I'm really concerned about NMSU. They have an offense. They will be playing on Senior Day and on their last day in the conference and probably for a bowl bid of their own.

I'm more concerned with Ga Southern. All they have to do is whisper "triple option" in our defense's ear and they will fold like a fan.

And Georgia Southern hasn't been hopeless at home this year. They led Georgia State 17-7 until the end of the 3rd, led NMSU into the 4th, and held a lead on Arkansas State until almost halftime.

Its on the road, its their last home game of the year, and they're searching for something to give their fans some hope. And yea, we've never beaten them nor have we beaten anyone with that type of offense.

Its a trap game to be sure. I think USA wins, but only puts it away in the 4th.

But if we're talking about Jones keeping his job, the game vs Georgia Southern isn't really part of the discussion....its assumed to be a win.

If he wins out and goes 7-6 (assuming we get to a bowl, because we still might not) then I think he still retires and goes out a winner. I think last season and this season has taken a major toll on him. Also, we as fans are not going to be happy going just 7-6.

Anything short of winning out he's relieved of his position. If he were to win out and win a bowl, I think he retires with the "I've accomplished everything short of winning a conference title I've set out to do". And he can move into some sort of administrative/tour guide for donors roll with the program. He can set out to raise the money for our OCS and get his name on something pretty. Which I'm all ok with.

GO JAGS!!! Go get our coach these last 3 wins.

Oh I agree. I don't want him back as head coach next year, even if he does win out. But if he got a 2 year extension after going 7-6, I wouldn't be furious.

I really want to keep our defensive coordinator though.

To be honest, I just want someone that is young, competent, and has no tie to Alabama or Auburn.

What needs to happen is the announcement that Jones won't be coach next year. That is to give whoever replaces him as much time as is currently possible for recruiting.
That is assuming that the university wants football to advance.

If they haven't started looking today, they should start tomorrow.

I'm not so sure about the DC after yesterday.

If you lose to an 0-9 team 52-0 and took a reasonably healthy team into the game (meaning the whole team didn't die in a fiery crash) you have to fire your coach.

RE: FIRE JOEY JONES#
Actually, I don't see how Jones gets an extension. The only question is who can we get?

The good news is that USA actually returns a LOT next year, which is a nice thing for a new coach coming in to work with. The defense, yesterday not withstanding, is actually pretty good and returns everyone. We have two usually capable QBs and a decent OL returning. Special teams are pretty good and returning too.

What are we missing.

1) Consistency
2) A running game

----

Last year, Georgia State ended up hiring a coach who fixed their glaring problem (special teams) and has performed pretty well. Lets see if our AD can come up with someone to right the ship. He should have a warm seat too. Just look at USA's basketball over the last couple of years.

I'm pretty sure South Alabama holds a record for the most dropped passes in a game series. Seems every year we play you guys, you have like 20+ drops.

We have a major problem with dropped passes the past few seasons against all teams. I think the problem has gotten worse after we transitioned to fbs. The worst spot to throw the ball to the numbers or right to the hands, but they can make the ones where they stretch out and grab it.

In fairness, we were hitting HARD on Saturday. Some of those were balls that were caught and got knocked loose or we knocked them out. Also, the QB was paying for a lot of the throws he made and was getting harassed the entire time.

Vildor straight up mugged a WR in the endzone for that INT he got.

A lot of the stuff that was straight dropped was underneath throws. We were doing a great job of covering receivers downfield.

It now seems inevitable that Coach Jones will retire at the end of the season. He has built this program from nothing and, as other posters have mentioned, should be celebrated.

Looking forward, who could we get to take us to the next level?

And besides last game where the whole team quit I have loved watching the defense this season. I hope we get a great offensive mind and the next guy retains Coach Wommack so we can really compete on both sides of the ball.

It is 1:25pm on the Monday after losing 52-0 to an 0-9 team and Joey Jones is still our head coach. Is there another school in America this is possible?

We can "assume" what is going to happen all we want but why has no one in the admin come out today and addressed the fan base. Letting a coach get within 4 months to the end of the contract and now leaving the fans to debate on a message board is unacceptable.

Welcome to the board; nice first post!

I agree with your post. Joey Jones, despite any frustration USA fans may have had with him, should always be admired and respected as the guy who built this program. USA students and the USA Board of Directors gave us football, Joey built the program. He had nothing at USA to work with when he came except a cell phone and a dream. But he believed in USA and his hometown Mobile that USA football could be a reality. Now we have an FBS team, a very nice football field house, an eventual practice facility (if it doesn’t fall down again during construction03-drunk), a win over a top 20 team, a win over an SEC team, two bowl appearances in 4 years (was bowl eligible in 2013), wins over every team in this conference that we’ve played (except Georgia Southern; we’ve never played Coastal), and set us up to be able to grow. I’ll always admire and respect the great time and effort he spent to make this program a reality.

With that said, he hadn’t cut it in conference and I think him coaching in the last year of his contract is starting to make more sense. He will coach the final game of the season against NMSU, which he deserves to do. There may or may not be an announcement before then. If there is, and to get USA on the radar with coaches there should be, it won’t be to say he is fired. Retirement or no contract extension is the worst it will be. We respect Joey’s dedication and work put into our program too much to do that.

This statement isn’t inside information but a scenario I would love: Joey announces he is stepping down and semi-retiring and becomes something like a Director over Football Operations or something. That keeps him as part of our program and we aren’t completely severing ties. It might also bridge the gap with our next coach.
