RE: Nashville is getting an MLS franchise
I guess whether Cincinnati or Sacramento is next will tell us what is happening with Columbus - I can’t imagine Columbus staying with a team in Cincinnati.

So once Miami comes online - probably at the same time as Nashville:

West
Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, San Jose, LA Galaxy, LAFC, Sacramento
Colorado, Utah, Houston, Dallas, Kansas City, Minnesota

East
Chicago, Nashville, Atlanta, Orlando, Miami, Toronto, Columbus
Montréal, New England, New York FC, New York Red Bulls, DC United, Philadelphia

If Columbus moves to San Antonio, I would expect Minnesota to move to the East, unless if Cincinnati is the next team instead of Sacramento.

Probably not the same time. Nashville will probably begin in MLS as soon as they can open a soccer-specific stadium, maybe 2019, or 2020 at the latest. MLS will have 23, an odd number of teams, playing in 2018; there were 22 in 2017 and LAFC is a 2018 expansion team.

So, 24 in the season Nashville starts in MLS, and 26 in some following season. It's still not a done deal that Beckham's group in Miami will get off the ground.

My bet is Cincinnati.

Sounds like the Crew has basically already made their decision to go to Austin. I would guess MLS would not want to lose out on the OH market given that reality.

MLS is so damn stupid. Huge soccer mad market in Phoenix, site lined up, but don't have a multi-billionaire owner to bribe MLS with.

MLS to Nashville

And they aren't out of the woods yet on the Fairgrounds site - there is not enough room on the site to build a stadium without demolishing buildings or the race track - both would violate the city charter.

It's between Cincinnati, Sacramento and Detroit. Detroit has a stadium issue, Sacramento needs a financial backer and Cincinnati's market is cited as a weakness. FC Cincinnati averaged ~22K a game in the USL last year, which would put them in the top 7 (likely would be increased with a MLS schedule vs. USL).

Meg Whitman withdrew as a Sacromento Republic owner, which is a huge blow to them.

Cincy probably wins the second slot now, but there is more news coming on the stadium plan. Second team won't be announced until January.

A second team needs to start playing earlier to balance the new LA team. Miami would join in 2020 with Nashville. Detroit cou,d be the backup team if a Cincinnati stadium doesn't get finalized. But Cincy will play at Nippert for at least a few years.

At this point, can we be certain that Miami will join at all?

It shouldn't have taken this long for them to get their house in order. It's a good market and Beckham brings star power, but something has to be fundamentally wrong with the plan because we don't have news of any real progress.

What's wrong is that Beckham's group wants to build in downtown Miami where their presumed fan base wants the stadium to be, and not out in the 'burbs like where the Dolphins stadium is. But land's expensive, people living near the desired sites don't want a soccer stadium there, etc., etc.

A lot of newer MLS owners resent the fact that Beckham got a long-ago deal, in 2007, to buy an MLS franchise for $25 million. (Whomever made that deal for MLS made a huge mistake in not putting an expiration date on Beckham's opportunity to buy in for that low fee.) Nashville and other new franchises will pay a $150 million expansion fee. So, if Team Beckham eventually gives up and another city and ownership gets an MLS franchise instead, the league makes an extra $125 million.
