This year actually sets up well for an 8team playoff. Can we have Ohio State play UCF, and that winner play the Bama-Georgia winner?
Back to 2004 Auburn...Tulane 1998. It's not like this has never happened.

There will always be arguments about who is worthy to be considered for the championship. I thought the 2004 Auburn team had a legitimate claim to being the best team in the nation that year, though I didn't think even Tulane fans thought their undefeated team was as good as BCS champion Tennessee.

Expanding the playoff to include four more teams will do nothing to stop the complaints. There will always be someone left out that people will feel are more deserving than a team that gets in.
In agree but calling the other bowls "access" bowls is almost as huge a fraud as calling these games semi finals.

Like I've posted a hundred times. It's made for tv fiction

I’m picking Georgia.

For what it’s worth:

2015 CFP NCG - #4 over #2
2016 & 2017 CFP NCG - #2 over #1
2018 CFP NCG - #3 vs #4

If I were to reseed top 10 after the NY6...
#1 Georgia
#2 Alabama
#3 Oklahoma
#4 Ohio St
#5 Central Florida
#6 Wisconsin
#7 Clemson
#8 Penn St
#9 TCU
#10 Notre Dame

I think it's a great matchup. Playoff proponents want it to be settled on the field and that's what will happen, so there shouldn't be any complaints.

You talk about access and fairness, but how fair would it be for a UCF team to be included in a playoff when it achieved it's undefeated record with a schedule that doesn't compare to the teams ranked above them? Their only win over a team in the final pre-bowl Top 25 was a double overtime win over No. 20 Memphis. Should they get in a playoff over teams with schedules like Ohio State, Notre Dame, etc.? That wouldn't seem too fair to me.

It isn't as bad as LSU-Bama since that was a rematch that nobody wanted to see again. I'll watch, hopefully it is a good game.

I agree that their schedule isn’t the same. They can only play their schedule. They would choose a tougher conference if they could. Schools can’t just up and join whatever conference they want. It’s patently unfair for that and other reasons. That being said, I don’t believe they are one of the best 4 teams but we’ll never know.

Oh, I definitely agree. I don't even want a playoff, but if they are going to have one, people should whine when the result isn't what they were hoping for.

I suppose calling them "access" bowls was simply to grant a lower conference the access to the bigger bowls that they might not have been able to get into previously. IMHO, a school like UCF should be happy they were in a bowl with a nice payout rather than having to settle for a smaller bowl they would have had a tie-in to under the old system. The only way a G5 team gets a sniff of a spot in a four team playoff would require a perfect storm -- an undefeated season with wins over multiple Top 25 teams plus P5 conferences with no dominant teams (conference champs with at least two losses each and no runners up with better records). Not likely. They should either accept their playoff fates and cash their checks or split into another division for championship purposes.

RE: Georgia vs Alabama in title game, who will watch ?
It's not the perfect matchup for TV ratings, but it would be way off to say "almost no one will watch" or "the ratings will be a disaster".

It was said when the Yankees played the Mets in the World Series, and while that wasn't the most-watched World Series in the last 20 years, it was far from the least-watched.

There was a Super Bowl several years ago between the Bears and Colts. Chicago and Indianapolis are closer than Tuscaloosa and Athens. The Colts-Bears Super Bowl had more TV viewers than any previous Super Bowl. 93 million TV viewers is a lot more than "almost no one".

The Georgia-Alabama game ratings will also be helped by the fact that there's only one week between the semifinals and final. IMO, having two weekends of NFL playoffs between the CFP semifinals and final would not be good for the CFP ratings.

Since when do national championship level teams lose their coaches to allegedly lesser programs?

That is BS. All conferences faces the same amount of weak members. They think if you play a pansy like Kansas? They value Kansas more than they value UCF in football. The PAC 12 do think playing schools like Eastern Washington or the top teams in the MWC have more value to the strength of schedule than playing Kansas. The issue is conferences like ACC, Big 12, Big 10 and the SEC are afraid to put teams like the MWC and the AAC on the schedule because they are afraid of losing a game.

I'll watch. Who doesn't want to see Alabama play Georgia? 07-coffee3

It's like asking "if Duke plays Syracuse in the NCAA tourney, who will watch"?

Plenty will.

I don’t want to see Bama and the mutts play that’s for sure, back in the day yeah sure, but not now, not in today’s college football landscape
Fan interest imo will only grow and get very divided as time goes on, 10 conference champions and some wildcards will keep me interested
All this back and forth crap talk about who you played or didn’t play or you don’t make enough money or whatever will go away if you have conference champs play in a real crap talk eliminating playoff

It's nowhere near as bad as 2011 because Georgia hasn't yet played Alabama this season. I'll probably watch until Alabama chokes the life out of Georgia in the 2nd half like last night.

All the conference champions had a shot at the title though. So it's not exactly apples to apples.

Well, to be fair, those teams were allowed to have losses due to their schedule, in some cases multiple losses. UCF get one loss, and they are out.
