I hope Dr K is already considering doubling Coach Langley salary next year because everyone will be wanting her after next year. If not, we could end up in the same mess as we have in MBB with everyone transferring out.

I don't think so. WBB is a limited market post college. Best case you make the WNBA, where you make less than a starting engineer in Houston.

Similarly, there isn't absurd amounts of money floating around WBB, so a Jimbo Fisher type scenario isn't likely to happen. The upward mobility is limited.

That said, I hope Langley stays.

There is quite a lot of money in the top echelon of WBB. Dawn Staley is a good example. Hired at Temple in 2000 having never coached and by the time she was hired away in 2008 was making around 400k by some estimates. South Carolina nearly doubled her salary to around 750k, and her last raise took her to 1.1 million. I know CUSA isn’t in that league but bigger P5 schools will come after talented coaches.

Texas Tech will likely be in the market for a new coach at the end of the season. That said, I think Langley realizes she could have a special season in 2018-19 and I would be shocked to see her do anything this offseason.

But I suppose if an SEC job opened up and she was offered it, that might be a hard thing for her to turn down.

If Rice can keep an up and coming coach like Tina Langley for anything close to the 8 seasons Temple kept Staley that’s a win. So Rice needs to ensure her pay is enough to at least keep other G5 schools and lower tier P5 schools at bay.

Probably, but we should be careful when wording the buyout clause so any potential Langley suitors at least have to think twice before making her an offer.

If p5 schools are willing to pay close to 7 figures a year, we cannot likely have a clause w a buyout big enough to stop it. Hopefully she likes real students!

I’d still tend to do what I’ve always favored, rollover five-year contract with cheap buyout, both ways. Until we are a final four regular, we are going to be a wayvstop for coaches. I’m fine with someone who wants us as a stepping stone because our realistic choices are that or somebody who wants to run out the string.

Real students???
I have rarely encountered a women's basketball player at an NCAA school who wasn't a REAL student.

Agreed. The career prospects of a WBB player is more dependent on their degree than their skills.

A starting engineer pulls in more than the median salary in the WNBA. And quite a bit more. I actually think this helps Rice as Langley can sell Rice's degree and the ability to play high level basketball - and this message, IMO, sticks better in WBB than MBB or FB, as your sport professioknal career potential upside is significantly different in WBB than the big 2 of men's sports. (Not that the majority of mens players have a shot of professional glory, but delusion is strong in those sports all over the country)

Regarding the extension, I think she has earned one for sure. But I also agree about the buyout, it should be rea sonable but not crazy. If Auriemma retires and Uconn comes calling, Langley is gone - no matter how big the buyout. Reasonable so that someone like F_U doesn't get any ideas, but not so burdensome that either party can't move on if they really want to.

I doubt that then 2 girls who transferred to S Carolina, won a national title, then turned pro, were very interested in school. That is obviously not the type we recruit.

Both women were in school for four years.

Kaela Davis played two years at Georgia Tech, a notoriously ****** academic school, and then was at South Carolina for two years. She was an academic awardee (Conference & CoSIDA district). Her dad is Antonio Davis.

Allisha Gray was at North Carolina for two years before spending two years at South Carolina. She was an SEC academic honor roll awardee. Her dad is a high school principal. I bet she sucks as a student.

Rice doesn't hold a monopoly on people interested in school.

Actually, I have posted on multiple occasions over the last ~ 2 years, that WBB, and women athletes , in general, are likely a better match for Rice than MBB or football. Olivia and Erica are excellent examples. My comment was primarily boosterism for Rice, not a slap at all other women athletes, as apparently interpreted by " InterestedX"
Having said that, if the actual basketball program was not the draw, it is hard for me to believe, if as "InterestedX " says, the S Carolina girls were at GT and UNC, that they went to S Carolina, sat out a year and then played their 3rd year of eligibility , for the academics of SC.
These women are competitors, and a lot of factors enter into their decisions.
As more money filters down the ranks to women's sports, I expect to see more. shenanigans

How about MBB? Any of the nominees coming to Rice especially from Texas? This is where Coach Pera needs to step up in his recruiting if none are coming yet.

We have two players from Texas coming in next year. Josh Parrish, a transfer from TCU is in school now and redshirting. Some of our current players tell me he's the best player on the team, and could play the 1, 2 or 3. We have a recruit from Mansfield Timberview that won the 5A State Championship last year and Chris was the MVP of the tourney.
