Why is NOLA the promise land?
NOLA appears to be the bowl game that is awarded to the best team in the conference, with some additional consideration to proximity and travel.

My question is why doesn't the conference shift its attention to the Cure Bowl? This game has the highest payout and it's matched against an AAC team.

Payouts mean nothing since it’s all split between all the conference members, even the ones who arnt in bowls.

And it’s the AACs last place team, usually a 6-6 AAC or they don’t have enough and we get a WKU

I'm guessing it has more to do with AAC than SunBelt. It'd pit our best team against a middle of the road AAC team. The AAC has other bowl tie-ins that perceptively trump the SunBelt.

I understand that. So why not send our best teams to go get the biggest payout? Our largest payout potential rests in the hands of GSU. No offense.

RE: Why is NOLA the promise land?
Payouts are a scam.

First bowls often charge a "marketing fee" to the member conferences. You pay them to promote the league and the teams and not just during the bowl season (you often see tweets from the bowl about key conference games for example).

The excess marketing fee above what they need to cover their costs is returned in payout.
So you may pay a $500,000 marketing fee and then get $400,000 of that returned in the form of payout.
Ohh that $400,000 cash looks good until you realize that after the first of the year you are taking that $400,000 and adding $100,000 to it to send back to the bowl.

Second, payouts are often in tickets.

Cure Bowl sideline seats are $50.
The bowl may pay you $500,000 but it comes in the form of 10,000 sideline seats. You don't "buy" tickets from the bowl any more. Instead they pay you in tickets. So if you only sell 1,000 of that allotment you ended up with $50,000 cash money and $450,000 in tickets you can't find anyone to take if you gave them away.

NOLA has the lowest announced payout and NOLA is consistently the Sun Belt's most profitable game followed by Mobile even though NOLA has a smaller payout.

The difference is NOLA pays you very little in tickets (like 3500) so if you sell more than that, cha-ching, most of the excess tickets are profit not shown on the official payout. They aren't charging the Sun Belt a marketing fee that gets turned into part of it coming back as payout.

NOLA and Dome game. Orlando is a destination but I rather got to NOLA. Bourbon Street I am going to party and eat good. I don’t care about Disney World and Universal studios when I am there for a bowl. IMO Nola Bowl is the Best bowl. Does the pay out go by how many tickets you sell?

RE: Why is NOLA the promise land?
I like the DG Bowl actually. Primetime slot on the mother ship and you're the only game on that night. There's the chance for a lot of exposure. Also the town does a really nice job of making the game a big event.

The Cure Bowl is a good matchup potential, but is on CBS Sports Network which no one really gets so it doesn't get you the boost from being seen on TV like other bowls. It's also a shared timeslot. On top of that, since it's the only bowl CBS Sports gets, they sell a TON of ads and make it last like 6 hours. I didn't think the stAte game last year was ever going to end.

Allll of this.

People are very misled by the payout information. Dan Wetzel's "Death to the BCS" book spent a lot of time talking about this (some info is outdated now due to the BCS being gone, but the things above like arkstfan goes over is still very valid).

That's the reason you want teams becoming bowl eligible that will travel well and buy a lot of tickets. It's also EXTREMELY important that people buy tickets through their school and not the dirt cheap ones from StubHub.

Best stadium and arguably best city for a bowl trip. I'd love a trip to the NOLA bowl one day.

I get all the politics and unadvertised fees of bowl games, but we should always be sending our best to the highest paying.

Troy to the Cure, $1,350,000
App or Ark St to the Dollar Gen, $750,000
App or Ark St to the NOLA, $500,000
GSU to the Camilla, $200,000
NMSU to the Arizona, TBD

This seems like the best way to get paid, and we could all use as much cash as we can get.

Tucson is on CBS as well

A-State vs UCF lasted 3:59 but yeah it felt like six hours.
Arkansas State and UCF combined for 36 incomplete passes. Each stopped the clock.
Add another 26 clock stoppages for penalties.

There were 23 punts and three turnovers on downs. So that's 26 changes of possession plus another 8 changes of possession on scores.

So you had an above average number of clock stoppages for incomplete passes and penalties. 25 first downs which is bit under average I believe.

Then toss in an abnormal 34 changes of possession. There were 16 three and out possessions.

Guys everyone shares the "revenue".

We're pretty lucky with our bowls, other than the date of DG for those that aren't in driving distance they're in good locations for the majority of conference members. We could be the MAC.

I would like to allow the champion to select their bowl destination now that we'll have a CCG next year.

I wouldn't be concerned about the Nola Bowl so much if their behavior didn't usually remove my team from one of 3 ESPN bowls that we have access to.

None of us are playing FBS football to 'make money'. None of us do. None of us likely ever will. Its about exposure.

Exactly. The MAC and CUSA have bowls spread everywhere. At least all the SBC bowls are easy trips (minus Arizona).

So why send GSU out for the biggest pay day? Don't we want to give our entire conference the best shot at getting paid?

It's like giving the ball to a back up on the last drive of the game. We should be sending the best team to the highest payout.

You aren't paying attention.

THEY ARE NOT GOING TO GET THE BIGGEST PAY DAY.

And we don't share all the revenue, only 50% of the ticket sales and any cash paid from the bowl goes to the league office.

That means if App fans get pouty and don't buy enough tickets to Mobile to cover their estimated expenses, part of the sales from A-State and Troy will be used to subsidize App.

If you think payout announced figures are real, you may also think the sticker price is the selling price of a car.

MWC ditched the Liberty for Las Vegas even though the announced payout in Las Vegas was $500,000 less. They did it because with the payouts in tickets and the marketing fee paid to Liberty they made less money going to Memphis than going to Las Vegas.

A few years back, Las Vegas wanted to cut the fee the schools paid and reduce the payout. The Pac-12 balked because they didn't want the PR of being in a bowl that paid less than a million. THE DOLLARS ACTUALLY PAID FROM THE BOWL WOULD NOT CHANGE. They just wanted the scam of pretending they were making more than a million.

The payout is the same whoever participates. My thought is there are two primary criteria for bowl placements. The first would have your best team in a game with the highest profile opponent so you have the best chance of winning that game since that benefits the conference on a national scale. The second would be putting the teams in bowls with the best chance of maximizing ticket sales and attendance as that minimizes the cost to the conference. Keep in mind for the most part only one of two games actually have a positive bottom line for the school and conference. Maybe shoot for break even costs or close to that. Just throwing something out there.

It’s not the best paying one if you can’t get fans to Orlando if they would rather go to NOLA.
