I talked to Ray at NMSU ticket office today & he said they have gone over 6000, but what's 300 tickets between friends. Super nice guy. Seemed like they are pleasantly busy with the bowl game. Great time to be an Aggie.

Nope. Was doing some informal polling of other ticket offices after GCU seemed to know nothing about WAC tournament ticketing, even though the conference started pushing communication that they are now available through the schools. Turns out that it seems WAC jumped the gun, as nobody seems ready to sell at this point.

Once again the WAC is out of touch with its membership.

Should wait for conference play before they try to sell tickets.

For what it's worth, I did get a call back from the guy at UTRGV today and they are ready to rock and roll. I was actually pretty impressed, as I didn't tell him my info or specifically ask for a return call, yet had a missed call and message saying "You were right about tickets coming available and we are set up to sell them now." No extra fees or anything.

I was so impressed by the attention to detail and level of service that I called him back and bought my tourlament tickets through the UTRGV box office this afternoon. Job well done, Vs!

NMSU has sold 6,100 tickets so far through last night, not including tickets bought directly through the Arizona Bowl, and the 1,000 tickets that NMSU put aside for players and coaches families.

That's impressive. I'll be cheering for the Aggies even though football is not a sport I care too much about.

I saw on Twitter that Utah State has only sold like 700 of their tickets. Going to be a NMSU home game in Tucson

Definitely, 6,300 have bought tickets through the NMSU ticket office. That doesn't include the 1000 tickets they put aside for students, coaches, and staff members families, and the 1000+ who bought tickets through the Arizona Bowl. We are expecting about 10,000 Aggie fans.

RE: Need a NMSU football thread on this board!
Since this is a football thread I will bring up Liberty's 2020 and 2021 schedule as it impacts NMSU. The Flames announced their full schedules for those years and NMSU is not on schedule. NMSU has Liberty twice (home and road) in both 2018 and 2019. So that is two additional games to fill. (2019 is looking like only 5 home games, and two may be FCS schools, as they have only 9 scheduled, only 3 home games, 1 an FCS - I project one home and one road with G5 schools but they would still need one more home game, which like Libery's schedules will probably be a 2nd FCS)

NMSU isn't going to schedule 2FCS teams. There are lots of options for the other game. The AD is working on the schedule. Emphasis on competitive money games and G5 opponents, especially west of the Mississippi River.

RE: Need a NMSU football thread on this board!
NotANewbie,

It's "possible" NMSU can get 3 G5 home games in 2019. But those return games will really start to pile up.

NMSU open dates in 2019: 9/28, 10/12, 10/26, 11/2, 11/23

There are still 7 G5 schools with open road dates for 2019 who can come to Las Cruces. 6 of those have 9/28 open. Only Fresno State and Texas State (10/12 or 10/26) west of the Mississippi. Akron, Kent, App State, Army, and FIU are the others. FIU is the other school besides Texas State that could have a post-September visit. This almost forces an FCS game, unless NMSU wants to face a 4th P5 school in a revenue game (alternatively BYU might do a 2 for 1 with the Las Cruces game in 2021, and Provo games in 2019 and 2020)

This is the fundamental problem, and it doesn't go away after 2019. There are very few schools willing to take a road OOC game after September. 2020 onward will be even more difficult without Liberty holding two of those final 7 weeks games.

Whatever Moccia's scheduling efforts, he faces a huge problem without a bankroll like Liberty has to buy his way into games. The other problem, those return road games are starting to pile up in the out years. This is not sustainable for more than maybe 3-4 years.

Take Texas State off the list for 2019. We need a home game and we are coming to NMSU in 2020. In fact, Texas State and Louisiana Lafayette are coming to Las Cruces in October of 2020.

Akron and App State need non-conference road games in 2019. They are two good candidates. Army, UMASS and BYU could also help if needed. They will find a way to get to five home games.

In 2019, NMSU will collect $3.8 million from three money games. The money alone is hard to walk away from. That money helps the whole athletic department, including the basketball program.

RE: Need a NMSU football thread on this board!
You are right on Texas State, I meant North Texas (corrected post). Couldn't even read my own notes. 03-drunk

Best case scenario they could get a home game on 9/28 against one of the schools I listed on 9/28 and one other, and maybe a road game later in the season against say

Akron should not be on the list. They play only revenue road games for OOC and a FCS home to meet the 5 home game minimum; NMSU cannot afford to buy opponents - further they need that September date to get an in-kind opponent.

App State, North Texas and FIU can play later than 9/28 so I'd try for those. If they can't get one of them, then that 5th game has to be a FCS.

Note, Coastal Carolina, BYU, and UMass can host NMSU later than September (only available dates). Only Coastal is probably able to return to Las Cruces in 2020, the other you are looking at 2021 or later, and BYU you are looking at a 2 for 1.

SoCal,

Yes NMSU is getting $3.8M, but this is offset by the dramatic drop of over $1.5M in SBC Football revenue from Playoff share. They drop down to the $350K or so of Independents.

RE: Need a NMSU football thread on this board!
Stu, I am not sure that NMSU got the full $1.5 million, but either way, the $3.8 million + $300,000 as an independent will more than offset any loss. NMSU got $2.1 million from money games this season plus the SBC playoff share, whatever that turns out to be.

The school already did a study and determined they would lose $1.4 million per year from dropping down to FCS. It may work out as an independent or they may find an FBS conference home. But I think they will stay FBS as long as they can.

RE: Need a NMSU football thread on this board!
The sustainability is playing for nothing and going 3-9 or 2-10 with 3 revenue games. And with only 5 home games, at least 1 and sometimes 2 against FCS. Your fan base erodes.

The big problem is when you play 3 revenue games is you cannot completely fill the rest of the schedule with home and homes. You have to get an extra home game in there, and that means stacking up an extra return game.

Push this ahead five years and you have five extra road games before talking about revenue games. This already hit a bit in 2019 for NMSU making 2018 work. They have 6 road and 3 home games - 1 is FCS and 1 is built in UTEP/UMN.

2020 has a good base of 3 G5 home games (Texas State and ULL returns), but 2021 is in trouble with 3 G5 road game, and there is an extra road game sitting there already in preliminary out years 2022, 2023 and 2024. These will catch up to them. You either have to drop a revenue game or play 2 FCS schools

**************

Forgot to mention, the problem is compounded after September. Even BYU has trouble filling their schedule after September. Their fans complain about playing nothing but junk opponents in Provo the lats two months.

Terrific win! A wild celebration! It looked like they had won a national championship game! Good season, NMSU ends up with a winning record at 7-6.
