RE: Easy OOC
Whats the Lol? Pretty obvious the program is not improving with Carey.

I think we'd all feel better with kill, novak, or Doeren going into a tough ooc.

RE: Easy OOC
Who do you think our recruits are excited about playing against? The Presbyterian’s and Tennessee State’s? Or Nebraska and Florida States? We’ve shown the ability to compete with some of the Big Dogs in better conferences. I’m sorry but I rather trend for almost beating Ohio State than trending because we lost to Western Illinois. We’re attracting better players because of our tough out of conference scheduling. Boise State didn’t become Boise State because they were afraid of competition. Neither did TCU who are in the Big 12 now. No Cupcakes please..... Give our fans something to be excited about.

How was basketball equivalent Butler built? The biggest conference jump (Horizon to Big East) in college sports this century?

Through OOC scheduling. Did you know the second year Butler played in the National Title game - they started 5-5 in the Horizon? No one remembers that. Everyone remembers that Butler beat 4 P5’s in Nov/Dec before doing it all over again in March.

I don’t remember that.

Does anyone else remember 4 P5’s victories in Nov/Dec? Who remembers Butlers out of conference schedule from several years back?

I don’t think you should say “everyone”.

Oh geez. Turning this into an anti-Carey post sounds familiar. Is MD back as Frank?

RE: Easy OOC
Every season is different. Most years the big OOC games are great for the fans, school exposure and department finances. At the same time the losses aren't too relevant to the teams overall success. But there are years when everything can come together and you want the "right" OOC schedule when your team peaks. I.E. WMU 2016, NIU 2013. That access bowl spot will probably take a 13-0 record that includes one solid p5 win. Maybe 12-1 with a good loss to a top 10 p5. But those years are very few and contingent on a having great QB. For now enjoy the big match ups. It's a great test to see how competitive the team is. You'll get a win here and there, usually when that p5 is down or vs just one of the lower p5 programs, and those are still special and fun to celebrate. You just can't expect NIU to dominate the MAC and play at a top 25 level every year. I don't expect them to be at that level in 2018, but I could see it in 2019. Evaluate with your eyes, not your heart.

That's was my guess as frank just signed up Dec 1st, but I believe MD was banned a few days after that?

Hopefully it will be taken care of by the moderators, if it gets out of hand again.

I've read for a while, just not a social media guy. I actually waited for weeks to get a login or Id be on here sooner. Sorry not into your board drama.

I can't be the only guy that thinks Carey is serviceable at best? I like the idea of stability with a coach that no p5 will want but Id rather roll the dice with stepping stone types.

i think you were actually wise to avoid the board drama!

As far as Carey goes, he seems to be growing as a coach, which is good. The young assistants have definitely helped and most recruits over the last couple of years have commented on the family feel of the team now. I can't argue with the recruiting this year as the class looks fabulous. I still question in game decisions and hope that also improves.

I think there are going to be some major decisions associated with football over the next 5 years as well. The P5 are doing everything to shut out the G5 schools and the NCAA is doing nothing to stop it. I expect a lot of schools to fall down to lower divisions. I strongly believe NIU is going to have to do something to position themselves or face the same consequence.

Quote:While you claim "3-1 wouldn't surprise me," what are you really expecting?
Because pre-season magazines won't be afraid to predict the Huskies going 0-4, 1-3 at best.

I'm expecting 2-2. Beat BYU and Utah. If preseason magazines were right NIU would never win the MAC west. I have a lot of respect for Steele's thoroughness but he picked the Huskies to win the division one time in the run of 6 straight I believe.

Doeren's OOC results:

2011
Army* Huskie Stadium • DeKalb, IL ESPN3 W 49–26
at Kansas* Memorial Stadium • Lawrence, KS FCS L 42–45
vs. No. 8 Wisconsin* Soldier Field • Chicago, IL ESPN3 L 7–49
Cal Poly* Huskie Stadium • DeKalb, IL W 47–30
2012
vs. Iowa* Soldier Field • Chicago, IL ESPNU L 17–18
Tennessee–Martin* Huskie Stadium • DeKalb, IL ESPN3 W 35–7
at Army* Michie Stadium • West Point, NY CBSSN W 41–40
Kansas* Huskie Stadium • DeKalb, IL ESPN3 W 30–23

And those were really bad Kansas teams. Doeren had the team ready to play going into the second month but his OOC record was worse than Carey's, by quite a bit.

+100000
I’m jacked about that Utah home game next year. A legit PAC10 opponent who is consistently ranked. Playing in DeKalb?? I’m bringing a large group to this one. If they were playing Presbyterian I wouldn’t give a sh*t.
I’ll say it again and quote Ric Flair
“To be the man, you gotta beat the man!”

If you beat these types of teams especially FSU, people will take notice. Nobody cared about Boise State winning the WAC all the time, but they sure did take notice when they beat teams like Oklahoma.

Looks like a lot of wins and double digit win seasons. Probably bigger crowds then, than we will get next year. Part of the fan base gets excited by wins, not opponent. Hopefully people show up for the Utah game.

UCF did. 2 fcs teams and two beatable p5s I believe. Again not saying all cupcakes but we need a schedule that we can manage. Get couple breaks and we can be back in access bowl discussion. Worked for us in the past, ucf this year and fleck last year.

Swallow the pride and look at big picture. Who gives a **** about getting a p5 at home. Our students don't show up anyway. Let's be honest.

I think this year's schedule just ended up tougher than originally planned due to the offer of a boatload of money to play FSU. And we need the money.

Can't compare UCF to NIU. The AAC had 2 other ranked in addition to UCF. The conference alone puts them up higher than if NIU beat their out of conf schedule and the MAC

Better comp is western mich last year or us those back to back orange bowl era years.

But I agree AAC is far superior than MAC. Hence why we have to build and maybe get in their if musical chairs of expansion happens.

Absolutely more wins! I loved going undefeated in the MAC! But I thought we were talking about OOC.

Just my opinion but the crowds have fallen because game day atmosphere has fallen because of so many weeknight games. I don't think crowds were better in 2012 due to the big win over Kansas.

Yes we are. He posted many wins on there. Then running table in MAC makes it a phenomenal year.

Yeah probably a factor but I know fans like me can be shallow.. it's more exciting to go see a 4-0 team on their way to a awesome season. Knowing that we can stay relevant in media discussion by being unbeaten and a consideration for access bowl.

Once we lose a couple next year early it's disappointing.
