Without the press, UNCG was in the bottom 100 in defensive efficiency for 5 of the past 6 years, last year they were top 25 with the press.

Based on this dramatic change, would McGrath ever consider instituting the press?

Or, phrased another way:

UNCW has the 4th worst scoring defense in the entire nation.

Does UNCW have the 4th worst defensive talent in America? Or are UNCW players the 4th worst executors of well thought out defensive schemes designed to match the roster that exists on the team taking the floor?

If not, at what point does the Coaching staff adjust their plans to fit the team that they have rather than to the team they hope to have someday?

I'm glad "The Beard" put in a plug for the Seahawk Club! That was cool fellas.

Another great podcast. Keep up the great work!

Not this time. Just too cost prohibitive. No easy way to get there. Figured it was more important to be at some conference games. Plus, I got to see the women win yesterday and sleep in my own bed. #winning

I believe you used "rip the bandaid off" as the phrase to describe this year

Next podcast you may want to modify it to "rip the stitches out"

The core tenants of what made this team successful have been ripped away leaving a giant painful mess

Any questions (or, like solohawks, suggestions) for the podcast, put them in now. Barnes and I will be recording here shortly.

Here’s my thing about recruiting, most of this year’s talent is gone at this point, with the exception of JUCO and graduate/regular transfers. Turning this ship around for the men’s is really going to help next cycle’s recruiting, and marginally help us out now. Great job as always guys, you always seem a bit reserved to criticize players but I hear ya letting go a little bit about Kalina this time Alex

I think your outlook on recruiting is a bit narrow minded. Yes, all of the 4 star, 5 star talent is gone, but we're not going to have a legitimate shot at those guys anyway. The amount of talent that goes overlooked in recruiting process is pretty incredible. I mean look at some of the players on this team... Talley, Estime, and Gary were all players that didn't sign with UNCW until very late in their senior year, even in Talley's case late in his Post Grad Year at Fishburne. There is talent out there, but the JUCO and Grad Transfer routes could be helpful. They just don't need to reach for someone like a Kalina and waste another scholarship.

There’s always talent, even as late as June. But with the recruiting process being years at this point, if anyone was on the fence about our program with our new coach they’re likely on the other side with this shaky start, unless we are their highest offer. Why risk it when you have offers from more established coaches?

Agreed on Kalina. It seems bad, but I’d rather have an empty spot than fill it with inferior players. Technically, he only has the scholarship for this year, but he’ll take up space on the roster next year unless our coaches are brutally honest and choose not to renew it or he transfers.

Talley was a similar situation to Gary and Jeffrey; new coach with a new vision. But after the first year of Keatts, how many commits came in from high school after January? Genuinely curious

You make a great point about recruits being on the fence because of a new coach. I mean look at the 5 decommits last year, one in Cuthbertson who openly stated he was on board with McGrath and then 2 weeks later flipped to Coastal Carolina. Yeah, he's averaging 18 ppg there, and would probably be our best player.

As to my original statement, I was just simply making the argument that talent is still out there. You are 100 percent correct that recruiting is about the relationships made over years of following these kids on the Prep/AAU circuits, and I recall Keatts having his classes pretty much set about a year before they were set to enroll. (other than Talley)

Unfortunately, McGrath's relationships with kids as of now would be guys he previously recruited to UNC. Which isn't going to help us. I Think that's why his first call when he got this job was to Doug Esleck, who made a name for himself on the recruiting trails at Mercer. Estime and Jaylen Simms were kids he had targeted while at Mercer. Then Jentel Cylla, our transfer from FAU is from the same hometown as Jackie Manuel and looked up to him to an extent. So I think those relationships are there and I think they've done well recruiting. Yes, Kalina makes C.J. Gettys seem like Pat Ewing, but he would't be here if Salah didn't leave the program in June. Ultimately, I don't expect much of a talent drop off with the new staff. They just need time to get guys in.

Question for B and B:

Sports media using "UNC-W / UNC-Wil" or any other variation but UNCW. Why does the athletic department allow this? Why doesn't someone make a call to ESPN, CBS, or anyone else that is going to show a game or run our scores on the bottom ticker to correct the name?

Recruiting is about establishing relationships and having a chance to play early. I think that this staff will do well recruiting regardless of this year. They already have 2 good ones and only need a couple more bigs and/or another good guard.

Thanks for bringing up the name situation CG. It's about time to get it right once and for all.

No problem, it's something that frustrates all of us and should be rectified.

Also, I think you make a good point about recruits wanting a chance to play early. Coach McGrath has done one thing to help himself out there. He's given Gary significant minutes and Estime isn't far behind. So if recruits are paying attention, they should see that if they put in the work and effort it will be rewarded straight from the start. That's a great thing.

Thanks, when do you record? I'm sure there will be a plethora of questions after the first conference game.

Can you talk about the scrum during the Delaware game. What led to everyone flipping out and having to be separated
