RE: The Championship Building Plan Thread
Just saw that.

BTW, the new video board, as part of the building, is part of Phase I. That is good news.

It might be worth noting that this is part of a larger approval of building projects:

"The athletics component was just one of three major facility improvements approved by the Regents at their December meeting in the areas of academics, student life and athletics. A total investment of $76 million was authorized with $40 million set for the renovation and expansion of Sill Hall and $16 million for an upgrade to the Rec/IM facility."

So doing the math I get: 40M Sill Hall, 20M CBP, and 16M Rec/IM = 76M.

As best I can tell EMU is doing a pretty good job on capital spending for buildings. Some how they are getting building renovated which needed to be renovated.

BTW, I'm still perplexed by the project.

The new building needs to extend further south than the existing football building, which means the track needs to be moved. I assume moving the track is part of phase I (along with a new soccer field, I believe.).

Dear EagleTough,
I guess you don't need my address at this time. HA-HA. Personally, I just had confidence in the university community to move forward on the project. Very good news indeed.

RE: The Championship Building Plan Thread
BTW, I think we REALLY need to realize that this is Phase I of what I presume is a TWO phase project. What do I mean.

Looking at the drawings, the new building (phase I) is the building at the northwest corner of Rynearson (as indicated in the press release).

http://emuchampionshipbuilding.com/

By volume, the BIGGEST part of the project is the building which will be a new indoor practice facility with the new indoor track (replacing Bowen). That presumably is phase II and quite expensive too.

I assume part of Phase I is moving the OUTDOOR track and the soccer fields.

Where is this going and what is an unresolved question? The video board is integrated into new IPF, which is Phase II. So my question is how does one do the video board if the structure to which it is to be attached won't be built until $ becomes available? Will it be 'free standing' until the new IPF is built. (BTW, the 'old' IPF will be rented out).

Looking at the concept video, it appears that the new building will be much closer to the north end zone (where the Rynearson track is now). I can't tell if the playing field will be moved southward say 10 - 20 yards. Once again, I'm looking at the video to make these statements.

My hope that as Phase I is completed that folks will step up with fundraising, etc. so that the remaining funds can be obtained to complete the ENTIRE project....

I'm now wondering IF the old football building, etc. stands until AFTER the new building is complete and work begins on Phase II?

The Championship Building Plan Thread
Steve I wonder if this was planned so that some of the main attractions to football fans, new scoreboard, no track, will be on display next year and thus be a live cry for more donations to finish the whole project. Essentially put a little carrot in from of us all.

My thoughts EXACTLY!!

That said, it was very smart the way they were able to take a big project and divide it into two parts, Phase I and II.

Two parts works because Phase I needs to be completed, I think, before the existing football building can be demolished so that Phase II can begin and, of course, we don't have the money yet for Phase II.

One other thought:

Most of us here are football or basketball (or both) fans with a few who follow track and field, etc.

Phase II, the IPF, will be GREAT for indoor track and field. What T&F athlete wouldn't want to compete in it?

There will also be big improvements for wrestling, gymnastics, even baseball, softball, and golf get new hitting cages.

BTW, I have reason to believe (smile) that my hunches are correct.

Phase I, as indicated in the press release, is the new building plus standalone scoreboard. Nothing more.

Phase II, everything else such as moving the track, building the new IPF, new soccer field, demolishing the existing football building.

Yup that is what I have heard they have been telling coaches and recruits dating back to last year. Pretty awesome!

Kind of 'worst to first' thing for us. Spending money on a good video board is well spent. The aesthetics of it should be impressive.

RE: The Championship Building Plan Thread
Dear Friends,
After talking with someone from the development side, well over ten million has been raised privately, the brick campaign is over the $25,000 mark.
Bidding on the construction has been pushed back to February (this month), so it may not be until spring when actual construction begins. As things stand now, the video board is supposed to be one of the first things built.
Monies brought in from suite seating are going directly to the project, and the private donations effort is going to go into a second phase. It sounds like people are working very hard to push this project to completion.

Indeed. I was told that the video board is 'stand alone' so it is not dependent on completion of Phase II.

To us FOOTBALL fans (I'm excluding discussion relevant to Olympic sports, there are four key components:

1). The video board (Phase I)

2). The football building in the NW corner of Rynearson (Phase I)

3). Removal of the existing football building, (Not sure when this will be done. Could be after completion of the new FB building Phase I OR when Phase II begins)

4). Completion of the new IPF (Phase II)

?). Remove track from Rynearson. (Phase I or II? Dependent on when the new track is completed).

#1 and #2 can occur at the same time.

#3 is a prerequisite of #4.

In regards to the brick campaign I have been told from administration that they are close to passing the 250 brick mark on their way to the ultimate goal of 1,000. Also it is believed that a wave of donors will come when the construction timeline becomes firm and there are actual deadlines. This information is expected to become available later this spring/summer.

RE: The Championship Building Plan Thread
For those who do not know how these fund raising projects go:

The first phase is the 'silent phase.' These are usually big donors known in advance to the project. These are usually six or seven digit gifts although some five digit gifts are part of it.

The second phase is the public phase where they go for volume, say hundreds of gifts of say 5K (that equals a million or two) as well of gifts of other sizes.
