Martin's Growth
Jeremiah Martin, our not-really-point-guard, has taken big steps this season, as we know. He's not a prototypical point guard, but he's a gutsy stud, and the most fearless finisher the Tigers have had in some time.
Comparing Martin's sophomore season to this season, YTD:
He's averaging 18.1 ppg this season, compared to 10 ppg last season. He has become The Man.
"Oh but he's playing more minutes." Not really. He's averaged 35 minutes per game this season, same as last year. This kinda surprised me.
His assists are down a little-3.9, as opposed to 4.4 last season. Dedric's soft hands had a lot to do with that, IMO.
He averages 4.4 boards this season, 3.1 last year.
2.3 Turns per game. 2.0 last season.
Steals:2.3 per game, as opposed to 1.8 last year.
FREE THROW PERCENTAGE: Martin has gone from 64% last year (a liability at the end of games, especially) to 81% this season. 15-15 last night.
3-Point percentage: up to 32% from 28%.
We REALLY needed someone to step up to lead this team this season. I had hoped it would be Martin, and it has been. Congratulations to our young "not-really-point-guard"!

Yep. He is becoming a force. Just hope the transfer rumors are not an issue and he stays for his senior year. Thanks JM for being a Tiger.

He was stellar last night. Really good back to back games for him.

It cannot be ruled out given Tubby’s transfer rate last year.

IDK about next season, but we'd be screwed without him this year.

If he is able to without sitting out, I’d love to hear the arguments for him to stay?
That’s why it sucked to see Crawford go, there wasn’t really a solid reason for him to stay.

From a players’ perspective, maybe if the Miserables who aren’t showing up in protest of the HC would simply show up then it would be harder for him to leave home. Just sayin’.

Unless good recruiting news suddenly rises, he will need to transfer to obtain a legitimate opportunity to play and advance in the NCAA Tourney.

You would blame a transfer on the fans? For not going to games?

Completely agree, all I hear is Tiger basketball has always been this and Tiger basketball has always been that and we are better than this and we are used to a higher standard, but then we make ourselves look so small time and spoiled by having an empty arena.
Why would any good player want to stay or sign up for this program right now when they know that the first sign of trouble there is no home court advantage anymore. That everyone will start pulling for them to lose so we can fire the coach and all the bitching and moaning they will read. People want him to go get these top players but you can't really bring them on a recruiting visit during games and show them there is no support. Hell the football team can't use it anymore to bring recruits they go elsewhere. If he loses enough and doesn't put a good product on the floor he will be let go but the damn fan boycott doesn't help anything.

In last night's pregame show (radio), the history segment recalled a Memphis game with Tulane in the early 80's, when for a while Tulane played home games in the Superdome. The attendance was reported as 1,400. In the friggin Superdome. I guess it could be even worse.

Is it a boycott? I personally just spend my time and money elsewhere. Painted my living room the other day then sat and watched it dry. It was JUST LIKE watching a Tubby offense. I don't care who the coach is, when they put a decent product on the floor the stands will be packed. Period.
Unfortunately, the school needs to do something. It's time for "Buy a Hotdog and get 2 free tickets" at Tiger Mart. We need to get butts in the seats and our play isn't doing it. Our schedule isn't doing it. Marketing isn't doing it. You may not have a family or anything else going on, but most do. Fans don't OWE Tubby or the university anything.
Also doesn't help that Beale Street has gone back downhill. The clean up downtown project was nice. But it's getting less and less safe again. Hard to take a family. IMHO

The last two games the Tigers played very well. They are enjoyable to watch. Well worth watching the game.

I bought a new TV with some of the money that I normally spend on season tickets. The time spent and hassle of going to the games (30-40 min drive each way downtown, cost of food, beer and parking) outweighed the product on the floor and the crap schedule. Honestly, I'm not sure we'll ever buy season tix again even if they can Tubby. Maybe get one of those mini-packs or buy to a select few games, but sitting at home by a nice fire and watching on TV sure has become appealing.

RE: Martin's Growth
Martin has gotten much better...Especially shooting the ball. Hitting the 3 and outside shots is where his game has greatly improved.
But there are areas he is predictable.
If you let him get to his left hand on a drive he is going to take you to the rack.
If he goes right he is going to pull up or pass. If Martin could handle\finish with his right hand like he handles\finishes with his left he would be a sure fire NBA player

And this attitude, I maintain, is why we are where we. So you don't owe the university anything. Well, technically you're right, but....did Bill Laurie owe his alma mater anything when he donated $10M...did Penny owe anything when he donated whatever million it was?? No, they didn't. I don't owe my alma mater anything either, but I choose to give what I can & buy my season tickets, sit my butt in my seat & cheer. Since I am not a coach, I let professionals do that. If I feel those professionals are not doing their jobs, there is a mechanism that I can use to get that message to them...without trying to tear down what has been built over generations.
