RE: Wrestling 2017-2018
285 - Nye couldn’t do anything against Gunning. I’m afraid he will be a .500 wrestler at best.
125 - Bardezbain wasn’t strong enough to finish his scoring opportunities and ended up in constant danger as a result.
133 - This could have been a different outcome if Tutolo finished his deep shot early in the match. To not get a TD when you have your opponent’s leg in the air is demoralizing.
141 - Rooney is a completely different wrestler from last year; most improved by far. He looks for bonus points frequently and is not afraid to mix it up.
149 - Monico with a solid win against another UB wrestler intent on not wrestling. Buffalo’s strategy throughout most of the matches was to slow the action. The ref allowed them to do so and was very slow to penalize them for it. He also missed a fleeing call (can’t recall the match) but gave UB a deciding point on a stall call in OT that completely changed the outcome at 184.
157 - Sparkman won against an opponent that refused to wrestle.
165 - Bast did the same.
174 - Barreiro did the same.
184 - McCracken is a true freshman. McCracken is a true freshman. McCracken is a true freshman. He gassed and was screwed by the stall point in OT. He will learn not to allow refs to decide matches in the future when he’s the superior wrestler.
197 - Conel was a case of too much, too early, with no result. He tried to throw constantly; I thought I was watching a Greco Roman match. If he had mixed it up, he would have won.

Better effort than last year and we’ve improved at several weight classes. We let it slip away but we’re young. UB stole it with an assist from the ref refusing to officiate as though it was a collegiate contest.

RE: Wrestling 2017-2018
Just noticed we saw the team December 10th and then we don’t see them until February 9th and 11th and that’s it. Terrible home schedule. Add to that only two non conference women’s games and a home gymnastics meet during the MAC basketball tournament and the Kent Athletic Department needs to pay a bit more attention. I guess this is all we get for getting clobbered by Clemson during football season. I know some of this is beyond their control but this has to be the worst season in a while.

Road Trip!
I went to the Virginia Duals one year. Nice event!

Doesn’t help that much. I see the wrestling team one more time but miss a men’s basketball game and a gymnastics meet. That’s a good trade for you but not me. Two more Friday night or Sunday meets at home would be a lot better in my case.

RE: Wrestling 2017-2018
Good luck to KSU Wrestling @ the South Beach Duals on December 29th & 30th.

They are facing Missouri, Columbia, Cornell, & SIU-Edwardsville.

Here is the link for more details: http://www.kentstatesports.com/news/2017...=wrestling

Is Suglio due back to the lineup any time soon or was his injury season ending?
Will Bardezbain and Tutolo have a better 2nd half than 1st half?
Will Nye's recent tournament championship propel him to an over .500 wrestler?
Can McCracken learn from his mistake vs Buffalo and produce some wins in MAC matches & this weekend? (seems to have a lot of talent)
Can Conel get into better shape and get back to his dominant ways of his 1st 2 years?

Why can’t you follow Kent at the South Beach tournament on track wrestling. In the past it’s always been possible.

I’m working so I just now looked at track wrestling site and saw the scores that I posted.

From KSU web site:

Live results can be followed on TrackWrestling.com and live video can be seen with a subscription to TrackWrestling. The entire event features 12 college teams and is held in conjunction with a high school and youth tournament.

Got it. The meets weren’t exactly in chronological order. Once I scrolled far enough I found it. Too bad they didn’t hide the Missouri result. To be expected but still hard to look at. I wonder why they forfeited 125? Lot of people are sick right now so hopefully that’s all it was.

125 - will Bardezbain (Kent State) over Michael Russo (Cornell) Forf
133 - Anthony Tutolo (Kent State) over Charles Tucker (Cornell) Dec 6-2
141 - Yianni Diakomihalis (Cornell) over Chance Driscoll (Kent State) TF 25-10

197 - Ben Darmstadt (Cornell) over Kyle Conel (Kent State) Dec 13-6
HWT - Jeramy Sweany (Cornell) over Devin Nye (Kent State) Dec 10-8

Kent State's team score was adjusted by -2.000 for unsportsmen like conduct

At least Monico, Barreiro and McCracken kept their matches close. I wonder who got hit for the unsportsmanlike like conduct.

RE: Wrestling 2017-2018
We beat Campbell 18-14.

“They (Campbell) beat us last year and have a similar lineup this year," Andrassy said. "Our lineup is hopefully better. They are about where we are as a team so hopefully we change the result of a few of those weight classes and make it a 2-2 weekend."

Losing to Campbell last year was a low point. I consider this win to be a sign of progress, even if it’s not a significant one.

Is Bardezbain injured? Seems silly to burn Ferri's redshirt year for the 2nd half of the year.

Looks like Tutolo is starting to hit his stride. Nye was hitting his stride until this past weekend's 4 matches. Wondering if Conel will be healthy and in top shape headed into the end of MAC season, MAC Tournament, & NCAA Tournament?

Big weekend ahead @ Ohio U on Friday night and then in Stillwater OK taking on Oklahoma State. Then a 2 week break until they take on EMU @ EMU.

Bardezbain isn’t injured to my knowledge. Ferri was a recruit that Coach A said had an opportunity to start for us as a true freshman. I thought he was our best 125 at the wrestle offs so I’m not surprised to see this move. It’s not uncommon in wrestling to burn a redshirt in this manner as the wrestler can get a lot of match experience in open tournaments during the first half of the season while avoiding the pressure of being a starter right out of the gate. This “seasoning” serves as a warmup for the portion of the schedule that truly matters - conference duals and tournaments.

Tutolo is wrestling well because he’s remained healthy. I’ll continue to cross my fingers because if he gets hot at the right time, I still maintain he can be an AA. For the press release on the OU and OSU matches, Suglio is listed at 285 in addition to Nye. Something tells me they’ll split this weekends matches or Suglio is the new 285.

Regarding Conel, cardio, cardio, cardio. If he can wrestle all 7 minutes, he can do some damage. Taking off just one year reveals how difficult this sport can be. I remember Ben Rings who was having an outstanding career really struggling the season after his military obligation was completed. Without the proper diet and practice, it’s so difficult to come back and that’s why it’s rearely attempted.

We can beat OU. We bested Campbell who we lost to last year and we had Buffalo on the ropes. A win over OU would be another indicator that we’ve improved. Coming into this season, we needed more from 125 (accomplished), 141 (accomplished), 165 (accomplished), 184 (in progress)) and 285 (no change). It’s time to crank it up and wrestle!

Although they are more than capable of doing so, Coach Smith is a gentleman so he will wrestle a couple of back-ups to give us an opportunity to avoid it. Of course, it could still happen...
