense and renewed energy off the bench. End of game, Evans handles the ball well and with his size, passing, and scoring ability he opens up a lot better offensive looks than the old "dribble out the shot clock and hope to make a desperation shot," routine.

As those critical of Broome not starting have suggested UC could risk falling 10 or 12 points behind from the starting horn when facing teams that shoot well. Then when he enters the game there is certainly more pressure on him to produce immediately. Unfortunately, we can't look into the future to predict which formula will deliver a deeper run in the tourney. But we all know our hindsight is 20/20 and this discussion will likely remain active until tipoff at the new 5th/3rd next November.

RE: Is Cane Broome The X Factor?
Unless our backup bigs start producing, I would think a starting five of Jenifer-Broome-Cumberland-Evans and Brooks will be heavily considered. By then Trevor Moore might've played his way into contention, but right now Broome/Jenifer are essentially co-starters.

I like cane I think he will be the starter next year but I like him come off the bench right now he has way to many wtf turnovers plus seems out of place on defense which puts more pressure on the rest of the team to recover as far as x-factor I think there is a few things

first Kyle has to play better he disappears way to much and seems to get frustrated if not getting the ball
second the bench needs to play better Scott and Brooks have not been playing as well these last few weeks
last they need to stay healthy GOBEARCATS

That lineup would get torched against bigger lineups. The only way you can get away with 2 PG lineup is if both guards are scorers, which JJ is not. I'm looking to see Trevor Moore or maybe even Keith Williams step into that 2 role next year with Cumberland and Evans at the 3 and 4. Don't rule out Logan Johnsnon either, apparently the kid is very skilled.

Hopefully Evans comes back considering his Draft status has improved to the 1st Round.

I doubt Evans comes back but is he does im sure uc will play often with just one true big.

As for broome... Love what he brings and think he's been used perfectly so far.

All depends on the post season. if he drives a Cincy run, then he's gone. i've posted before, he should go if for no other reason then he won't have the benefit of KW and Clark on offense. Having a defense focus on you, like they do with Clark, is way different then benefiting from the doubles the post command playing inside out through Clark.

I hope as the season progresses Mick takes the training wheels off Broome.

He should be playing 25 minutes a night and getting the bulk of the minutes in crunch time.
