Idea for 15-team SEC
Let’s say for whatever reason the SEC is able to expand with West Virginia (such as a Pac 12-Big 12 consolidation) but no viable 16th member emerges. Missouri moves to the West. In order to deal with the unbalanced schedule caused by two divisions, several East members are allowed to count their ACC rivals as a conference game.

This is what the SEC East would see for 3 of their 9 conference games:

Florida - LSU, SEC West, Florida State
Georgia - Auburn, SEC West, Georgia Tech
Kentucky - Mississippi State, SEC West, Louisville
South Carolina - SEC West, SEC West, Clemson
Tennessee - Alabama, SEC West, SEC West
Vanderbilt - Ole Miss, SEC West, SEC West
West Virginia - SEC West, SEC West, Pittsburgh

Arkansas, Missouri, and Texas A&M would no longer have a permanent cross-division rival, but would effectively rotate South Carolina and West Virginia between them.

Each of the eight West Division teams would play two games against the SEC East and seven games against their SEC West rivals. Tennessee and Vanderbilt have no ACC rival, so their ninth conference game comes from the two leftover SEC West teams.

The drawbacks to this are that this configuration pretty much works only with 15 teams, an 8:7 split, and five non-conference rivalries. Everyone but Tennessee and Vanderbilt would need 14 years to cycle through the opposite Division home and away.

The benefits include everyone in the SEC having nine P5 opponents, maintaining the SEC-ACC rivalries, and not having to split the pie a 16th way. Tennessee and Vanderbilt would see Arkansas more frequently (10 times in 21 years), which helps build a rivalry between the neighboring states.

Need 16. I need to keep the Mizzou-Arky game.04-cheers

RE: Idea for 15-team SEC
This is needlessly complicated. Either go divisionless or have three divisions of five.

RE: Idea for 15-team SEC
I like the idea of 15. I don't care if they go divisionless or 3 divisions of 5. I like divisionless better because without breaking up rivalries and forcing non-division annual games or creating incredibly unbalanced divisions, 3 divisions of 5 seems impossible.

I'll take this idea way too far...

PAC
North: Washington, Washington St, Oregon, Oregon St, Utah
West: Arizona, California, Stanford, USC, UCLA
South: Arizona St, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech

SEC
West: Oklahoma St, Texas A&M, LSU, Arkansas, Missouri
South: Mississippi, Mississippi St, Alabama, Auburn, Vanderbilt
East: Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina

B1G
West: Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin
Central: Illinois, Northwestern, Indiana, Purdue, Michigan St
East: Michigan, Ohio St, Penn St, Maryland, Rutgers

ACC
North: Notre Dame, Boston College, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech
East: Virginia, North Carolina, North Carolina St, Duke, Wake Forest
South: Louisville, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Florida St, Miami

---

AAC (becomes 5th "power" conference after large expansion)
West: San Diego St, Fresno St, UNLV, Boise St, BYU, Wyoming, Colorado St, Air Force, New Mexico
Central: Iowa St, Kansas St, Tulsa, SMU, TCU, Baylor, Houston, Tulane, Navy
East: Central Florida, South Florida, East Carolina, Memphis, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Temple, Connecticut, Army

The academies play their other 8 division games and each other for 10 conference games. They can schedule other conference opponents as OOC games if they choose. Having each in a different division allows for the Army-Navy game to continue as-is.

Not exactly fair that Florida and SC have to play FSU/Clemson while other East schools get much easier matchups. I realize GT and Pitt have storied traditions but we would clearly be at the disadvantage.

Why not go to a 9 game schedule and go divisionless. 4 permanent opponents and rotate 5 others each year.

There’s worse than WVU. Plus they might help us land Virginia Tech some day.

Anyway, if we go to only 15, it has to be a major school we normally couldn’t get, like say North Carolina getting kicked out of the ACC.

Fifteen teams playing nine games against each other is a mathematical impossibility regardless of how many divisions there are - introducing the ACC fixed rivals into the equation help overcomes that.

I understand the concept, I just don't think this is a workable set up in any way. You can't require two schools to play perennial top ten teams OOC and count those as conference games when no other school has to do the same.

Stay at 14 or go to 16.
