Looking forward, who could we get to take us to the next level?
And besides last game where the whole team quit I have loved watching the defense this season. I hope we get a great offensive mind and the next guy retains Coach Wommack so we can really compete on both sides of the ball.
Welcome to the board; nice first post!
I agree with your post. Joey Jones, despite any frustration USA fans may have had with him, should always be admired and respected as the guy who built this program. USA students and the USA Board of Directors gave us football, Joey built the program. He had nothing at USA to work with when he came except a cell phone and a dream. But he believed in USA and his hometown Mobile that USA football could be a reality. Now we have an FBS team, a very nice football field house, an eventual practice facility (if it doesn’t fall down again during construction
), a win over a top 20 team, a win over an SEC team, two bowl appearances in 4 years (was bowl eligible in 2013), wins over every team in this conference that we’ve played (except Georgia Southern; we’ve never played Coastal), and set us up to be able to grow. I’ll always admire and respect the great time and effort he spent to make this program a reality.
With that said, he hadn’t cut it in conference and I think him coaching in the last year of his contract is starting to make more sense. He will coach the final game of the season against NMSU, which he deserves to do. There may or may not be an announcement before then. If there is, and to get USA on the radar with coaches there should be, it won’t be to say he is fired. Retirement or no contract extension is the worst it will be. We respect Joey’s dedication and work put into our program too much to do that.
This statement isn’t inside information but a scenario I would love: Joey announces he is stepping down and semi-retiring and becomes something like a Director over Football Operations or something. That keeps him as part of our program and we aren’t completely severing ties. It might also bridge the gap with our next coach.
